European dryers don't have a hose blowing hot air out of the house, as these are very eco-unfriendly. We have condensation dryers that use the same hot air again and again and only condensate the water out of it. It collects in that tank. The water is distilled water and can be used in your steam iron, which saves money and prevents chalking.

I would not use this water for a steam iron. In the water are fine particles of fibers from the drying clothes. Those fibers will clog the steam iron. That is what we experienced in our household. You could take rain water in stead.

@@dikkiedik53 My mother used it for years, but you are right: at the end she encountered some filthy stuff coming out of the iron. However I the cumulated costs of distilled water would have been far higher than a new iron. And rain water isn't without fine particles either …

I hear you all came prepared : "ik spreek een beetje Nederlands" 🙂 Take your time getting used to living here. Most people here are more focussed on eating fresh food and not stuffing their fridge for the entire week. Please watch Eris'and Tammy's video's on eating in the Netherlands... just try most of it. I Understood that both of you have jobs. Some things are very different than in the USA concerning work, sickness and vacation. Overhere it's common to use the number of vacation days. Your employer isn't allowed to prevent you from using them over the year. When you get ill, it is common to call your employer and tell him that your ill... the employer will understand and wish you a good recovery. Seeing a doctor, it's important that you find a "huisarts" (General Practitioner) in your neighborhood soon, aswell as a pharmacy. BTW get insurance asap ! It's not too expensive (about €220,- for the three of you, Alyssa is free until 18 y.). Visits to your Huisarts are free of charge when insured and prescriptions are sometimes free or else with a small contribution. Getting ill won't bankrupt you. Also your pay continues while being ill. Employers in the Netherlands are forbidden to fire you while being ill or because of you having been ill. There are some exceptions. I'm sure you all will do fine here and I'm curious for your experiences.

You have a wonderful view. I remember that a lot, my wife went to school there "Inholland". And for your kid, yes it is not a small thing to move to another country. But perfect timing, since it is vacation. Just know your neighbourhood: closeby "historische tuin schoonoord". If it is a rainy day and you want to shop "Zuidplein". And if you have a car go to the beach "brouwersdam", "Burgh Haamstede" or visit places like "Zierikzee" and "Goes". Take the A29, over the bridge and turn right to the N59 (tip dont drive to hard since there are speed camera's all over the N59. Everyone knows it, now you do too :)

So .... appelstroop and hagelslag ... watch it, your girl is being 'Dutchified' already😁 A tip? Get used to the metric system as soon as possible. It might save you from a lot of frustrations. For example think of cooking and baking: no cups but grams, and temperature in Celsius! Trying to start a conversation with a Dutchman/woman? Start by discussing the weather. That's a typical icebreaker here. I'd love to hear more. Thanks for this one.

Make sure you have good and sturdy extra chainlocks for the bicycles so you can lock the bicycle(s) together or to a pole, fence or bicyclerack. There is a high theft-factor for bicycles. The newer and 'electricker', the more popular they are. Considering culture differences, what I've heard from especially expats/visitors from the US is that they had to get used to our secular society (as in: not only freedom of religion but also freedom from religion). Also, overhere the customer is NOT always right and we are not really a litigious society where most people don't have lawyers to sue everybody... 😉

Well hi there in Rotterdam this time with your family ;-) Tips...well yeah..ehm... one of the tips would have been: get old bikes with excellent locks. In general our bike locks are more expensive then our bikes are since we all use bikes, and so especially new fancy bikes get stolen quite easily. But Michael obviously already got himself a Move Bike. I may hope so that he's got a serious lock with that bike! Other tip would be: The Dutch (and not only the Dutch) greet strangers with "Hallo" , or "Goedenmorgen" or "Goedenmiddag" or "Goedenavond". We never ask strangers how they are doing, that's weird, we just don't do that, so don't do that ! Every question requires a sincere answer. A question here in The Netherlands needs to be answered. So if you do not want to know the answer, do not ask the question: "Hi how are you doing?" Expect from people you know to really expect you to listen to their sincere answer to that question, and you to sincerely respond to that answer they just gave you ! We never ask a stranger how he or she is doing. That's rude! You just can't go and say Hi, how are you doing and turn your head away and walk off, that's really a perfect way to get into a conflict with a Dutchy ;-)!

The Dutchies are quite simple to handle. Just tell them what you think or want from them (respectfully, but without beating around the bush). If you are told without beating around the bush, just don't take it too personal. Don't waste time of the Dutch. Be on time. Make appointments for everything, dentist, doctor, teacher, plumber, electrician, visit from friends, to friends, just plan everything and stick to that plan to the minute. Don't talk about Dutchies their bikes. If it is an expensive and beautiful one, they will feel embarrassed and will start to make excuses for that. Showing off with beautiful things is not really a Dutchies' thing to do too much. If it is a wreck, they will think you are out of your mind because talking about a wreck is not really logical. Just be yourself, learn the language, see that your daughter will thrive here more than in the US probably, be happy and take the weather, flat tyres on your bike, the cold and the silent city in the winter for granted. We'll make up for it in summer. And this will be a tough winter (because of energy crisis because of Russia/Ukraine situation).
