Tula art steel in the collection of the Museum "Collection"
The art of artistic steel, which was mastered by Tula jewelers and gunsmiths, occupies a special place in the history of Russian culture. Located at the crossroads of trade routes and rich in iron ore deposits, Tula has been a key center of domestic metallurgy for more than five centuries. From the video clip you will learn about the history of the founding by Peter I in Tula in 1712 of the country's first "new type ironworks". For example, in the “Description of the Tula Arms Plant” of 1806, “the art with which weapons and many other things are processed at this plant is so excellent that its products, both in purity and beauty, in all parts are not inferior to the products of the best factories in Europe. Foreign travelers admiringly called Tula "Russian Sheffield", thereby comparing it with the region where the most prestigious steel plants of the 19th century worked.
The world-famous Tula blades and guns were a subject of special national pride, but no less important role in the activity of the plant was occupied by “particular” products intended for private use.
It is safe to say that the products of the Tula plant covered all areas of the objective world that surrounded a person in the 18th - 19th centuries, from “steel diamonds” of buttons to unparalleled metal furniture.
The collection of the Museum "Collection" presents the rarest Tula seamstresses of the middle of the 19th century, inextricably linked with the traditions of needlework among noblewomen; boxes and piggy banks.
Products from the Tula art steel were purchased not only by aristocrats, but also by wealthy townspeople and peasants. They were in great demand and were considered not only a handy device for needlework, but also a fashion accessory.
In the video clip "Tula Steel" you can see in detail the items presented at the thematic exhibition "The Order of Things", which recently opened in the Museum "Collection".
