In reviewing one of my videos from a few days ago, I saw that mom owl had used her third eyelid - more formally known as the "nictating membrane" - to keep her eyes lubricated on this windy day.
All birds have them, but for owls "The nictitating membrane is closest to the eyeball, underneath the bird’s normal eyelid. It helps keep the eye lubricated and closes to protect the eye when the owl is hunting." (www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/at...)
