Good story from yesteryear! I was probably a little older, 14 years old in 1962, plowing with a 1939 Farmall H with a little gypsy two bottom 14" plow turning over oats stubble which was the easiest to learn on. Dad always wanted to run the plow as deep as possible, no hydraulics so you had to keep an eye on the depth and adjust manually and then constantly moving the hillside hitch to keep the farrow turning over evenly, he didn't want to see any gaps there either. Good memories plus I got out of the evening milking!

Your right moldboard plowing is an art. That’s really cool that you guys still do it. Growing up we had I believe an eight bottom that we pulled with the Minneapolis Moline plainsman articulator I can still remember that like it was yesterday

I remember the first time dad let me drive, was to a NH square baler while he stacked on the wagon. I was only 5-6 and so small I couldn't push the big clutch pedal down on our 2-135 White. Dad would start it and jump off and to stop I just killed the engine by the key. Up until then, I was pretty much inside that tractor riding along anytime it was doing field work. I remember riding from dawn til dark, days plowing with dad every spring. Plowing has always been one of my top favs.

Cool to see you doing that Andy! I just plowed a field that hadn't been used in a few years a couple days ago. I used my 5055 and an old JD 3 bottom to do it. I was really surprised how well it worked. I even went through an old fence row I had just pulled some pretty big trees out of, and I went real slow, and it cut and pulled all the little roots right out! I disced it up and then went over it with a chain harrow to gather the chopped up roots. Going to plant some hay in it just to have it green and maybe bale next year.

Cheers Andy, That takes me back to 1978! A while ago!! I was 19 years old driving a 4020 with a 5 furrow knvernland semi mounted plough with hydraulic crossshaft, which I liked a lot. We did a lot of ploughing with this combination and with a lot of practice I became quite proficient. A most satisfying job to take pride in with experience. Thanks for this one 👍 Done, catch the next.

Great story Andy. I plowed 19 years with a 4450. Dad bought it new in 1983. Also traded in a 4440. I started plowing with a 4000 Deere in the 70’s. Dad always said a good plowing job makes it much easier to work down for planting. I am all No-till now, got tired of picking rocks.

I loved plowing. The sounds the smells. Everything was drowned out by the tractor noise. I wrote a lot of stories in my head while plowing. I learn to plow with a 350 International gas with a 4 bottom plow. Also use an old Farmall M using a three bottom plow. This brings back a lot of memories. 💜

As head mechanic of a large ranch/farm I really liked this. Our Oliver ( perkins diesel) and our Case 2670 and the Ford 9030 BD did all the hard work. Lots of ground to cover. I was the driver of the big JD airseeder ( wheat). Those JDs never miss a beat. Excellent!

When I was 10 years old, I moldboard plowed with a Farmall "M" gas tractor and a John Deere 3-14" bottom plow. When I was 11 years old the following year, we graduated up to an Oliver 1850 gas tractor with an Oliver 5-14" bottom plow. Sometimes I would get to run my Uncle's John Deere 4020 diesel tractor with a John Deere 5-16" bottom plow. Moldboard plowing was one of my favorite things to do. Just put the pedal to the metal, and let 'em roar.

Moldboard plowing was my favorite thing to do next to chopping corn when I worked on my uncles dairy farm. We plowed with 2 tractors our biggest tractor was a MF 285 that pulled 4 16’s and our next biggest tractor was a MF 175 it pulled 4 14’s both plows were masseys also. No cabs. We milked about 90 Holsteins in a 30 staunchin barn. Thanks Andy

I remember dad dualed up the 44 after I was done that spring to put on the press drill outfit. May 10th, he unhooked from the drill to get out of the gate at one field, by the time he got to the road the front wheels were standing still, pushing snow. Just thought I would share! Hah, my dad got our 4620 and 5-bottom plow out in the field today. First time that plow's been used in years, since we chisel plow most everything now. It was neat to see it done the old-fashioned way, though. At 1:31, it looks like the guy in the 4450 was having 'fun' trying to keep that tractor going forward and straight in the furrow. I'm glad that wasn't me.
