Honestly so refreshing to hear all the bits about how overwhelming your collections can be. When Jimmy said "My head hurts thinking about all the upgrades I need to do to my decks..." I audibly laughed! It can be exhausting trying to keep all my cards physically and mentally organized. I'll spend 3 hours cleaning up one day, decide to completely disassemble decks that were never going anywhere, finally sort and put away those boosters I got two weeks ago, only to completely undo it all within a half hour the next day. I'm relieved to hear that it happens to the best of us because sometimes I just feel stupid about it😅

As a new player, I highly reccommend using a collection tracker like the one on tcgplayer. And then, maybe use some kind of notepad for inventory/decklists so that you can track your collection. That way u can check ur collection and if you know you own one, then u can cechl ur decklists / loose cards and it may have a note saying "in box #1, under the bed" or something. When it comes to organizing, you really wanna start early.

It's a bit ironic considering something Jimmy and Josh both said during this exact episode. But I think you guys should give your audience enough credit to not do clickbait or misleading titles / thumbnails. Everyone coming into this video is expecting an hour and a half of Jimmy and Josh talking about underrated mechanics and Commander but instead we got a command zone host q&a special. I'm not unhappy with the result I'm actually more pleased we get a q&a rather than Jimmy and Josh telling us what they think is underrated in the format. @jacobdavis9424

I was recently new to commander and after my experience this is what I recommend: 1. Watch some KZitem videos to see different interactions and playstyles. 2. Buy a precon in the playstyle you like and play it for a couple of weeks at your local game store. Noting the meta and how other decks operate. 3. Take your time and Upgrade that precon (through purchasing singles) 2-3 cards at a time based on your play experience. With an emphasis on improving mana curve, draw, interaction, and synergy. (Maybe with KZitem help) 4. If you think you are going to spend money on new decks do it on strong specific cards (singles) maybe with a focus on 2-3 colors. Even buying a 30 dollar card for a specific deck has been worth it for me because 30 dollars equates to like 5 boosters that likely won't synergize with what I want to do. 5. Expand your strategies slowly 6. Find people to ask for advice. People who recognize you goals (maybe fun, maybe budget, maybe power) 7. Have fun!

Cleansing Wildfire is my favorite commander staple from recent history, un-obtrusive to play, absolutely fair to resolve on an opponent. Offers the potential for a simple "cycle" while potentially even helping a color screwed opponent (or yourself). Potentially has some value shenanigans for your own deck if playing indestructible lands. Geomancer's Gambit was also great, but I think the one mana difference going from 3 to 2 makes a really big difference in how many decks it's worth slotting it into. I'd still recommend Geomancer's Gambit if the deck is Voltron, or falls apart easily to certain often used utility lands in their meta.

I was going to say cycling at first, but I think flying doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should. Play a deck full of flyers and watch everyone scramble to find an answer that is most likely not a board full of flyers because they only have one or two that just incidentally made it into their deck.

On land destruction: my group has nixed mass land destruction because of what it does to the game, but I think everyone has a Strip Mine or Ghost Quarter or Wasteland in their deck. I consider it a prudent form of spot removal. On card clutter, here's what I did. I decided that I could dedicate X space to my MTG collection(in my case, a set of shelves in my games room). I have this requirement that my cards have to be in binders so that they're easy to sort through when I'm browsing/brewing. My shelves will hold twenty-five three-inch binders, which works out to around twelve thousand cards. Each colour gets two binders, each colour pairing gets one, and anything in three or more colours gets sorted kinda haphazardly into the other five(there's a system that I can not fully explaìn). The same space will accomodate twenty-five deck boxes, a handful of which are filled with tokens, counters, dice, etc. That is the space that my MTG collection is not allowed to exceed, so if it fills that space, I have to sell/trade, rather than follow the path of my brother, who probably has multiples of every card ever printed, but just has overflowing boxes that you can't find anything in, that spills out of his spare closet.

I appreciated the discussion surrounding a lethal attack and whether or not the defending player should try to whittle down the attacker for surviving players. I think this is a no-brainer to make those blocks, but have played with people who think the defending player was being spiteful by killing attacking creatures. I am listening to the Mistborn series right now (check out the Brandon Sanderson ep of Game Knights if you haven't seen it!) and it instantly reminded me of the siege of Luthadel. With only 1 opponent it is an easy decision to attack into their blockers, but as you add opponents, the risk of being caught off guard rises. A lot of the time this will simply deter the attack entirely, because who hasn't died off a crack-back thinking they were safe?

On the sealed vs singles section, I have a strategy for how I built up my collection. Basically I would get pre-cons and upgrade them BUT I wouldn't buy a $20 card no matter how good it was for the deck if it was niche. The niche cards would be the ones that are ~$2 or less but I would allow myself to go a bit higher on the staples. The overall budget for these upgrades would be $25-30. Even today, I still do this. If I make a new deck, I'm looking to not spend more then about $30. Since I have the main core cards now, that make be 2 cards instead of what was previously 15 cards for that budget. I may put together a $1k deck but in truth, it was multiple $25 deck upgrades making new decks in similar colors or themes until it cumulated into being able to make about anything and only needed to get 1 or 2 cards.

Great video! Also, though it's not the main topic, it's genuinely fascinating to hear what some consider bad etiquette and others not. The part with the "kingmaker" scenario really baffled me (around 25-30 ish), and it's a concept I dislike in general. I 100% agree with your point of view; if you're coming for me, it's only fair that I go after you. It also touches on one of the cornerstones of any game where you hide information from you opponents: "Can he/she do anything to me, if I do X to them?", like you mentioned. I see the argument of kingmaking used too often, fx when people use an instant spell in respone to being taken out. "Why would you put me in a worse position? You're just making him/her win!". What's interesting to me is when you're targeting someone else than the person taking you out. Fx someone attacking you for lethal, but another opponent put you in that spot where you're in lethal range. Imo, it would be fair to target either opponent, since they've both played their part in me losing the game. However, I know that many people feel differently, and that it's only fair to target the opponent doing the K.O. Any thoughts on this?

FWIW, Josh, the WoT finale was after the Covid shutdown interrupted the season's filming, forced rewrites from an actor choosing not to return, and created huge new expenses for safety protocols that didn't have matching budget increases. If it was mainly that finale putting you off, it's worth keeping in mind that there were some hugely exceptional factors that I'm sure you'd appreciate with your experience on the production side.

I was always under the impression that the wording of the ability didn’t care where the card was, if it got sacrificed ITB would grab it from any zone. But I guess it does make sense that it only knows the first zone it went to, because there’s a difference between the words “card” and “permanent”. Once it moves zones it’s a different instance of the card, and would lose it’s link as a “permanent” to the ability

Love haste, Samut voice of dissent is my favorite naya deck, and one of my 5 decks that i keep updated always. haste is also great in xyris, writhing storm, i run mass hysteria as a 1 mana haste source for all creatures, enables cryotolith rite for all your snakes after combat which, considering all the cards drawn, is pretty often.

Same boat my dudes. Played Standard until rotation rotated out my cards one time and then I was like "nah". Glad my friends told me about Commander.

Fun question I'd love to hear some discussion on here: do you think commander would improve if the reserve list was banned? Why or why not?

The game would get worse because Pygmy Hippo would be taken out.

I would enjoy to revisit more often some of the more evergreen topics. Like curve, removal, synergies, strategy, options... I think those are the episodes I enjoy the most. Topics we already know but even still can let someone thinking and rethinking again.

The only time I pay attention to thumbnails is when the title indicates that the video contains either new MtG spoilers or discussions of newly-banned cards, and I want a small preview of what’s coming.

My friend has made several custom superhero commanders, including Professor X and The Flash! I think it's fun, but working with them on balance can be frustrating :)

I mean in my play group, sometimes we will say "I'll take second", and try to side with the most powerful person; but that's when we think if we can get rid of the other player, we will be able to take out the person in the lead shortly after :P Also my one buddy usually focuses me down pretty hard in a game, so if he is about to take me out, I will do my best to do what I can on my way out. XD But anybody else that can do damage on their way out will also do it; Just makes sense :P

21:04 Why nobody mentioned Rakdos Charm when talking about graveyard hate??? :-) This card is seriously underrated and it's gonna be useful regardless of the meta: - Graveyard -> gone.. - Token maker -> instant kill - Strong artifact -> destroyed.

Listened to the podcast but I have comments for this episode and I have to get them out of me. 1) Blocking optimally even if you are still going to die is not kingmaking in any way, and if you believe it is then not doing so is kingmaking in the opposite direction because they player taking you out is essentially saying "I CAN pay the price to take you out, and that means I shouldn't have to pay that price." and you are leaving them in a stronger position than if you'd block like normal. 2) JLK on a card needs "Whenever you cast a spell, trigger an ability of another permanent you control, or activate a non-mana ability of a permanent you control: Draw a card." 3) The Flash: 2/2 with Doublestike and "When The Flash attacks or fights another creature, it deals damage equal to it's power to the player or planeswalker it is attacking or to the creature it is fighting." 4) Professor Charles Xavier: 1/3 with "Tap: Look at the top X cards of any players deck, where X is Professor Charles Xavier's power, put any number on the bottom in any order, then return the rest to the top in any order." and "Tap: Remove X creatures you don't control from combat, where X is Professor Charles Xavier's toughness."

For the side question of “why block/interact when you have no way to survive”: in the same way interacting with the person who is taking you out of the game could be considered king making by hampering them, if you don’t alter their boardstate when you have the chance to, you’re still king making because you’re leaving them with the resources to strike down another player. I’m with y’all. I’m always in the camp of go down swinging. It is normally one of the most memorable moments of a game for me anyway. Like, no I didn’t win but I left some impact on the game and had one last cool play. My favorite instance of this was using a free counterspell to save another player. The archenemy had lethal for two of us if this big spell resolved. Without it he could only take one of us out. So the optimal play was to counter that card even though by doing so I knew I’d make myself the target. So I did it, and by leaving the other player in the game, it actually lead to them coming back on the crackback, taking out the original archenemy, and then being out of the blue beat by the player who had been in last place the entire match board wise. If I let both of us get knocked out by that attack, the behind player wouldn’t have been able to have such a memorable underdog moment because all the pressure would have been on them from the player in the better position. This was a couple years ago at this point and my playgroup still talks about that moment to this day.

there's a reason players run Generous Gift and/or Beast Within because they can target a land. Also, blue has six ways from sunday to bounce everyone's board states in various ways including only bouncing the opponents stuff only. Including lands.

Talking about The Flash, Legends of Runeterra has a cool mechanic that would fit him pretty well: Scout. Scouts get extra attack phases, so long as you only attacked with Scouts in the first one. Otherwise, just give him Double Strike and have him summon an Afterimage copy with his stats. Now he hits twice as often as other double strikers.

You could accomplish the extra attack phase you described with the Exalted mechanic. I think The Flash should have Super Haste like the Unhinged card Rocket-Powered Turbo Slug.

The question about singles vs sealed product explains exactly why I’m a magic player and not a magic collector. I don’t want to have tons of cards. I want just my decks. I don’t have that kind of space.

Around the discussion of ettiquette at 28:44, I'd be interested on anyone's opinions about bagging counterspells. For instance(A,B,C,D. Active player is player A and clockwise from there); if you know player D tutored up a counterspell earlier. And player A plays their 'I win' card, and you are player B. If you have a counterspell, do you use it, or pass priority on a possibly game losing play, because you know they have to use their answer as the last priority and save the table? Or do you counter the spell because you need to stop the game losing play?

We have a "glorious death rule" and its like if you can kill them and they aremt playing due to bad draws or whatever. We normally If they want take em out and all players actively do try to kill em. If one player does it they are psuedo protected from others. It lets decks flex and players who arent really participating die in a spectscular fsshion. More often if hitting land or draw duds it will happen.

I use to quit at instant speed, HOWEVER IF I did and they had life link or a combat damage trigger they automatically get it even if they didn't technically get to deal combat damage to me. Because they worked hard for that position and I know how it feels to have someone spite scoot to make your trigger not happen and it sucks which is why I made a rule of if you scoop at instant speed they get whatever benefit they were try to get off of you automatically which I think is fair
