The day after the slight, brief first appearance of the 3rd Great Horned Owl baby of the year, mom owl set out to feed them all. There was some pushing and even stealing food out of the mouth of another sibling. However, the youngest owlet needs to grow fast and catch up, so for this meal it ate the most and at one point even tried to bite off more than it could chew...even though owls don't really chew! Seemed like the newest member of the family was also being stubborn - trying to refuse mom's help in tearing the meat into smaller pieces. So in some ways they are similar to when human kids are stubborn with their parents! 😄
At the end of this feeding session, the wind started to pick up and the temperature dropped, so mom owl got the owlets under her to keep them warm - just as the wind blown branches began to obscure the camera's view of the nest.
Owl Names:
********
Given the calendar and changes to activity in the nest on certain dates, the working theory is that the 3rd owlet hatched sometime between March 26-27, which was a Tuesday and Wednesday. Wednesday was already taken by the Addams Family, so I agreed with the gathered owl watchers that we will call this little one Tuesday. 😁
Recap of the officially unofficial names:
Mom: Mathilda (or Tilda)
Dad: Ricardo (also Ricky sometimes)
Owlet #1: Clementine
Owlet #2: Petunia
Owlet #3: Tuesday
(Also, it seems like Clementine and Petunia are looking more and more alike each day. It won't be long before we can only say "an owlet" in the descriptions because by the end of April it will likely be too difficult to tell any of them apart.)
