Thanks for the video! Seeing you go through and explain the rebuild of this carb helped me a lot in rebuilding the carb on my XR 650R. I installed the large jet and free flow coupler between the engine and carb along with a different needle and seat and a free flow spark arrester for the tailpipe. My bike had lots of power before, but now it just screams on gasoline or ethanol!!!! My bike can also run on CNG, (compressed natural gas) or H2, (hydrogen) or any blend of the two.

I'm learning how to do my own maintenance on my bike so when it came time to clean the carb I was afraid by it needed a cleaning real bad. I started with the throttle removing the cables down to the carb where I finally removed it from the bike , however when I tried to remove the bowl I stripped the bolts. I don't know why it was so tight but that prevented me from taking apart the carb for thorough cleaning and instead only surface cleaning until I figure out how to get those bolts off. Although I ran into some problems I did learn some things along the way and better prepared the next time knowing that I have your very informative well explained and clear explanation of how-to video I can follow. I like to ask you, it never backfired as bad as it does now after I put the carb back on,. I never replaced anything on the carb never change anything maybe the cables may have gotten adjusted differently since but other than that every time I let off the throttle it backfires and pops and I hate it, any suggestions.

Hi William. Thanks for your thorough explanation. The carb bolts have given me problems in the past also. Not sure why they tighten up so much, but maybe it has something to do with being so close to the heat of the engine. In the past I've had to use a hand punch driver to assist in removing the bolts. Also, finding the exact right screwdriver head helps. Regarding the carb cleaning. The most important parts of the carb to clean are underneath the bowl. The jets are often what get clogged. I'm guessing that when you removed the carb and jostled it around, some gunk was knocked loose and is sitting inside one of the jets now. I have another video on this channel regarding how to clean your carburetor using simple green and boiling water. It would be a good idea to get the bowl off for this process though so you can remove the jets. I remember when it came time to work on my carburetor, I removed and installed it multiple times because I also wanted it to be a quick and easy fix. But since the carb handles a huge responsibility, it will require a thorough cleaning before going back in. I think many of us on this channel can agree that we unexpectedly get good at removing the carb. Hope you can get your XR running smooth again. Nobody likes a big bore beast that backfires. Good luck and have a great day. Ride safe out there.

For my XR the pilot screw should be turned out about 1 5/8 to 2 turns. That means turning the pilot screw all the way in (gently seating it), and turning it out the required amount of turns. Depending on what vehicle you're using this carburetor on, the manual will specify how many turns out the pilot screw should be. Minor adjustments can be made beyond this, but the idle screw should be used in conjunction to fully set idle. Hopefully you find this helpful.

Yes - agree. Great video. Thank you very much for posting this. I have a Keihin PD that I took off of my 1985 XR350R with the single carb. However the carb looks just like the one in your video (at least from the outside). The bike sat for almost 10 years in my garage (it ran fine when I last rode it). I drained the tank and gave it fresh gas. Could start the engine but it won't run and there's no power when I turn the throttle. I'm going to follow your instructions for disassembling the carb and will clean it. Hopefully I will find something that explains why the bike won't run. What parts do you recommend I get besides the gaskets and the air valve? Thanks! Mike

hey mate good video helped me understand alot about the carb. i have a 93 xr600r that had been not running for about 2 years. i had my stator rewound a new cdi and my pulse generator cleaned to get it running again. it ran good on idle but it will only rev just past half throttle and then it will spit fire and bore out, I have taken my carb apart cleaned all the jets as you have shown me but it is still doing it?????? I havent touched the air/fuel mixture screw tho? it has no choke on my carb and has a after market exhaust. and I think it might have different jets as it has no choke??

Hi, thanks for posting this to help me tune my 1980 XR500 restoration project. My carb is a PD 07B and while very similar, mine has some differences that I am curious about. The biggest difference is on the non-throttle cable side is the cable-actuated choke and attached to that is a linkage arm that also acts on a plunger rod that goes down into the float bowl, that part is drastically different than yours. I have seen this on other Honda carbs when I search for images but have no clue what the function is. I understand fuel injection much more than carbs. Any idea what this plunger is for? Thanks

It appears that if you (me) accidentally let the throttle spring unwind a bit, the required tension is immediately lost, and there does not appear to be any way to salvage it. Is this correct, or is there a way to salvage the spring and return it to the proper tension?

Cleaned and rebuilt carb (with your video as help) and cleaned airbox with new UNI filter, adjusted the valves, put it all back together and won't start. Im wondering if you had any tips, fuel screw is set 2 turns out. I set the idle screw but without it running I'm not sure if its correct. First time working on a bike, so it could be something simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey! Congrats on getting an XR. Sucks to hear about the issues. 1. Did you run the bike between each job? For example. Clean carb, run bike, clean airbox, run bike, adjust valves, run bike? 2. Did you clean out the fuel tank and replace gas? 3. If the idle screw is set too low that could prevent starting. Do you ever try to start with the throttle a little open to see if you can get her going?
@3cvaughn
4 жыл бұрын
@@XRLand Thanks for the quick reply. I did not run between jobs, I did clean tank and replace with fresh 91, and I haven't attempted to start with throttle open, only time I've opened the throttle is during the honda dance for cold start but not during the compression kick. I have the idle screw set to just barely engage the throttle pulley and have tinkered with it more and less engaged. I am curious just how open the throttle slide needs to be. I know theres a small gap between too open and too closed and I feel like I'm just outside that margin. Also just pulled the spark plug and its very old with lots of black char, I am going to get a new one and maybe that will help.
@XRLand
4 жыл бұрын
@@3cvaughn You probably already know this now, but best to do one project at a time so that diagnosing a problem is easier. Ahh the spark plug. Excellent idea. That could be the problem. With the idle screw, it should open the throttle slide a couple millimeters if I remember correctly, but it's been a while. Sorry that's not exactly a very accurate tip. You're doing the right thing playing around with it a bit. Hopefully the spark plug is the culprit. It is a bit weird how the bike ran before, and then stopped running. Could be another part causing the problem, but always start with the simple. Let me know how that goes please.

Valves weren’t being adjusted on the compression stroke TDC, that why it wouldn’t start. Put the bike in gear and set TDC after the intake valves opened and closed. Started up and ran smooth. Still some black smoke so might be running rich, I’m going to put stock jets in the carb and tune

Thank you kindly good sir!! This is an amazing video, so well presented and very well edited. Good in conjunction with this guide which I also found very useful. www.deathridge.com.au/how-to-fix-those-xr600r-carb-issues.html If you are not to busy, I have a process-of-elimination question. I have torn down the float section of my XR600 keihin carb twice now, and having found some initial problems and blockages, and adjusted the float tang twice (incorrect distance the first time), and given it a good clean. After I reassembled - the carb now leaks all over the place as soon as I turn the fuel on, apparently from both the float-bowl drain hole, and seems to leak around the gasket. My question : Surely the only things which would cause BIG leaks (aka fuel pissing out around float bowl) would be: 1.incorrectly installed gasket 2. Incorrectly adjusted float level (I feel sure I got this right this time). Is there anything else that would cause this?
@XRLand
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind comment and useful link. The carb guide you shared is thorough. If the gasket is dried out then it can leak. Have you tried leaving it in overnight and seeing if it leaks the following day? Turning off the fuel of course to allow the gasket to be wet and make a nice seal.
@gnuPirate
3 жыл бұрын
@@XRLand Thanks heaps for your response mate. After a week, it is still pissing fuel out the float bowl drain, (it doesn't seem to be coming from the gasket at all as I had thought was happening as-well, last week). I guess the float must be set incorrectly, but I made sure to set it as close to to 14.5 mm as I could -- per the guide I linked, and also using the method per the tutorial video linked here -- kzitem.info/news/bejne/lLCVr4Oeq4Wkino I have done this twice already, as I had set it incorrectly the first time. I guess I need to take the carb off and do it a third time. I can't think of another reason for this --

@@XRLand One other thing I have noticed is a difference from your video and the guide I posted (as well as my own Keihin PD) is the "plastic doohickey" that fits over the main jet is absent on your carburettor. Is it necessary to have it? I am trying to reassemble the float bowl with the carby still on the bike, and the plastic doohickey doesn't want to stay in it's position. I'd just as soon toss it if I don't need it.

awesome video thank you. i have a question if your still on here? i bought a 1994 xr600r about 3 weeks ago for my daily driver. it doesnt seem to be beaten or abused. so ive gone through and changed the oil and filter spark plug and air filter and put a 39 tooth rear sprocket on it for more top end speed. so the first time i rode it was maybe 8 miles to a store and back and it was fine but the next ride i went on it seemed to start a bit harder and it would stall out on me only when i came to a stop so now i have to keep it reved up so it wont die. i just adjusted the valves cause it was a bit noisey the intake valves were right on but the exhaust valves were about 4 mm to loose. and it still dies on me at a stop or it will idle up to around 3 thousand rpm. SO i took the carb off today after watching your awesome and extemely helpfull video and found it was a bit dirty in there mostly yellowed old gas stains. but did find that when i pulled the slow idle jet i couldnt see through it. it wasnt totally gunked but did have a flake of crud in there. but the biggest thing i found was when i took the fuel air screw out that as you said should be about 2 turns or less out it was only 3/4 of a turn out! and it has been shooting out carbon onto my rear fender. do you think its just been running to rich? thanks...jeff
@XRLand
10 жыл бұрын
Hello Jeff. Did the carburetor sit for an extended time? If you found gunk in the jets then it is probable that there are more deposits clogging other passageways in the carburetor. The XR could stall due to being too rich, but it can also stall from a clogged carb also (obviously). If it sat for a year or more, then maybe a full cleaning is due. Let me know more information please. The black soot found on the tail is likely from being rich. Do you know if the jets are stock? Any aftermarket mods? Thanks.
