By far one of the most instructive video ive watch in a while on a hitchhiking / camping style. I personaly never did this kind of traveling but always wanted to so this did give me some great tip for my next trip in october! The backpack I am currently using is not made for lots of camping gear but I think I could figure out something using couchsurfing alot and avoid camping.

Hiking and camping are just synonyms for walking and sleeping. History, even in modern times, is full of examples of mind over matter (if you dont mind, it dont matter). For example, Granny Gatewood hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in Keds and a duffel bag.

I have no intention of disrespecting this man, but I want to say to anyone who wants to hitchhike it can be done with just the clothes on your back, I went from Denver to Seattle, down to San Francisco with nothing more than the clothes I had on. Being prepared is awesome, and Im not interested in debating anyone, but my advice for beginners, dont let logistics muddle up your trip, I believe hitchhiking should be about freedom after all, that being said comfortability is highly variable from one to another. Once again no disrespect, just offering possibly cheaper, argurably easier alternatives, any trolls in advance want to say I loce you and Im sorry I offended you

Very true, important for people not to get caught up in what they need bring. I offer my advice on what's been helpful and comfortable to bring along, but there is no concrete list, no two backpacks have the same contents and the backpack itself is not required, just the spirit to go.

How heavy is your backpack? I've thought about doing this kinda thing. I just trial fitted up my backpack with every thing I thought I would need. A tent, sleeping bag, 4 days clothing, 3 days food, some water, wet weather gear, pillow, cameras etc etc etc. Anyway its came in at 30lbs. Does this sound too heavy?
@HoboLifestyle

I've recently got my pack down below 15lbs, but over the years I've carried around 30lbs at times, occasionally much more. 30 is a good number to stay at or below.

I missed a few things so i'm actually up to 35lbs now. I'll just give it a 9 day trial run and try to think of what I can do with out during that time.

OutThereOutLook Ended up just going for 3 days. 550kms Day one out of 4 hitches. Camped and froze because I didn't have a good enough sleeping bag (i'll have to get a better one). Day 2 Hitched 50km one 1 ride Reached a city I wanted to check out spent the day there and booked a backpackers. Day 3 Decided to turn around because heavy rain was forecast for the next 4 days. Hitched 550kms with 6 rides and caught a bus metro bus 35 kms out going home... I never knew a metro bus went that far out of the city before. So glad some one at the truck stop told me and drove me 15kms to the bus stop. Even though it was short, I'm pretty happy met some interesting people.

How do you plan your trips? What precautions should I take? Anything I should be aware of? What are the down sides? Should I bring medicine? How abouts of water should I carry? What about clothes how do I wash them?
@HoboLifestyle
10 жыл бұрын
Many trips aren't planned, the ones that are planned are for as many reasons as there are trips, depends what's going on where. I don't bring medicine and take many precautions other than having gear I like, such as a sleeping bag, waterproofing (tent, dry bags) and have a water filter so I can be more free. Down sides depend on the person, hitching requires patience, sometimes sleeping requires exploring. Water amount depends on the area. I wash clothes when I couchsurf or stay with friends.

i understand. well thanks a lot for answering my questions. ill be starting in a few months and am planning to do this for some years since "working to live" doesn't make sense to me when everything else around me can live freely and was born freely(didn't sign a contract in blood for birth). Other than not being 21 just yet i will enjoy this lifestyle and i wish you the same and best of luck.

Great videos! But the thing with hobo living or hitchhiking is ALWAYS the social aspect. Meeting people. Conversations etc. For me personally, im a loner and i like to escape from people in general. Its funny that almost all of the people that I've seen trainhopping or hoboing are social beings. Maybe its my mental health issue thats affecting my social skills and needs. Just saying.

I liked most of the tips in your video but you are wrong about that cell phone. It is my opinion that any woman should be able to defend herself, moreso if she wishes to travel by hitching rides. I've met quite a few male hitchers and some of them wouldn't be able to take care of themselves like my partner can. We'll be hitching together, and that's what I recommend any girl to do - learn to fend for yourself and/or find a suitable hitching partner.

do you know anybody interested in hitching/freighthopping california to FL beginning of march? how much $ would you want to have for a trip like that?
@HoboLifestyle
10 жыл бұрын
No one comes to the mind, but I'm sure there's someone out there. The money thing depends on how long the trip is and your diet considerations, for starters. The quick and correct answer is that you'll make it with whatever you've got. If you're trying to get to FL as quick as you can, hitchhiking will take around a week on average, up to a couple weeks, or as quick as a few days if you get amazing non-stop through-the-night rides. Not sure on the train hopping. Going straight through also assumes you shouldn't need money for anything other than food or maybe a couple dollar public bus if you get stuck in the middle of a city. You could do it with $20, anything more would make it easy, anything less you'd have to be counting every penny more so and counting more on the generosity that comes with being on the road, hitchhikers rarely go hungry. Or just stock up on peanut butter and the rest of it before you go, a smart idea anyway. Have fun!
