I first came to watch this video to see how fast the masters moved. I was looking for any thing just to see how fast they would be. I was a bit annoyed by the lack of movement. Now that I'm watching it from a kendo perspective, this video is amazing. Each side is trying to read the others next move and wating for the smallest opportunity to strike. Truly spectacular.
His spirit could not be moved. He was calm and could not be pushed back nor did he uselessly move. The very first moment he pushed forward, he cut. That kind of certainty alone is amazing.

the most amazing fight I've ever seen, I love to see in any martial art when the fighters just look at each other and you can already tell who wins as if subconsciously they had already agreed who's the winner. one of them had imposed his will over the other and the other didn't even realize it.

It is like with real swords. One hit and you're dead. During their long(very long) wait they tried to read their opponent. Read their minds. If you make a move, the opponent will probably find a way to counter it. They had to find a move that had perfect speed and timing cause they were putting their entire life behind that one move.

@wakerofwind88 I'd agree that, practically, you want an absolutely clean hit since you may die as the defeated opponent "completes" his move. But watching the slow motion carefully, you'll see Mochida (left) hit men a split second faster, and then the right brought his sword up to the throat. In kendo, that split-second difference is all it takes, so this was a good hit. As a kendoist, I have my own feelings on the matter, but it's normal in kendo. It's also hard to see details on this old film.

That was the most perfect example of 平常心 (heijōshin) I've ever seen!

Ah yes, old people Kendo. It looks still and boring; then you fight someone who has been practicing for 35+ years, and they kick your butt. It never ceases to surprise me.
@genobourn7423

For so many that are talking so negative about Kendo, in the day of the samurai so many of you ( if you lived back in that day) would rush to your deaths. You state it looks boring, when you have the sharpest weapon in the world that ever existed..Really?..Remember ..you don't have to "swing" it like a large English or Viking sword, the katana blade is razor sharp. One mistake and...that's your life. I am pretty good in the game of chess. ( Usually "blow" pass the average player.) But to counter an equal or superior opponent, the game speed slow down instantly and carefully. Kendo, like chess is mental first in priority. Note: I am a "older man" now, I was in the work force for a very long time. And trust me, the mental jobs were much more "taxing" than the physical ones. After completing your job that was more mentally challenged it takes your entire being to adjust (relax) and calm down.

@wakerofwind88 And how did you judge that hit?It was a perfect hit in the men.And this is Kendo,you run into your opponent's shinai all the time,the only thing matters is how you keep your vital parts away from it.And they didn't just stand still,they was constantly testing each other's mind.It was not only just a sword fight but also a test for durability and concentration,you get distracted for one moment at ít's over for you.

I loled at the guy in the comments who has the nerve to criticize a 10 dan... he obviously has never done kendo before in his life... (at least, at the time he wrote this.) 'I train swordfighting myself.' Funny. I don't think he understands just how fast those people really are. Btw... awesome vid!

@Fullmember100 It will come back eventually. We just have to train ourselves until some reaches a level that 8 dan is no longer applicable and must become a 9 dan and the same for 10 dan. This will take a long time though and many will still feel as though the rank isn't real...

@wakerofwind88 I don't know about european styles but this is an utter victory to the left, the thing is he doesn't use a fast strike either, he completely traps the man on the right with his timing, and seizes and opening. A philosophy behind kendo, there are some other martial arts that share this same philosophy btw, is that You give your arm to cut his neck. also there are actually a lot of people lurking on youtube that are trained with sword fighting, a lot of posers as well too thou.. :|

umm... i'm pretty sure he was center when he hit the men... these guys were masters of control, they literally fought with their minds until the precise moment they could strike. imagine having center, and time freezing at that exact moment, that's pretty much when they strike
one guy hit the men, but did the other guy's judan hit the attacker's tsuki? it's hard to tell. although he can't get the point for tsuki because there is no footwork, but usually if this happens judges may not give the men point if the opponent occupies the center.

you know I'd love to say that was beautiful, but what did I really just watch? I watched 2 guys fiddling with practice swords for about 3 minutes all to be decided with 1 strike in a split second. This is the problem when 2 masters fight, each one knows how skilled the other is and takes account for every possible scenario.
@jayhawktd6240

You do understand that a master of this skill can just kill you if you make a wrong move and even if they are wooden sticks they should still be treated as live swords when being used and practiced with because if you were to mess around and not take it seriously why should i trust you with a real sword.

now it is hard to see, but doesn't he get thrust in the throat just after hitting his opponent on the head? quite possibly valid in the rules or something, but surely a master would go a step better than that and not get hit at all? i can't understand how that is a masterfull execution, even if the man might be a master... we are all human...
@GavO808

The throat pointing after the strike would be considered useless for it was a clear "cut". In kendo a cut or ippon is death (the kote is considered a sparing of life) making anything after the cut non existent.
