This is the best bass machine in Euroland, imo. You get the deep, strong fundamental sine and then add the desired amount overtones through phase modulation. Use an envolope for percussive attacks (changing the modulation index). Never washes out or gets muddy in the very low register; always sits stable in the mix.

What reverb are you using? Sounds really good.

Hi Ben, great video, thanks! I am particularly taken by the LFO example, not so much the PDO itself but those 4 saw oscs sounding like brass - any chance of you remembering which ones you used here ?

what is the difference between phase distortion, phase modulation and phase displacement?

how essential is it? i am trying to get my head around it, can you not do similiar things by patching the pdo to itself?
@0Metatron

I've personally managed to get so many more sounds out of it since getting it but then I didn't have a vca before that. I think it's just very difficult to achieve a lot of things without one

phase input are bipolar? if so any vca would work.. right?
@Space_pulse

@@thisisprisma I would think so. I was planning to use my Befaco A*B+C to get similar results (assuming I decide to pull the trigger on one of these, still thinking about it). It’s only two bipolar VCAs, but it is a neat VCA with its own perks. That Triple Bipolar VCA looks generally very handy, though, especially considering the size. Hmm!

So do the oscillators have to be synced for phase distortion to work ? I guess yes ?

a pdo with expanders makes a complete voice. Just add something like a Voltage block and you can make a litetime of music.

that patch at the end could be an ambient track entirely on its own. Love it.

Awesome demo. Question: is this the same synthesis principal used by software "FM" synths like FM8 or Operator? I remember being schooled by SeamlessR that what we typically brand as "FM" in the software world is actually phase modulation.

Phase modulation synthesis and phase distortion synthesis are two different things
@woodlandcritterpunch

They are, but this is in fact phase modulation, not phase distortion. So yeah,
@woodlandcritterpunch

The thing about it that's different though is the focus on the oscillators being out of phase with each other rather than being able to run at different frequencies.

really like this module, but the price though justified is super steep for me... 449$
