Aren't you supposed to leave your creativity at the door when playing religious music?

I think that is a misunderstanding. Gospel is full of creativity, the bass particularly, as it provides the motion to the harmonic foundation. I've seen Mono play gospel in church and secular music in a larger ensemble and he can definitely play more traditionally when called for. Keep in mind this isn't 3-chord Praise and Worship music where any deviation from simplicity is shunned. Also, this isn't a live show performance, so he's stretching out a bit to make the bass the feature but it's also very traditional in many ways to support the core of the music as well. Sometimes we sing with others, and sometimes we sing solo to give our praise to the Lord.

He came up in the church, he knows what he is doing! Look up his video of when he was 17 years old in church. I watch that video at least once a month.
