"It's never Lupus" is pretty much one of a small handful of running jokes throughout the entire show's run. In real life, "Lupus" is hard to diagnose because it shares symptoms with other diseases, and most are incorrectly diagnosed as something other than Lupus. You have to realize the time compression in a show basically squeezes like 10 years of medical diagnosis and treatments into the span of a day.
@Low_commotion

Not to mention, it says something about House as a character; for him it _was_ lupus, and the failure of Cuddy & her team to diagnose him is what lead to his limp & cane.

I'd say sarcasm comes easier to British people, LOL! Hugh Laurie is a very sweet & shy person in real life, even though he's so good at playing a-hole characters. He was sooo good as the villainous arms dealer in The Night Manager.

@@gozerthegozarian9500 Actually My Favourite role by Hugh is in "Avenue 5". I just think he is so funny in that. But you are right, sarcasm is a way of life for us Brits, I think it's essential for our survival in the 21st Century. Ha Ha Ha.

I love how mouse brings up chronic diseases. We spend most of our time in and out of hospitals, so we get to understand more medical terms through osmosis. So watching a bad doc show really bring out the old “that really grinds my gears” mode.

My best friend has chronic pain from sciatica that's resulted from a L5/S1 spinal fusion, and their on so many meds (even one that requires government approval), and even then, they spend most of their time not moving due to the pain. Myself (who has worked as a nurse, and been reading and watching medical anything since I was 8), their physio, and their chronic pain specialist has told them they can't sit all day, they have to move, however the negative feedback loop from the pain is hard for them to break through. Chronic pain is a vicious cycle. House I like because it's out there. It may be over the top, but the underlying methodology of looking at symptoms, and trying to figure out what the root cause is by trying different treatments, makes sense, even if House as an IRL doctor would have been fired hundreds of times, and probably been sent to prison

I like the show, but when your condition shows up on the show it's so frustrating. They treated my condition in the show like its just a minor inconvenience that's easily treatable, not a crippling part of you that you can never forget for a moment

This can be frustrating, but it is also realistic. Any case that has a hint of ambiguity results in every doctor available shooting in the dark until something works. Camps often form over what the diagnosis is and how to proceed, which leads to flaring egos, wasted time and a steadily decreasing chance of a full recovery.

And if you're in America, exponentially increasing costs because all your doctors are fuckin' useless shitbeaks who wanna keep you there longer suffering instead of treating you to begin with. In that way, being incompetent, stupid, and borderline psychopathic, House is absolutely accurate. Everything else about it fuckin' sucks.

The thing about lupus is that it has an extremely broad symptomatic, it can affect every single system in the body, so when tv show run out of differential diagnosis, most of the time they can put lupus there as a filler.

Mouse is right about chronic autoimmune conditions and the painkillers and prednisone ofc. Those things actively ruin your life, but you can't live without them either and they're sometimes the last things that make you feel normal. I just wish doctors tell relevant patients more about their long term side-effects instead of singing its praises.

It's kinda funny seeing people get frustrated over this show, it's my fave show of all time, it's not perfect by any means, still entertaining. The whole Point of the show is that it's unrealistic, the dean even says " there's no such thing as diagnostic of medicine, it was only made for house". So idk why people get so worked up over it, I still love it regardless, am I going to use this show to diagnose people? Of course not, it's just cool how crazy the cases are and looking into the mind of someone who looks at patients in a different manner than normal.

@rogoth01themasterwizard11

no, it isn't, an addiction is categorised as you being unable to go without thinking about or using *insert thing that's addicted to here*, medicine dependence is you can easily go without it, you won't have any negative behavioural changes etc, but your body will cause you some severe problems without said *thing*, you can be dependent on something while not being addicted to it, while the inverse is not possible.

I was basically addicted to pain killers as a kid bc of "growing pains" and later menstrual pain. I took the same pills my mom took after her back surgery and that every day multiple times and now I've gotten used to my body being in some amount of pain every day and I am scared to get dependent on it again. Be careful kids 🫡
