VIDEO DETAILS
Monday 08 January 2024 and a Wildlife Guardian investigator along with several concerned locals travelled to Weacombe Barns to monitor a meet of the Quantock Staghounds.
They came up from the meet via Staple Plain car park with several hounds and passing a police 4X4 which was parked in this car park. Passing the police they headed on up to Bicknoller Post and after loading up hounds apart from four they then had to disappear quick with the approach of a police 4X4 so much so that even seasoned hunters were left behind. The problem of illegal driving on the moor was solved in minutes. A tractor was doing some work on the track and held up the police unintentionally. Later the hunt had reduced to two hounds.
There were walkers a plenty around and it wasn't until 12.44 that the sounds that a hunt makes was heard (mainly exited shouting) coming from Holford Combe area and a while later a loud bang was heard from the 'Dukes Plantation ' direction. As one of the hunt masters has recently taken up letting off crow scarers in woods this smoke screen does help them to muddy the waters regarding illegal shooting with shot guns which has been taking place around the hills strangely just when the stag hunt is out and they always disturb and get deer running right in the guns direction.
Quite a while later at around 14.00 there was a move back to 'Hare Knap' by the hunt and a period of hunting here. At 14.45 a very tired pregnant Hind with a last year’s calf came out on Dowsborough, who was just now keeping ahead of a hound which was out of control therefore did not satisfy any exemption of the hunting act that uses two hounds.
I once, many years ago watched the truly horrifying event when the hounds got hold of a hunted deer with no one anywhere near to get them off including myself and I felt very helpless. The distant screaming cries of the deer is hard to forget. Thankfully, the hind and calf on this day ran into a stag and the hounds got side tracked and so we hope the hounds lost it as not long after the hunt packed up.
A mention here too for the poor horses that had to contend with rock hard treacherous ground and ice-cold conditions.
