At the time of this recording (September 2023), I was a very new rider and had been riding my brand new KTM Duke 125 for ONLY 9 DAYS before this incident happened!
It was my Wednesday morning commute to work at around 8am. As I approched the Zebra crossing, I noticed a pedestrian was about to cross and so I decided to wait as I was in no rush. As I looked down to turn off my signal (9 days of riding meant that muscle memory hadn't developed yet), I got rear ended by a distracted driver.
It's not clear what the driver was distracted by after reviewing the footage, but I did notice a packet of cigarettes on his passenger seat so I am purely speculating that he was reaching for them or something else. I did not see a mobile phone and did not question him about it (rookie mistake).
Fortunately, the impact was minor and at a slow speed, however, it was enough to force me to lose control and drop my bike. The impact caused temporary pain in my hands because I gripped the handlebars too tightly (new rider mistake). Thankfully, no other injuries or whiplash was sustained. However, the bike was damaged (mostly cosmetic) and I owned that bike for only 2 weeks.
I exchanged details and insurance with the driver and he agreed to pay out in full himself. However, after days of back and forth, his insurers reached out to me and agreed to settle and pay for damages.
I took the bike to a mechanic shop to inspect the damages and they quoted me roughly £321. Full list of damages as follows:
1. Licence Plate Holder - £30.90
2. Gear shift lever - £40.75
3. Clutch lever - £27
4. Front footpeg - £23
5. Labour - £200 (I know, don't ask why, that's what they quoted lol).
Since then, all legal and financial process were resolved...
And most importantly, this incident hasn't discouraged me from riding and I still enjoy doing so for both commuting and social rides!
