I personally would display it off on its own, it would definitely detract from what is sounding like a fantastic base replica once completed

That’s gonna be cool when it’s done. My favorite actors in the show were Martin Landau and Barry Morse(RIP). I went to school with a friend that had a dad that looked identical to Martin Landau, he used to take us bowling every Friday night. His dad would bowl and we would play tag and hang out in the classic arcade video game section all night, it was fun. His dad was cool. That was about 1982- ‘83. I was about 12 and I’m 50 now, but all those reruns of Space 1999 were on TV at the time and I used to watch the original broadcast from 1975-1977.

nice touch with the lighting there Boyd. Regarding Main Mission, the original release of this kit actually had a section that was made for the little model but I always thought it looked out of place that way as well. I ended up displaying it separately when I built this kit several yrs ago. Look forward to following this project.

Looking great, like all your work does. My brother and I are actually building this right now as well so we're following your progress eagerly. With regard to Main Mission, personally I'd keep it separate from the moonbase. The different scales would just look too jarring to me.

Personally, I would leave Main Mission off the surface away from the moon base in a separate display, and if there's room, perhaps build the mountain range forming the background on the show. Moon base Alpha was built in the bottom of a crater, so the mountain range is actually the walls of the crater. You might have to triple the area of the project, but in the right lighting, it would look awesome and true to the show. Great work, though... awesome job!

Hi Boyd, Go big or go home.... Use a black base matching the length of the Eagle... Add "moonpad" feet to the base. The terrain base centers on the black base, which leaves room on either end for the extra stuff. On the right side, add the stun gun and comlock. On the left side, toward the rear, Main Mission on a short pedestal to elevate and attract attention. In front of Main Mission, on the base, add descriptions of the models, or just go with the Space:1999 logo and a cast photo. Use a small rectangle of plexiglass, attached to pedestal with one screw, for Main Mission platform... Then you can rotate platform to get multi-angle views of Main Mission. Hope this helps!

The original MPC kit, that I still have a couple of reissues, had an indentation on the base for the Main Mission part. I don't think the revised kit is meant to house Main Mission. I like the newer kit, it cleared up a lot of inaccuracies in the original such as the number of launchpads, the size of the eagles, and a separate travel tube system. The old kit had those molded into the base. My opinion, and what I plan to do with mine, is to display Main Mission separately. Really like the lighting you're doing on both. A bit of trivia: The original table top model of Moonbase Alpha did not have a lighting system. The windows were all some applied metal foil that reflected studio lighting, making the windows appear to be lit. Thanks and great job. Can't wait to see the finished model.

The Main Mission build is very cool. It occurred to me that you could have used the same lighting technique used on the Enterprise E and light the wall panels like on the actual sets. Mask off the light panels on the curved wall leading into Kepnig’s office and the wall with the main view screen and light block the panel frames and build a light box behind the wall with LED’s. Of course you said you didn’t want to go too far on the build. But I think it would make the model come alive! And I’d display Main Mission and the laser and comlock separately from the moon base diorama.

Great build, the lighting makes a huge difference in the mission control room. I would put the control room as a separate display next to the moon base maybe on an acrylic stand to set it apart. I feel having it on the moon base display distracts from the small scale overview of the lunar surface.

Boyd, I see your conundrum. Without knowing that you were going to put an eagle elevated in the back, I would have suggested that main mission go there. However, I do agree that the entire display on the same footprint is probably the way to go. Have you considered making it more of a museum display? Each of the different elements could have their own label that identified what they were and their scale. For example the stun gun and commlock have identification labels and 1:1, the eagle would have a label for example Eagle 1 scale 1:72 (I am assuming you are using the smaller eagle kit). And so on. What way the differences in scale are acknowledged up front. In that case putting Maon Mission in one of the corners, slightly elevated makes sense. What ever you do will look great though, you are truly a gifted modeller and I really enjoy watching your channel.

I think mounting the maim mission off to the side would be preferable. Siting on the lunar surface just yanks your eye away from the diorama. And as another idea, looking at the overall size of diorama, would you consider wall mounting it instead? Then you could display everything in front of it with out eclipsing any details, and perhaps frame it with the main mission screen border. Just a thought.

Hi Trek Works. In answer to what to do with the Main Mission part of your model display. What about having it mounted where you were going to put it but having a white line with black edges in a sorta zigzag across the corner to separate the two scenes. A bit like you would see in a comic strip. That way you could add some detail to the outside moon surface and walls just like as it appears in the show. Great work by the way and a happy new year to you.

Personally I would not display Main Mission on the Moon City display base because it detracts from the scale. I get why they included it as an enlarged detail focus but I would display it by itself in an acrylic display case. I would also put a space background around 2 of the sides with a planet to create a horizon backdrop to give it more scale.

I was thinking about making a separate base for my "Main Mission Alpha". I might add a few buildings using the tint buildings as a guide with plastic PVC pipes running in between. Maybe even create one of the Eagle landing pads and nearby building connecting up to it. It doesn't correspond to the base, but nothing on the base corresponds to this building.

Were exactly in the station is this Command Center located? [ I've seen only random episodes over the years leavingme clueless. ] I'm asking because in comic books an important 1st time representation of a command center is sometimes revealed to readers as an expanded view of a smaller point of referrence, on a larger mapped out area below and behind it. And a clear funnel pointing down to the point of referrence. For example: Here's where the command center is located on this base. And here is what goes on inside of it. An optional path with the funnel is instead place particular colored LED on an outside corner of the base's enlarged command center. And a similar color LED at the point of referrence of this base diarramma.
