I first saw this movie as a kid in the tv section at a mall, many many years ago. I remember they used to have many TVs showing the same movie, and only one had the sound on, so every time my parents brought me to the mall, I'd just sit there and watch a movie. That time I saw this movie, it was exactly this scene. It scared the absolute fuck out of me, although I remembered the cgi looking much worse. For many years I wondered what the name of this movie was. I began searching for all space movies that I could think of. Then about a year ago I asked my dad "I need you to remember the name of a movie I saw at the tv store. It was set on mars and a dude got killed in a whirlwind". He looked up and immediately said "Mission to Mars, with Gary Sinise" as if he had been waiting 20 years for me to ask that question.

That is no ordinary vortex; that is a monster. And when I say "monster," I'm not giving it a silly adjective for its size. This is an actual, living, breathing, sentient, man-eating monster. You can actually hear a roar coming from the vortex. This actually gives me an idea for a new movie monster. Imagine something like that, but the interior of the vortex is covered with rotating rows of razor-sharp teeth from top to bottom.

I first saw Mission to Mars on DVD in 2001 (age 8). I didn't watch it again for 12 years because this scene scared the bejeezus out of me. Bear in mind, this movie was given a PG rating. Today, this entire sequence is unintentionally hilarious to me! The three astronauts not played by Don Cheadle think it's a great idea to just stand in front of a giant tornado that is honestly goddamn frightening. Also, watch the closeup of Nicholas when he's picked up; you can actually SEE the flesh being torn from his face by centripetal force right before his limbs and head are ripped from his body!!!

This scene is my example for absurdly unrealistic reactions of movie characters in extreme situations. I really despise this implausible behaviour by lazy script authors. As if the ludicrousness of this scene istn't plain enough, the following dialogue, right after the second shot of the forming vortex has been cut in this clipping: Luke (gazing at the flying rocks): "Oh my god!" (then saying absolutely calmly): "Got it taped, Sergej?" Sergej (pointing with the camera at the moving mountain, answers impassively): "Uh hum ..."
@ygstraightout2780

@robbit4butterfly

@@ygstraightout2780 But they weren't petrified, they were talking to each other, taping and didn't behave "petrified" or otherwise astonished at all! Look at some videos showing tornados on earth and even there ALL spectators are vividly gasping. Those astronauts must have been under the influence of a very strong tranquilizer. Wait, even then they would have fled from the scene sooner.
