Maybe Vince has got a bit of a case of "imposter syndrome"? A lot of engineer types have it to some degree at times, myself included, and I believe it arises from the creative aspect of what we do, so it wouldn't surprise me if some artists of all types have the same sort of feelings sometimes. Generally we know what we're doing--we must or else we would not succeed for long--but feel that secretly we really don't, and have only managed to fool everyone else by luck, over and over. I think this happens because we don't know where our ideas come from. How did I figure out how to optimize this algorithm or circuit so effectively? I even look back on my own work sometimes and wonder how I actually did it. I understand how and why it works, but how did I dream up such a novel solution? Could I possibly do that sort of thing again? Fortunately for me, the answer has always been yes, I just keep right on doing it, and have been for decades, yet I still feel like I really don't know what I'm doing (and hope that no one finds out!). Rationally, I know better, but irrationally, this is often how I feel: just lucky to have fooled everyone again. If Vince has imposter syndrome, then like me, he might very well feel extremely lucky to have gotten anywhere with his music, let alone this far. Where do his creative ideas come from? I bet he has no idea, either. Or maybe he's just being modest, because frankly his illustrious career speaks quite loudly for itself.

"Happy little accidents" ... he must have been watching some Bob Ross videos back in the day. ;D What has always amazed me about Vince's work starting with the first Yaz album, is his uncanny ability to create such warm and organic sounds from cold inanimate electronic chips. He's so on the money with getting the song to be good with a piano/voice or guitar/voice (sometimes you don't actually need more). In the 90's I used to start with synths because truthfully, I'm a real drummer (and a lazy drummer programmer lol) but I found going straight to synths and the tech side means you often get distracted and the sounds seem to be chosen by the synth and not necessarily YOU the songwriter. He is such a wise man!

This guy was basically the eighties! depeche mode erasure yaz and just know what hes doing and how to do it whcih is important. ALl these bands sound very good and have a clean analog sound. Too bad you need all that equipment to make those sounds or i would be doing it. Guess its time to buy a guitar and start writing then. Thanks Vince. your awesome. you deserve more respect than you recieve in my book you were a large part of the electronic music that i still listen to this day. I love the clean analog sound and wish i could do the same. Its the best. Theres nothing more strongly emotional than a deep vibrato strong synth sound with heavy but clean sound to it. And using the scope probably makes it perfect. I though of using a scope but dont have the money to dive into so much technology. your awesome. keep doing it i hope analog never dies and just gets cleaner and better and more popular.

Yes, they were created by Mr. Daniel Miller himself on an ARP 2600 (second hand, previously owned by Elton John) at Blackwing Studios. He could spend a whole day just to find the right solid, thick perfect kick sound. Vince loved it, the rest hated the process.
@rbrtck
7 ай бұрын
@@benelux365 And after Vince left, in-band production work fell on Alan Wilder's (the new guy at the time) shoulders. The others have never been interested in finishing and polishing the songs. That said, things can change over time, and it sure seems that Martin was bitten by the synth bug some time ago. He's got a world-class collection of equipment at his home studio, including literal walls of modular synths. While his collection doesn't appear to be quite as varied and eclectic as Vince's, it might well be bigger with the insane number of modern Eurorack modules he has, to complement his vintage synths and several modern analogue synths.

I think he and Andy probably came across the word one day, and felt it was fitting, somehow. Legend has it that one of the tapes they recorded an early demo on was marked "Erasure" because it was to be erased for reuse, and it was mistaken to be the name of their two-man band, but it stuck.

It depends on what you do with it. It only takes a few patch cords to set up a simple, standard signal path, and then you can use it like the most basic of non-modular synths. How complicated it will get depends entirely on you and your ideas, and it's nice to have a bunch of oscillators, filters, envelopes, and such to work with, if that's what you need.
@jaggass

If i had one i keep the use of it fairly simple for bass sounds kick etc as the ARP2600 is good at that.
