In this video we see various V/Line regional trains at Bacchus Marsh, filmed on a sunny winters morning during the morning peak in August 2017 between 7am & 8:30am. Located on the Ballarat Line around 50km west of Melbourne, Bacchus Marsh is a large commuter town on the Melbourne - Ballarat corridor with a population of around 24,000. It is the originating and terminus station for several trains on the line during the peaks. From our trackside vantage point on the hills outside of the station we see a variety of different trains as they power out of the station towards Melbourne.
This particular morning was significant as it was the last day of revenue service for V/Line's P Class locomotives. These locomotives were rebuilt from 1950's era T Class locomotives in the 1980's; given a new cab, prime mover and HEP. They mostly ran in a push-pull formation with 6 H-type carriages. On this morning P12 & P17 ran the last 7:02am service to Southern Cross, while P15 & 14 ran the last 8:03am service.
We also see bulldog nosed EMD locomotive A66 depart the station; believed at the time to be the last locomotive of its kind in the world operating revenue passenger services. It was withdrawn the following year but has since been retained by V/Line as an heritage locomotive; having recently been repainted in V/Line's original orange & gray 'Tangerine' livery.
We also see some Sprinter DMU's depart the yard, which are no longer rostered on the Ballarat Line, but will today substitute a Vlocity DMU on a shorter service on a rare basis if the need arises. We also see a number of Vlocity DMU's, the usual mainstay on the Ballarat Line.
Since filming this video Bacchus Marsh station has undergone a major upgrade; with a second platform having been built with a footbridge to help increase capacity on the line. The former yard at the station has been relocated to a new stabling yard at Maddingley.
