For those who are calling the greatest man who ever lived a coward, he did the manly thing to do. Vietnam War was a piece of shit war that should have never happened. The Vietnamese people never did anything bad to us to begin with. It was just some cockhead US Government who had to nosedive into their business and prevent Vietnam from being a communist country. Ali knew exactly what was going on, and he realized that it was a pointless war that wasn't worth fighting for. I bet other people felt the same way about it at the time. So it's not being a coward if he did the right thing. Plus, this also had to do with how badly white people mistreated black people over the years, so he didn't feel like doing the white man's dirty work.

The purpose of going to Vietnam was pretty much the same as the purpose of my grandfather's grandfather going to Gettysburg and Fort Wagner in the 17th Connecticut Volunteers or my old man enlisting in the Marines in WW2. Because political power comes out of the barrel of a gun and if you let any one political party control all the guns they can and will enslave you as the millions of victims of Communist dictatorships such as the 2 million unarmed victims who were mass murdered in the Killing Fields after we left are proof.

Cause the idiots at the white house believed that if Vietnam turns red, they would become China’s ally in spreading communism across that part of the world. Anyone with basic knowledge of world history would know that such theory is idiotic. China and Vietnam had enemies for a thousand years no way in hell would they bury the hatchet and become allies just because they have the same system of governance. And such theory will be proven to be absolutely false later on since Vietnam and China are still bitter enemies even after the former turned red. Good thing the american people saw right through the farce.

My cousin Al died in Vietnam the month after Ali refused to go. He enlisted. I enlisted on his birthday after I graduated high school. My grandfather's grandfather enlisted in the 17th Connecticut Volunteers during the American Civil War and fought at Gettysburg and Fort Wagner to end slavery. My old man quit high school to enlist in WW2. There was a lot ways to dodge the Draft in America before Nixon ended it. However since as Mao says political power comes out of the barrel of a gun, Colin Powell ended up with a lot more political power than Mohamed Ali and my old man got a kick out of Mohammed Ali being knocked on his ass with a busted jaw by an ex-Marine named Ken Norton who took Ali's title away from him in trial by combat. :)

First of all, thanks to you and your family members for your sacrifice and service to our nation. My Dad served in WWII and was seriously wounded during the Battle of Anzio, receiving both The Purple Heart and The Bronze Star. If I may sir, Ali was not seeking political power in taking the stand he did against serving in the Vietnam War. He had stated many times he was not trying to lead his people - his stand was a personal one that generated extensive news coverage because of who he was. At one point, he said: “if I thought going to war would bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my fellow Black Americans, they wouldn’t have to draft me - I’d join tomorrow.” If Ali’s appeal to the Supreme Court had failed, he willingly would have served five years in jail and paid the $10,000 fine. You may not agree with Ali’s position, but would it hurt to give him the benefit of the doubt? Post boxing, he performed numerous acts of charity and supported dozens of organizations that most people don’t even know about. Good luck to you and be well.

@@Texasjim2007 I get your family was/is very military-oriented and l respect that. Perhaps another quote from Ali may help you understand what I mean: “Whatever the persecution is for standing up for my religious beliefs, even if it means facing machine gun fire that day, I’ll do it before renouncing the Nation of Islam and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I’m ready to die.” Didn’t you and your relatives fight in part so that we’d be free to follow any religion we want? I had the pleasure of meeting Ali in 1993 and talking with him for a while. I can tell you without any reservation that boxing was about 10% of who he was (and he admitted Norton was tough - he couldn’t quite figure him out). He was sincere, compassionate and totally devoted to his religion, which dictated he could not participate in any wars unless called to by Allah or his messenger. Bottom line - this man was willing to go to jail and even die for his religious beliefs - I’d he say was pretty courageous.

For goodness sakes, Ali was not anti-American or anti-Semitic! He won an Olympic Gold Medal for his country and yet was refused service at restaurants in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. His conviction for refusing to join the army was overturned by the US Supreme Court, but if it hadn’t been, he wouldn’t have fled the country, he’d have gone to jail. He said at the time: “so I’ll go to jail - we’ve been in jail for 400 years.” I guess Archie Bunker was right: “There’s a little bit of me in every one of yous.”

He is wrong, read the Quran. It says many times to kill infidels and enslave them. Ali was famous and rich enough to dodge the draft, the average person can’t afford one of the best lawyers in the country and have millions publicly supporting them. Fuck Ali.

I think your mindset is too simplistic to ever truly grasp the courage and respect this man had. May god have mercy on your soul.

Ains Ooal Gown. No kidding. I too just can't make any sense of it. So many USA champions and title holders went to fight and die for USA Israel masters. So did a lot of bankers, politicians and their children. I just don't understand Ali. The more we destroy and kill other countries, the better it is for us and more stuff we will have. I just don't understand why he would not go. kzitem.info/news/bejne/15pvx32XpoqbhH4

What country? We know how the US was in the 60s. How they treated black people with segregation. Why would he fight for that?
