Yesterday, a very local resident near the nest heard mom and dad owl hooting back and forth sometime around 4am. After that and up until sunset, only mom owl was seen and heard hooting. No replies from him all day (at least any that were audible to human ears).
While many of the regular owl watchers here started to worry a bit about the dad owl late in the day (myself included), mom owl didn't seem to waver. She knows the assignment and takes every decision seriously.
About a week ago, a few days before the first owlet would be seen but while mom owl was still brooding it, dad owl had also been absent during most of the morning hours. In this clip, after previously calling for him, she appears to be weighing whether to stay in the nest and brood or if she might be able to quickly hunt any of the loud, potential prey targets in very close proximity. Which will she choose?!?
Additionally, seems like a dad Great Horned Owl spending a day away every so often isn't too uncommon - especially if he already filled the owlet larder for the day. Beyond that, even if one in the pair dies or disappears during this time with owlets, the good folks at The Cornell Lab Of Ornithology (@CornellBirdCams) always seem to have all the bird info we're looking for:
