I got myself an electromatic pro jet with bigsby because I just loved the sound that came out of it, but being a strat man I just couldn't get used to how the bigsby sat,so I modded it so now I can hold the trem arm in my hand. I took the arm off, filed the stop off, took the shim out and very gently bent the arm down. Its amazing the playability off it now

Yes! Stability! This is why if I were to install another Bigsby style trem, I would actually use a (much cheaper) Teisco style trem which already threads the strings in this more sensible way 😊👍

I am going to incorporate this idea to my bigsby as well...however, it looks like the string do bend more as they wrap around the post... do you break strings often? I also like the idea that you are using existing brass saddles... do they intonate well? Did you have to file slots for the strings? Speaking of strings, what gauge do you use? Awesome mods, I want to try them out on a partscaster that I am presently working with a Luthier.

I love Bigsbys and it's the only vibrato I use. It can be really hard to string. I have one on a Gretch 30 inch scale bass VI/baritone and the biggest problem is getting long enough strings to fit. I end up having to buy 2 sets of different brands to get a suitable gauge set. I don't have an issue with using the pins, I kind of like that they are still made the traditional way. It is a great mod though .

How would the strings not come out of the holes? I’m thinking of doing this with my bigsby before I put it on my tele

Intonation was pretty standard for a tele w/ uncompensated saddles. Not perfect, but I used D'Addario 11-49's w/ a wound 3rd to alleviate the biggest issue with this particular guitar. And I played it for more than a year w/ this setup on it and I broke 1 string on it. Total. With no string modifications. And yes - would recommend slotting the saddles a bit.

@jedzeppelin1000 Couldn't tell you. As it was a project guitar, I've never played it w/out the Bigsby on there. Bought the body, neck, pickups and electronics, Bigsby - hell, even the pickguard separately... and then pieced it all together.

Love it! Two questions: 1. How does the wilkinson compensated saddle work? If two strings are still on one saddle, how can you adjust them individually? 2. How did you decide how far to place the B5 from the bridge plate? Thank you and great video!
@crxshdxmmy
9 жыл бұрын
+Emmanuel Zapata Thanks! 1. You can't. These are actually the stock saddles and they're vintage style...so individual adjustments are not possible. 2. I just eyeballed it. Nothing overly scientific.

I see peeps bending the bolt that holds the saddle to compensate. IMO, theae bridges look cool and retro buttheres a reason they arent popular and its because you cant intonate the guitar properly. Go with a more modern bridge.

@cosmogang This guitar has sorta become my answer for what I wanted from the ASAT - but didn't want to pay for. I loved the MFD Jumbo in the neck, but wasn't exactly thrilled with the bridge MFD and wanted more of a typical single coil sound ... and I really wanted a tremolo-equipped guitar. This gives me both...and for less than half of what a new ASAT with those options would've cost me.

Have you had an issues w/ the strings breaking along the stop bar. By stringing it through the rod instead of around the post, this string breaks at a sharper angle. Has that been an issue?

A Bigsby b5 would also fit if its a tele , b5's are for flat top guitars like sg's and telecasters , and if you don't want to drill any holes into your guitar check out a Vibramate V5 TEV mount kit .A Bigsby b16 would also fit a tele , although you would have to shim the neck to install it and drill holes.

I know it's an old video, but thought I would ask anyway. Did you have to shim the neck after installing the Bigsby? I'm building a Strat/ Tele hybrid...Strat body and Tele neck and most likely Tele hardware. Haven't started it yet but wanted to get as much information as possible. I bought wood for the semi hollow body, a Tele neck, and my Bigsby (Chinese clone) just came in the mail today. Thanks for any help!👍😎🎸🎶

@crxshdxmmy
12 жыл бұрын
@telecasterbear No. And they could be a bit lower, but this is strung w/ 11's... so the higher action isn't all that noticeable - and as a plus, slide work (which I'm terrible at, but trying to figure out) is a bit easier too.

Bigsby = roller saddles. After that, reduce the break angle. First try taking the roller off and using only the shaft. Second try not even using the shaft. Third, make sheet metal roller end extensions to raise the shaft/roller above its original level or buy a system for about $65, hee-hee). With rollers, the less break angle - the better tuning stability. Finally use the lightest oil you can find everything.

nice vid. sometimes camera shake doesn't bother me, unfortunately this on is (seems like it has some kinda jello at same time maybe? Bigby string mount mod... interesting idea, nice work ! nice looking.. but not really better, in fact maybe original is a bit under-rated in it's maturity. ..pins are simple design, probably a bit easier to make but that's not really the point. but the smooth round bar is kind to strings...you always beng the ball end over correctly and then its prob at all. It looks like he have have shape a groove smooth in there to round off that break-point. Too bad you didn't show it to us with one more more stings not in it. If you were breaking strings all the time, yeah you need needlenose pliers to use pin design, but bending the end is no prob. In the I think both designs are good. But neither really better than other, so really no reason to change. Bigsby's are my fav vibrato by far. they are just awesome looking anyway and I think require the least added fuss. With a B7 on a Washburn HB335 it has always be super pitch stable...after breaking in new strings. Even no probs with non-roller bridge.

Check the date: this video is from 2011. I may have been the first (and only) person to ever get him to do it. Turned into a big pain in the ass, too, as I recall -- so that's probably got something to do with it. I think I had a B5, but he normally did the mod on B50s because the metal is softer and the drilling is easier. I think he actually had to get a replacement string shaft direct from Bigsby because mine didn't work. Anyway, if you want the same thing, they sell the modified part at Callaham for $40.

WRONG, you DON'T want your strings routed under that roller in front, you run them OVER the top of it if you expect it to stay right exactly in tune. As long as there's still enough of a slight downward angle on the strings to hold them onto the bridge saddles.
