What I truly love about Taue is how it seems like it’s forgotten how big he is compared to the other pillars. In his matches against Kawada and Misawa in the 95 carnival he reminds them he’s the giant amongst the pillars. Great video as always, Joseph!

Taue was my least favorite when i first got into AJPW in the 90s . But the more i watched the more i liked him ! He wasnt as flashy but he played his role like none other ! The little things he did were awesome ! Then he bust out giant moves like the Nodawa otoshi !
@pipmitm8276

I'm disappointed that Kawada's first reign didn't end in some epic confrontation with Misawa. But I am intrigued by how each time the pillars' relative strength shifts, it seems to entirely change their dynamic. When Taue gets more vicious and dangerous after developing some new tricks, Kawada loses a little of his luster but "Dangerous K" is still lethal enough to injure Misawa and change the course of the tournament. And as Kobashi slowly approaches Misawa's level, we can see the others handle him differently. You make the story of these four wrestlers feel as important, nuanced, and even artistic as I imagine the Japanese fans felt it was back in the day. Thank you for producing such great work!

@MrKennyWilliams

@@JosephMontecilloYT Yeah...Unfortunately Kawada's Title Reigns either suffered from 1. Having to drop the belt to the Big Foreign heel (Vader, Hansen) 2. Injuries (He didn't even get a CHANCE to celebrate his 99 Win as it was vacated due shredding his forearm ulna.) 3. After the remaining Pillars went to Noah. Because of this almost EVERY Kawada Championship reign is just....eh...

I absolutely loved this episode I loved the (somewhat) bigger focus on Jun Akiyama And of course Taue, he's so underrated and his match against Misawa in the AJPW 1995 Champion Carnival Finals really shows how AMAZING Taue really was. .......Stan Hansen pinning Kawada 30 seconds after hitting his signature Western Lariatooooooooo gave me HHH Vs Booker T (WM 19) Flashbacks (I didn't like either of them to be honest) Extremely excited for the next one because June 1995, has the best tag match ever 😉 (In my opinion haha) Thanks!

It kills me today when wrestlers TRY to go "Strong Style " or " Kings Road style " but miss the point completely of WHY it worked so well then . Trading stiff chops and forearms does NOT make it either of the latter styles i mentioned . It seems they are missing the details behind what made it great in the first place . YOU understand this concept more than most people wrestling today on TV !

Excess. I watched kings road for the first time with 6/3/94 in about 2017. And, while I thought it was a great match I originally didn’t pursue other kings road from that match, because of that word. Excess. I thought even that match was dragged out at times and was concerned it would be a theme throughout. I did not even attempt to get into 90s AJPW until this series. And while I have a whole new appreciation for the style, I do think excess perfectly explains it’s biggest issue.

I’ve seen this video a few times now and I just wanted to give my thoughts on the first match your discussed, Kobashi Vs Kawada. I think it’s much better than you give it credit for (not that you’re extensively hating but you know what I mean), they definitely needed to build Kobashi up as a credible contender for the triple crown. Around this time, anytime Kobashi was going to challenge the triple crown champion, he was definitely seen as the job guy and nobody ever expected him to win the match. I believe they were trying to slowly rid him of that stigma with this match. I understand where you’re coming from with your points, it definitely comes across as being harmful to Kawada’s first reign.

Your videos help to put a different perspective on AJPW’s golden era. Instead of parroting the praises of King’s Road like most of the IWC do, it’s great that you can identify the flaws of the matches post 1994, as AJPW’s take on southern-style wrestling became increasingly bloated and its psychology centred around how many dangerous neck drops one can take.

Nobody knows whether the broadway was the original plan or not, but 1/19/95 always felt to me like a self-conscious attempt to give Osaka a Great Match after the Great Hanshin Earthquake. Baba deciding to go through with the show was a big, big deal, and Kobashi commented that he wanted to wrestle a match that Osaka natives would be proud happened there. It's also worth noting that it was puro's first hour-long draw since 8/8/88.

It would've been better to have Kawada drop the belt to Misawa in July, rather than a throwaway bout with Hansen in only his second defense. After a strong showing at the CC, then the tag win in June. He would've had so much momentum going into the July match. And at the very least, give his first title reign some meaning.
