Most of the leading men actors in the JA films dance well but can often look stiff. Jeremy Northam's performance is superlative. Look at how he holds himself, his line, his posture, and how he moves....he must have a dance background.

Actually, this one (for the one time through they actually dance it) is closer to the notation I have for the dance (a club crib sheet dated 1987) than the Pride & Prejudice version. On the other hand, this particular dance is notorious for having lots of variations - one club I danced with for a while danced it every week for a couple of months without repeating a variation...

@lindenpeters2601

Yeah, isn't it gorgeous? It might help you to know that many classical pieces are classified and named by dance name: minuet, waltz, polonaise, polka, ...that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Now notice how little physical co tact there is between dancers, and then look up a Strauss waltz with dancers. You'll see why waltzing was considered very sexy/intimate when it was popular.

The P&P version is a bit clonky and awkward, largely because the music is at a slower tempo, suited to a different step, and so the simple walking step can not move smoothly. The choreography, however, is more accurate, as they dance down the set and return in the second position. The mid-dance entrance and repeated cast figure used here is a screenwriter's device, and unlikely to happen at a real dance.
@Poodlepups

But what is going on? They start the dance one way (butting in at the head of the couples, yet) and then they just cast, cast, cast down the line and the dance is over! Mr. Knightly looks like he's enjoying it, though!

Continued: A reviewer wrote that it is the only version that (s)he has been able to find, but I have found that an English group, the Pemberley Players (they of the ITV's version of "Northanger Abbey"), has put out two collections of music from the various Austen movies. Go to fleming-williams dot co dot uk / publications and click on P & P Collection Vol. II. Perhaps this will sound more contemporary to the era.
@gfa527

I completely agree with your assessment. The P&P version doesn't flow as freely as this version of the dance.
@jonberger
13 жыл бұрын
Almost nothing to do with the actual dance. The version in Pride and Prejudice WAS the real dance, beautifully adapted to the dialogue. This one is right out of the choreographer's fertile imagination, and there was no reason at all to change it since there ISN'T any dialogue. And they're both totally out of period. Mr. Beveridge's Maggot is several decades too late for either book.

One question (other than on the unrealistic staging): Why are some of the gentleman wearing Hessians (boots)? This is a ball; standard protocol would be stockings and dancing shoes.
@tregnier279

I would disagree. I many cases, I think the stockings look better (especially during the dancing scenes.) Besides, all the gentleman would be wearing the boots during the day anyway.

Because the stockings and dancing shoes look ridiculous - I couldn't stop laughing in P&P95. I'm all for historical accuracy to a certain extent, but improving aesthetics in a way that is still believable is more important, I think.

Lol it is definitely a look. But it looks less silly if you consider that it's very similar to what American football players wear from the waist down. I sometimes find myself looking at football players and thinking how they would "cut a fine figure" in period dress! Haha Also I think this was a period when long pants for men was just coming into fashion, so it all depends on the interpretation of who's making the movie.
