Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal (split mung beans)
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 green chili, chopped (optional)
1/2 inch ginger, chopped
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste
Oil for cooking
Instructions:
Rinse the moong dal in water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
Drain the dal and add it to a blender or food processor with the water, cumin seeds, green chili (if using), ginger, and turmeric powder. Grind to a smooth batter.
Add salt to taste and mix well. The batter should be thick but pourable. If it's too thick, add a little more water.
Heat a griddle or tawa over medium heat. Add a few drops of oil to the griddle.
Pour a ladleful of batter onto the hot griddle and spread it into a thin circle.
Cook the cheela for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Serve hot with your favorite chutney or dip.
