Good video. I just installed a number of these and I can say with 100% certainty that there is NO NEED for a special installation tool. Some of the dedicated tools actually do an inferior job. A grade 8 bolt, oversized nut and a couple washers combined with a drill or bit driver works perfectly. These things are really soft and I set most with a stainless screw. Just don't over-do it.

I need to work out a way to install a dozen 3/8-16 slotted, pre-bulbed Rivet Nuts for a Humvee application, will give this a shot. Both the FSI D-100-Mil-1 hydraulic tool and the 16" long handled manual tool do not engage enough threads to crush the 3/8-16 slotted, pre-bulbed Rivet Nuts.

Hey nice video, i appreciate the time taken to explain in depth. What rivnuts or cross nuts would you suggest for a car dashboard (pvc material). I need to attach a stereo panel but i need it in a way where if i have to make any future repairs i can unscrew the nuts and take the panel out. Its a diy project so i have to fix the panel on a desired place on a dashboard where i need some good grip to fix it and i find these kind of rivnuts or cross nuts appropriate for the job but i am afraid that when i apply the torque it might crack the dashboard. Any suggestions will be a big favor. Thanks.

Use nutserts. ( rivetnuts ) Get the aluminum ones for plastic attachments, and if you can reach the back, use a steel washer matched size to rivnut. That will sandwich the plastic, rather than stress the area around the hole. Last, be SUPER careful not to over tighten the nutsert. ( as soon as just snug, check it wont spin around. If won't spin, that's enough.) Plastics can be easily cracked if you use a full CRUSH.

I'm a bit confused as to why you used "lock washers" on your "tool" and not "flat washers"?

Ben Blanco The nut captures on the lock washer as you turn the bolt thereby allowing the bolt to tighten without free spinning the entire plus nut assembly.

IMHO, Plusnuts have a larger flange and expansion area that allows it to fail less often than rivnuts. I include a free spinning nut as a failure too.
