[PLEASE READ] “I just hope for the best, expect the worst, and take what comes!” quoth blithe teen actress Anne Shirley in character as “Melissa Smith,” a naïve, spirited young girl with aspirations, in M’LISS (1936). Troubled by small-town gossip, Jenny finds both her reputation and romance imperiled. Will good results prevail? Watch the movie!
This film projects a benevolent sense of life--and Americana-the likes of which will not return to motion pictures for a long, long time. There are also happy emphases on the importance of personal integrity and the value of friendship.
I think Anne Shirley was the most gifted young actress of the 1930s. Her inspired pairing with the most accomplished screen actress of the 1930s-Barbara Stanwyck-is ideal in STELLA DALLAS (1937). Moreover, had Miss Shirley been older at the time actresses were being tested for the role of “Scarlett O’Hara” in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939), I think she would have been a superior choice to Vivien Leigh.
Fans of author L.M. Montgomery who appreciate Anne Shirley’s namesake-leading-role performance in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1934) will recognize and welcome the resurrection of the heroine’s delightful personality here.
Screenplay adapted from a Bret Harte story by Dorothy Yost, who contributed to a number of scripts for Astaire/Rogers films.
Bemusing quote from a provincial barber: “Women don’t need to be educated. Soon as they get a little book learnin’ they start stirrin’ up trouble!”
