That's your voltage regulator it's making that noise it activates when you turn the key.You have a wire not getting connection,or the switch on the bottom of the column is bad.Here is something to try turn the switch all the way like you are trying to start it,then move the shifter back and forth to see if the shifter linkage may be out of adjustment.

Your new starter needs a good ground and you never mentioned that on this video. You can use your jumper cable from the engine block to the negative for now to test.. No money needed. Worth the try, it worked for me. Don't worry about the clicking, its your solenoid working. Good luck.

that click sound is from the voltage regulator, which is what that black box is. that’s normal for that. the no crank may be a bad neutral safety switch. try moving the shifter while cranking the key. what you can do is bypass the neutral safety switch. if it’s anything like my dads mustang, on the side of the transmission where the shifter is, there should be a switch with some wires coming off of it that lead to a connector. unplug the connector, and connect a jumper to the solid red and red w/blue stripe wire. that should bypass it (wire colors may be different but the 2 thicker wires going to should be to the starter solenoid, so put a jumper between those)
@93jake81
3 жыл бұрын
the no crank could also be from that mess of wiring under the dash. try pulling the ignition switch out, then trace the wires and see where they go and see if any of them are broken. if that all checks out, try probing the different terminals of the key switch with either a test light or multi meter, and have the other end of the multi meter or test light properly grounded. with the key off, check which terminal has 12 volts. that’s power going in. remember that end. then, with the key in the run position, one of the terminals should have 12 volts. to confirm it’s the ignition terminal, keep the test light or multi meter on that terminal, and turn the key off, and if that terminal stops putting out 12 volts, then you know that’s the ignition. next, put the key in the crank or start position, and check what terminal gives you 12 volts, but leave out your terminal that is for your ignition and main power in. once you find your crank terminal, trace where that wire goes and see if there’s any breaks in it. hope it helps

That small box below your selenoid is your voltage regulator. It makes sure your alternator doesn't oversupply voltage to your system. It could be a couple of things that are keeping it from turning on its own. 1. could be your ignition switch, 2. On top of your starter maybe a starter selenoid and it may not be wired correctly. To test, they sell what is called a remote starter switch, and all that it is is two-wire that connects to the starter solenoid and has a button on it that you bush. It bypasses all of your old wirings so you can then test your starter and, distributer, and get it running just to test.

Other people have already said this but I think it is worth repeating. Get yourself a Chiltons repair manual. They have wiring diagrams at the back, that will help you to find out what those loose wires are. And help you to find out if your ignition switch, neutral safety switches, starter and solenoid are all wired properly. Not too mention, they also have a trouble shooting section and how to sections throughout the book, which should be incredibly helpful to you. Good luck. And don't pay any attention to the naysayers. We all had to start somewhere.

I agree the sounds are from the voltage regulator box you pointed out which I believe are normal. With wiring like that, especially on cars that sat outside in the field for so long it's super common for wildlife to chew up wires so the ignition switchs usually don't work till you redo the wiring. Most of the time we have to rig up out own push button switch for the sake of getting the engine started till we can move on to issues like replacing all the old crappy wiring. If you can find a good manual with wiring diagrams idk if they have one available for that year but if you can find one it'll save you a lot of headache
@davebrittain9216

That box by the solenoid is a voltage regulator and it is sounding normal. There is a possibility that there are issues under the dash with the bit of a mess that you can see there. I would check the NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH. The neutral safety switch keeps you from starting it in gear. It will be attached to the shifter. Did you unplug any wires from the shifter when you took out the carpet? If so hook them back up. Move the shifter back and forth as your try to crank it to see if it is just a simple issue of it being off adjustment. If not follow the circuit. Don't be sorry to ask. Not asking is dumb! Hey, I actually have a 1973 Ford Mustang convertible with the same 351C engine. For me, when I turn the car over the clicking sound you first hear is usually followed by the starter trying to turn the engine over. Since you have the clicking noise, the wiring from the key to the engine bay should be fine. I would say you may have a bad starter or a dead ish battery. I know you replaced the starter, but even some replacements may not be perfect. Also the battery has to be charged up for the starter to turn the engine over. In my unprofessional opinion, the noise you hear when you turn the key off is probably the starter relaxing, going to the rest position after trying to turn over. I would try a new battery with a new starter and see what that does, and also check the wiring. The car should turn over without any sparks, fuel, air, etc. the fact that the key is not making the starter work means there is an electrical problem, so just trace the wires and check for anything that looks eaten or destroyed. Hopefully this helps, and good luck fixing it! These cars are amazing once they work!

For some reason it didn’t post my original comment. I’ve had starter solenoids that were brand new and bad man it happens. If you want to jump the solenoid turn the key on. Jump from battery post to the starter post. You can also see there is an S terminal on the solenoid. It’s the smaller one closer to the battery post. That’s your ignition wire running from the ignition switch. You can even jump it from the battery post to that and the engine should crank. If it does crank from that then you probably have a bad solenoid. If it doesn’t then possibly a wiring issue. The voltage regulator shouldn’t matter for just trying to crank the car. The voltage regulator is only meant for charging as the 1G alternators do not have internal regulators like the 2G and 3G in the more modern cars. Good luck brotha man keep going. This is the fun and annoying part of owning old cars.

First of all keep up the positive attitude, you will get this. I am no mechanic but I had a few Mustangs and I believe the box you are talking about under the starter solenoid is the voltage regulator for the charging system. I do not think it has anything to do with the starting of the vehicle. It sounds like either a bad ignition switch . If you have a test light connect it to the "I" wire on the starter solenoid and see if it lights up when you try to start it from the ignition switch. Or take your jumper cable system you were using and put it on the I post (it is the smaller post sticking out of the starter solenoid just next to the one you were using to crank it over yesterday).
@michaelyoho4848
3 жыл бұрын
If it cranks over when you place the jumper cable on the I post then it is either a bad ignition switch, a bad neutral safety switch (or in gear) or bad wiring. If it doesn't crank over when you do this then it is a bad, new but still bad solenoid.

@Fordman7575

Could be a few different things. Did you reinstall all the wires on the starter solenoid back where they were on the original one? Do you have power to the lights and other accessories? #1. could be your neutral safety switch. Try moving the shifter thru all the gears a few times ( in and out of park ) . Also shift it into neutral and turn the key to see if it will turn it over . If it turns over then it's the neutral safety switch. #2. Try swapping the two wires on the small post on the starter solenoid. The one post usually marked with a "S" is the start post. That's the wire that sends voltage to the solenoid when you turn the key to activate it. The other small post is the ignition ballast bypass sometimes marked with an "I" . The ignition system has a ballast resistor/wire so it supplies the coil less voltage while running to prolong the coil's life. That little post on the solenoid bypasses the ballast resistor/wire while trying to start the engine when it's cranking. This gives a full 12V to the coil helping it start quicker/easier. If you have those wires backwards then it won't activate the solenoid when you turn the key. It could also be a bad ignition switch or damaged wire between the switch and solenoid. That wire under the dash is just a ground wire. That's why it's got a jumper going to a metal part.
@fredgillick3071

Try to move the shifter to neutral and wiggle the shifter a little and turn key at the same time. Might be a bad neutral switch or out of adjustment
@James31050
3 жыл бұрын
First thought is the neutral safety switch or a worn shifter, very common problem. Easy to diagnose and fix. To check, hold the key in the "start" position and jiggle the shifter back and forth. It will typically make contact and you can start the car. If not, drop the shifter into neutral and try again. If it still won't crank, then you need to diagnose the starting system. Have a helper man the ignition key and put a test light on the front small lug (typically labeled "S") of the starter solenoid. When the key is turned to the start position, the light should illuminate. If not, then you need to diagnose the problem with the N/S switch. If the light does come on, check that you have a good battery, preferably a new on or a verified good one from another running vehicle. I recommend a remote starter switch, but you can use a screwdriver or pair of needle nose pliers for the next step. Jump the front large lug of the starter solenoid (battery +) to the front small lug. This should engage the solenoid with a solid "click" and spin the starter. If not, then rap the solenoid with the handle of screwdriver a couple times. If you still get no joy, replace the solenoid and try the process again. Once you get a solenoid to engage, then you can see if you have any other problems in the system.

The dusty black box is a voltage regulator. The starter may need to be changed out. Did you clean the block off to bare metal where you put the ground on it? Hit the starter with a hammer when you try to start it. Or hit then try to start it. It may need a new ignition switch. Try to short the solenoid across with a screw drive to see if it will turn over. There is a way to hot wire the ignition. I use to do it to my sixty seven when I lost the keys. you put a small wire from the ignition side of the coil to the hot side I think. Then short the two big post with a screw driver. I guess the the engine turns over with a breaker bar and a socket on the crank? Is there oil in the cylinders? Did you remove the spark plugs and oil it up? Its free right? turn it over with out plugs in it first. To make sure everything is cleared out. Take the valve covers off and hit the springs with a rubber hammer to break the valves free.

The black wire under the dash is a ground so I would say it is wiring check all of your grounds. Including the engine and body grounds. If you have a multimeter set it to continuity and if it has a sound setting you can check each ground to a known good ground and it should keep or scream at you if its grounded

My best advice would be to get a wiring diagram of the starting/ignition system. Looks like you got some wires that are messed up. I would also keep a fire extinguisher handy and make it easy to disconnect that battery. It starts smoking somewhere you need to be able to disconnect that battery quickly. I wouldn’t walk away from it with the battery connected either.

That's some Buba Jay wiring but don't lose hope, that is a dream car and anyone should strive to have that in their garage. The box you pointed at is the Voltage Regulator. I would replace it just out of habit, should be cheap. If you hadn't already replaced it I would say bad starter solenoid. As you replaced it probably not but I have seen them bad out of the box. After that, I would track the wires for neutral safety. Put the key into the start position and test for 12v at the coil. If I remember right you won't have voltage at the coil if it is in gear on that year. I maybe wrong I haven't touched a mustang in 30 years but need to check the neutral safety anyway.

Keep the videos, it’s how people learn. You might want to find some videos on youtube as well that are about how to start a car with these problems. There’s tons on getting old cars going. Keep asking questions. The ignition switch could be bad, but it did send some signal. Test it with the multimeter. Check all those weird wires, maybe plan to fix some of them as well. I don’t think power made it to the starter. Also, the more things you change at once the more possible problems you create. So try solving one issue at a time. Check each wire, if it’s bad fix just the one. Then start back. If you don’t have one, you might want to by a 12v probe to help check which parts are good or not as well. Lastly, if you want to check one item, like is the ignition switch working, just do a quick google search on how to check it. Then check, and move to checking the next thing, check the solenoid, voltage regulator, coil, etc. and defiant be checking all the grounds. One missing ground can make everything not work....

Also as people said before it could be the neutral safety switch. Which you should be able to see the connectors on the middle of the firewall. Should be two connectors one for the reverse lights and one for the neutral safety. Find which one is which and on the connector for the neutral safety you can unplug it jump a wire between the two. Essentially making it think it’s closed and if it cranks you know you’re issue.

I would say with the condition of some of those wires something is broken/wiggled free. you really need to use a multimeter and check voltage and lack of voltage throughout your wiring. there are lots of videos on what reading should happen on a healthy motor. again just thinking outloud. keep up the good work and dont get bogged down with perceived lack of progress or internet trolls. this is your baby and you are learning.

Best thing is find a schematic for the ignition wiring an clean that mess up under the dash going to the solenoid also pull the solenoid off clean behind it as it uses the body as a grounding point but yes you're correct the car will spin over without spark just not fire off an run once you sort the rats nest wiring an the previous above mentioned things you should see results it also wouldn't hurt to put some kind of detoxification spray on the ignition plug an clean it up to get as best of a connection as you can

the box under the solenoid is the old points-style voltage reg...it could be making the pinging noise, but it doesn't have anythign to do with starting. as crusty as it is, it prob will cause you charging problems tho. i'm still thinking its the starter solenoid clicking but not kicking the starter over. you can check with the mutimeter to see if its getting input when you key the ignition, and also if sending out voltage to the starter at the terminal for the starter cable. just set the meter at a place where you can see it from inside the car. obvs the starter is good since you were jumping it earlier. if you had anyone to help you, even the wife/gf, you could have them key it over and you feel the solenoid to see if that is the thing clicking.

You should get a set of shop manuals, study the section you are working with. Slinging mud on wall and hoping it sticks isn't troubleshooting. The circuit from switch to starter could care less about distributor, mystery box(voltage regulator), spark plugs, etc, etc. Should crank over even if mentioned parts were missing. Starter circuit consists of ign switch, neutral/park safety switch, solenoid, starter, battery/cables & starter/cable.

Now I know what I would be like if I tried to work on cars. Not being a critic I’m enjoying this.

Change the ignition switch, the box is the voltage regulator. Replace those wires from the regulator. Might as well change the regulator and alternator too, NPD (National Parts Depot) has everything you need. Also, order a wiring diagram while you are at it. All the poor wiring is holding you back.

its ok to ask for help...that noise is from your voltage regulator...nothing to worry about..now..it might be your neutral safety switch not working or out of adjustment...with your left hand..turn the starter switch all the way to the start posistion..and with your right hand..move the shifter around in park [ wobble it ] ...or keep your left hand on the starter switch and move the shifter slowly from park into neutral ..if it cranks then the neutral safety switch is bad or out of adjustment...the switch is located down on the tranny behind the shift linkage

Below the solenoid is the Ignition box in some cases they can go bad. To check your solenoid use the screw driver method with you key turned on. If it starts that way it’s a bad solenoid. I’m some cases just because there new doesn’t mean they are functional.

The clicking noise is either you solenoid or the voltage regulator , That wire under your dash that is black with the red wire attached to it is a ground wire, And should be attached to the body. . Now with the key in the run possession take a screw driver and touch the big terminal that hooks to the battery and the small terminal right next to it, This will crank the engine over,

Get you a test light that beeps from autozone very handy when working alone. Hook negative to negative on battery hook the probe to wire that goes to solidnoid marked S that wire should be hot when you turn the key forward to start position. If you get that test light you will hear it beep if its working correctly. If it doesn't beep I would check the other wire just to make sure they are not mixed up. FYI don't leave that battery hooked up when your not working it , I seen all those loose wires I would put black tape on all bare wires. Wires like that can burn that car to the ground. Plan on new ignition switch they don't cost much.

try to subdivide all the wiring into different systems, if you can get some wiring diagrams and start identifying and labeling, thats my advice

That "clung" noise once you take the key out is the electro-mechanical voltage regulator turning off, same as my diesel truck

Another test you can do to see if plug wires are arching out between each other (bad) Go in their at night, get as dark as you can, turn it over out by engine so you can see if you see sparks between plug wires anywhere. That means bad wires. Your coil you can check by pulling coil wire off and with a rubber handled plyers hold it almost connected to coil to see spark from wire to coil, leave a small gap, like almost plugged in, blue spark is strong, yellow weak..
