Really need to put new clearcoat on a headlight after restoring them like that. Headlights come with a UV protection layer, but when polishing/restoring them like this it completely removes it, so those lights will cloud up again over a much shorter period now than they lasted before. When doing them like this they'll sometimes last only a year or two before clouding again.

Thanks as ever Graeme. There were certainly some dirty gloves in that video, axle grease is evil stuff but brake cleaner does help. 50k is looking sooner than expected so best get planning, a drive to Wolfsburg would be good and it would be too easy in the Mk7 so might have to be this car. Will feel less nervous about that when I've stuck some miles on it and for that it needs an MOT so all to play for :)

The important bit about hitting the inner part of the CV joint when removing is that you are hitting the piece of metal that's held by the circlip directly. By hitting the outer edge, each ahmmer blow is going through the bearing balls/cages. Probably doesn't do any harm and likelt 99% of garages would do the same, but it feels nicer to me to be directly hitting the centre. It's the sort of thing that makes cars last 300k+ miles rather than 150k!

Autosol metal polish works a treat on those headlights. It's not actually the polycarbonate that fogs up, but the UV resisitant coating. Once you polish them up you should apply some UV resistant coating so it lasts, or you'll be doing it again in 6 months.

If you release the main 19mm ball joint nut and shock it off with a few hammers, then you don't affect the aligment lie you do if you undo the bottom 3 nuts. it's a bit fiddly but you can use the outer circumference of the outer CV joint to pop the taper off.

@wirelessgeek1 had a similar problem on my Audi A4 b8 2008 2.0 TDI. Fault scanned with vagcom and vag Otis sp? no fault codes, car randomly not starting not starter motor, not crank position sensor or cam position sensor .. had various mechanics look at the problem,.and was about to scrap the car at 200,000 miles... Problem was ECU harness after some amazing fault finding by an independent vag mastertech. Problem was intermittent/random. I would check crank position sensor and check to see if fuel is getting to engine bay - fuel pump/fuel filter?

Been looking at MK5 GTi's this week, and the best most well maintained one has been one with the AXX engine code, any reasons that i would not go for an AXX over lesser maintained BWA's....or should i just wait for a well maintained BWA, down here in South Africa, enjoying the content!
@volkswizard
Жыл бұрын
Hey Ashley, I don't think there is much of a difference. AXX has an awkward cambelt cover but that's only an issue at cambelt changes. I'm sure there are detail changes with the newer engine but often these are emissions related which makes the car more complex and less reliable so no, go for a good AXX and you will be fine.

Hey there Nermin! It’s tricky as could be the map, cat, lambda sensor. Check for fault codes, if none I’d swap to stock map and try then rather than swap out parts on a trial and error basis. If cars aren’t driven hard then that can reduce cat efficiency but I’m guessing with that map, you don’t hang around 😁

Excellent post as always! I recommend you replace that air box with a cold air air intake, the air box will eventually break and, because it’s mounted right over the engine, will only send really hot air into the engine. I saw a difference on my MK5, pre tuned, because of the aforementioned reason, a few extra horses, but also not piping as much hot air into the motor. On cooler days, the difference is very notable, at least for me.

It just shows slow and steady doing a job is a must. Great video once again 👍 I have never found a bolt seized on mine when I first started taking bits off. Ever since I've always greased accordingly for the future. Also a must is changing the cam follower in the hpfp. Bit of flaff but worthwhile if you don't know the history, age when it was last changed. In my ownership of 110,000+ miles I've changed mine 4 times. Each one looked the same with the coating removed but no visible indent. Oh OEM CV boots is a must, that's one thing I've learnt in the past with mid range aftermarket ones. Oh, as for the alarm siren, it's a very common fault and they just give up. Can't remember the reasons but they short circuit and burn out. But over all tho, good job so far 👍

Thanks ! It’s funny because I’m sure I replaced the alarm on my old edition 30. It has back up batteries that leak and corrode the circuit board. That car used to false alarm and it was an ultrasonic sensor in the roof which needed headliner out-siren is definitely the easier job
