Jeeze that TH900 treble is way out of control! I could never use that thing without giant EQ. Pretty decent demo - shows the 6k peak on the HD800 clearly and the T1's unnatural and aggressive "sheen" in the mid treble. Might also want to throw in a commonly known headphone into the mix as well next time you use this mic, like the HD600 or 650/6XX. I'm kind of surprised how much more "normal" the MDR-F1 sounds. To buy the headphone used in the Sandstorm music video or not...decisions, decisions

Yes, the HD800 is an amazing headphone, for years it was considered among top 5 best in the world. It is extremely transparent, so it will sound different with different amplifiers. Many complain about a peak at 6 kilohertz and that the sound is overly analytical. It’s not a bass heavy headphone. But I like it, especially with tube amplifiers, which warm it up nicely. Still has the best soundstage I have ever heard, of any headphone. It is currently priced below the 800S, and can be found for lower than retail, which makes it a great value.

Yeah HD800s are pricey but very, very good. I actually got my original HD800 for $700, & that was back in 2009 when it was $1,650 retail. The guy was selling them on Craigslist, he had barely used them. I met him in person, he said he was selling because he couldn’t hear the difference between the HD800 and other headphones! @@bertreviews seeing as im in the under 500 realm here it seems like i will wait a good while to get some HD8000s or anything of that high quality.... i basically just learned i like a hot headphone (decent bass bump but clearly audible on all levels... plus tbh the audio seems louder on the 800s so that might be a possible reason).. so i just got to find something else similar in the price range that aren't THAT expensive
@duke86fan
4 жыл бұрын
actually debateably it might ALSO be because the sennheiser 800s were actually slightly louder... you mention before about doing tone tests for what im going to call "channel pull" for the hell of it.. it seems like the sennheiser was about .5DB to 1DB louder compared to the other headphones, thus a more lush and vibrant sound.. if you do a 3rd one of these a big test would be making sure all impedences and sound systems are accounted for by getting a specific VU on a single spot of the song and make sure every headphone is that loud... thus we dont get a loudness war or maybe i just had to use my M50s and it would be perfect

This was the first time I did headphone audio comparisons in this way and I made an error in that I did not accurately match volume for the HD800; so in this video the HD800 sounds just a bit "louder" than the rest. So that might bias your listening experience. When you listen to HD800 in this video, turn your volume down just slightly for a better comparison. I have since learned from this and in all my other videos the volume is matched! Thanks

I can only give you my opinion because everyone has different tastes, and although I have heard a lot, I haven't heard every headphone. Given that, the best closed headphone in my opinion is still the Sony R10, but it's impossible to get now and even if you find one (and afford it) you can't use it for daily listening. Best all-round closed headphone (that I have heard) I would say is a toss-up between the ZMF Eikon and Atticus. Zach at ZMF is doing some amazing work. For open headphones,of those I have heard, I think Focal is the leader at the moment, and the Focal Clear is outstanding. If you don't want to break the bank, the Massdrop 6XX is essentially a Sennheiser HD650...for $199 - a crazy bargain. BUT, this doesn't mean you won't enjoy other headphones, so I encourage you to keep researching.

@@bertreviews I understand that what you say is your opinion but I do appreciate the time you took out to give a lengthy and honest response. I have heard of the EMF and they are based in my city of Chicago. Now I just need to track them down for a listen. Crazy as it may sound, I may just keep the Focal Clear and pair it with a V-Moda Crossfade M-100 just because I really want a closed headphone to deliver loud and banging sound when I want to crank my music up. It's only after buying the Sony MDR-Z1R I realized that I really want more audiophile and best sound through my open cans for a more pleasant listening experience on slower and relaxing tracks, but the closed are mainly for just all out loud slamming sound for rock and electronic and hip hop. I realized I am not critical of the sound for them, still want it to be really good, but the priority shifts. Thus for those reasons the Sony MDR-Z1R does not work for me.

They are both fine headphones but it depends what is important to you. I think the th900 still has the best bass of any dynamic driver I have heard so far, with tremendous slam and articulation, but many people say they are overly bright and therefore fatiguing. It's a V-shaped headphone so the mids are recessed. I'm a little old-school, I like to hear voices clearly so that's not always my favorite, depending on the music. They have a remarkable and impressively wide sound stage for a semi-closed headphone. So they are phenomenal for genres of music (like dance music) that is bass-centric. I love the "attack" and sound signature of biocellulose drivers and the Fostex has them. There are hints of the Sony R-10 in the attack of the Fostex. It does well with all genres of music. The Z1R is does not have the same power and slam, the bass is not as impressive, but the mids are less recessed and to me the Z1R is not overly bright or tiring. The Z1R has a more laid back sound that is detailed; you can "look" deeper into the individual components of the music on the Z1R. Both image quite well. The th900 is more of an emotional headphone, the Z1R is more focused on technical capabilities, though it is not analytical. Both are very comfortable.

Are these headphone recordings corrected in their volume level to each other? Is the music track on all of them cut in exactly the same length? I have the hearing experience to hear some kind of breathing (of the female singer?) only at the Sony MDR-F1 and at the Beyerdynamic Tesla T1 at the end of the track, especially on the Sony. On the Sony I would have thought you have recorded noise from the outside too, but on the Beyerdynamic...
@bertreviews
5 жыл бұрын
Yes they were corrected, but this was my first sound demo video and I did not correct properly for the HD800. I have since improved the recording process and added several things: I do it in real time now (simultaneous with video recording) and have upgraded to a Zoom H6 digital recorder (you can see this in my last video on the ZMF Eikon) which has excellent pre-amps. Recordings are fully balanced, completely separate left and right channels. Volume levels are further checked in Adobe Audition. I make the recordings in a room that I have soundproofed and at night when there are no household noises, I even turn off all the lights in the house. Thanks for mentioning that sound; I am not sure what that is! It is very very subtle but I caught it now that you mentioned it, on the Sony & Beyer. How interesting...I hope I don't have a ghost! I think for this you need to make shure your getting a proper seal with the headphones as if theres isn't one it can greatly affect the sound , it looks like some of these heaphones dont fully seal all the way around the ear, perhaps makeing a larger disk to place around the ears would be able to solve this
@bertreviews
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment; all the headphones sealed completely around the disks (even the HD-800) when I recorded the audio. The disks are quite large. I recorded the audio separately from the video you are seeing above, where the headphones are "drooping." What you are seeing is not the live audio recording. While recording audio, the headphones require both my hands and some other rigging to keep them at the correct height, and they seal quite nicely around the disks. Problem is I can't do the audio recordings and do Bert at the same time (I only have 2 hands, lol) so that's why I recorded the audio at a separate time. The audio was recorded with headphones 100% fully sealed. Thanks for watching!

Bert Reviews in my experience touching/holding the headphone or indirectly through the rigs during recording can also introduces noises. Looks like the 3Dio has some mounting mechanism at the top, maybe you want to add something for the headband to rest on? Maybe adding a “skull” for Mr Ear?Also what’s the width between the disc? If it’s shorter than 7” some headphones might not naturally seal. Hope you can share your experience on 3Dio as they couldn’t answer my questions on headphone recordings. Thanks!
@bertreviews
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for your comment and suggestion! I have improved the method used to fix the headphones to the 3dio since this video. They are being held up by a fixed mechanism at the top of the headphones, which is not visible on camera. This keeps the headphones solidly in place without me having to touch them, and also allows me to adjust clamping pressure for a proper fit. Before recording I examine very carefully to ensure that visually, I have a good seal. I love the quality of the microphone and in my opinion it does an excellent job of recording lifelike, high quality audio, highly representative in my opinion of the headphones being presented. However I am not a professional audio engineer and I cannot afford very high end acoustic simulators which I have seen priced as high as $20,000 US. But the 3Dio is a $2000 unit and is no slouch. As a professional binaural recorder it has superb microphones placed exactly where the human eardrums would be. I have done my best to have a complete seal and reduce outside noise. This may not adhere to absolute standards but I think it works well for the purposes of these videos. People are also listening through music processed through youtube and then through their own headphones, so that too introduces biases. The only way to hear exactly what the headphones sound like is to actually try them on. Still, I think people will get a pretty good “impression” of what they sound like, which is the best I can do considering the means I have available. I will consider your suggestion and if you have any more, please let me know!

Yeah this was my first video doing this, and I mentioned in several comments about the HD800 being too loud, that was my mistake. I have since fixed that. All headphones in subsequent videos are at equal levels, triple checked. You make mistakes in life, and you learn.
