Adventure Mods - What worth and what not?
Online course "The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler": rtw-adventures...
I am sure that you have heard many times about the adventure modifications. All of the adjustments and twits need to be made before we start our trips. In this video, I will tell you what I learned in the last ten years, what works and what not really.
I decided to make this video because there are some fundamental misconceptions when it comes to the adventure modifications. The truth is that most of them are not really necessary! It is going to be a bit long video, but I promise that the information I am about to give you could save you a lot of time and money.
And here now you might say: Pavlin, what are talking about? Look your bike now, you have changed almost everything! Yes, I did, but it doesn’t mean that everything was worth it and this is exactly what I plan to tell you now!
The examples I about to give you now are from my bike and my experience, but they can be easily applied for almost all bikes and situations. All right, I will start with the most difficult or I will say the most expensive modification - the suspension! Was it worth it to make all the changes I have done?
The simple answer is Yes and No! Let me explain to you what I mean by that. It was worth it because I was able to reduce the weight with almost 11kg, comparing to the stock parts. It also allowed me to ride faster and stable on bad terrains and to avoid this bad diving off the front every time when I pressing the front brake, but it came with a certain price.
By saying this I don’t mean the price if the parts itself. In my case all the money I spent the conversion I got it back by selling the stock parts, I am talking about something else, something no one ever talks about. Keep watching, because now things become interesting.
The suspension was made for a 120kg bike. I use it on a 200kg bike. To have the effect I was looking for I needed to change the springs as well, but even the stiffer springs for the model were not stiff enough to hold 200kg. So I need to add even about 1cm spacers to make it harder. As a result of that instead of having almost 300mm suspension travel I was left with no more than 240 - 250mm.
Fair enough, 250mm is far better than the stock 200mm, but… on the rear, I still have the stock suspension travel. To fix this problem I need to change the rear shock, the bones and actually change the whole geometry of the bike and of course, I said - no way! I corrected the high a bit by lowering the forks from triple clamps and actually lose more from the suspension travel, so finally, I finished with almost the same as the original stock setup. The only difference was that now it is a bit stiffer, but I can have the same effect by just changing the springs inside.
