Hey there,
I made a rustic mountain sign for my friend Huyen who is leaving our work to begin a new job. I’m excited for her next chapter but sad to see her go. I decided to make her a farewell gift and knowing how much she loves the mountains, it only made sense to make her a rustic mountain sign. I was able to give this sign to Huyen on her last day at work.
To start this project, I sketched out the mountains on graph paper and then transferred the sketch over to cardboard to help me visualize the sign and stay organized. I used reclaimed fence pickets for the mountains. I screwed the pickets onto a straight sheet of OSB material and used this as a jointer sled to square up one edge of all of the pickets. I then ran all of them back through the table saw to rip them down to a consistent width. Once this was done, I ran them all back through to resaw them down to a uniform thickness of ½”. I miter cut all the pieces and fit them like a puzzle into their final positions to create the mountains. The back panel was assembled using wood glue and pocket holes and then torched and wire-brushed to bring out the wood grain and color for added character. I used a contact adhesive to glue the mountain pieces together prior to attaching them to the panel and then glued the mountains onto the panel with wood glue. The frame was made out of 2x3 construction lumber, torched and then wire-brushed. Finally, the snow caps were dry brushed with a white chalk paint.
I hope you like this project and maybe make one for yourself. There are many ways to complete projects and this video is just one example of how I went about mine. Thanks for watching. Please like, share and subscribe.
Take care and stay safe,
JL
