Phil, thank's for the mention, both sides of my family were very involved in the areas of prostitution and Shebeening in the Monto. In 1896, five people from this area were charged with murder, one of which was my great grandmother and her older sister, a row broke out about the punter not paying enough and down he went, never to get up again. All of my photos that you have used were taken by my late uncle, Paddy Coffey, I have his entire collection of over 200 photos...

That's a great story. Have you any others from that time? The history of that area seems to have been whitewashed since independence. Would love to hear more about it.

For those who don't know the Monto was a massive 'red light district' in Dublin back in the pre-independance era roughly bordered by Talbot St, Amiens St, Gardiner St and Sean McDermott Street on the northside. It takes it's name from Montogomery Street (which is now Foley street) down by what is now Connolly station. Basically Luke is talking about picking up a brazzer and lamping her out of it

I remember hearing them sing this sometime in the 1960s and my mother fell round the place laughing half with embarrassment. When I asked why, she said it was about Montgomery Street where all the Dublin brothels used to be. After independence, it was shut down by the newly formed Legion of Mary who would gather under the window of a prostitute who had a client in and sing hymns and pray for their souls. Must've put the the men off their stroke, so to speak.
