Monty Python saved my life. I was a suicidal teen who felt that no one understood me. Then I discovered Monty Python. I'm still alive 40 years later. Thanks, Pythons.
@11matt11

I totally agree. I was way too serious a kid, and Python was the first time I really laughed to the point I couldn't stop. They helped me realize that I actually had a great sense of humor, and that it was OK to be funny like that. It was great to be totally silly and smart at the same time. Now I teach kids and they just love watching Python. Best TV program for kids ever, well, picking and choosing of course.

The US would have got it eventually. The guy introducing it stated that Davalier saved it from the the scrapheap.but this is just the standard US inability to see much beyond their borders. Python was already a very huge success that had been around for years. So it was already 'out there' and something that big would not have escaped notice for long.

Matthew Worswick - I agree. I’m American and if I heard Gilliam speak (without seeing him), I would assume he was an American too. I think he picked up a hint of a British accent from spending most of his life there. When Gilliam tries to do a real British accent, you can still hear his American accent. He’s a hilarious and gifted guy nonetheless.

Graham's sober performance in Life of Brian was really very good. The hardest job in the movie. Beloved by John most of all I am sure but the others are so kind and generous to him here. What an alignment of planets but also the existence of Python points to what an amazing comedy history the UK has, and also what a fertile time the 1950s and 60s were for breeding comic minds.

+drumstick74 Although Holy Grail was the first Python movie I saw and still to this day love it, I truly believe that Life of Brian is the superior film. Also I'm not honestly a big fan of Holy Grail's ending, I feel it's quite slow and not as funny as the rest.

Well, to his credit, he found this footage and saw it restored and brought to attention. We wouldn't have known it otherwise. Other tapes from the US have actually brought to light a sketch that was deleted from the master tape, the Political Choreographer (the British used to be very bad at saving their own television masterpieces). But when it comes to that the records may not be that rare (I have most of them).

Terry Gilliam IS American. He was raised in the midwest and lived there until almost 30 years old (28 to be exact). Why did he CHOOSE to speak in a somewhat "British" accent when interviewed? I never understood that. In later years, he'd drop that accent and just speak his native mid-western accent, but here in 1975, he seemed to have dropped it. He was a grown man when he moved to England (28 years old in 1968). One does not lose ones accent at that age. Especially after only a few years by the time of this interview.
@jasonflay8818
5 жыл бұрын
That's not quite accurate. The longer you live somewhere the more you tend to pick up the inflection. Take a look at Craig Ferguson, to our American ears he sounds like he has retained a strong Scottish accent, but he often comments when he goes home people think he sounds American. He moved to the States in his 30s. Even within a country the longer you stay the more of the accent you in advertantly pick up. My brother in his late 30s moved from central NY to western NC, he now has adopted some words and inflections that weren't there prior to moving.
