The fights were longer than they are today, and because there are so many different sanctioning bodies the titles themselves are watered down, there was only one champion and he had to win the title in the ring, not in court. I saw the Ali era as I was growing up and I haven’t seen anyone come along that was more skilled or trained harder than the fighters of that era, however some would have fit right in in that time.

Dempsey fought in a time before there were many rules even. He broke a man's jaw almost clean off his face because he was down on one knee so not "knocked down" per the rules, so Jack just kept hitting him in the face. There were also no Neutral Corners so if a man went down, the fighter could just sit there and wait for him to start getting back up to hit him again.
