I always do this with sand paper. No issues. finish it off with 600. 🙏🏼

You really can do this by hand the cylinder bores are a precise measurement
@janinomajavie8434

Not really because the honing tool makes the bore nice and round normally after taking out pistons the bore will be oval

It’s possible but it’s way more work. I wouldn’t recommend it.

I had a question, I only want to replace piston rings and valve seals for my Golf 7 GTD 2.0 TDI 2014 (Cuna engine). high oil consumption but car does not smoke, would this be a good solution?
@Motorcarnut

Yes, it would be. Make sure you don’t have any seal leaks anywhere as well.

@@Motorcarnut thank you very much for your answer, I don't need to replace new pistons, only rings if there are no leaks. I don't have to overhaul the head gasket if not necessary.
@Motorcarnut

@Kevin-oz6oq You mean the head not head gasket. Head gasket has to be replaced. And you have to make sure the pistons don’t have excessive wear on the skirts.

Have you checked PCV? What’s the rate of consumption. Possibly piston soak and engine flush to help with oil consumption?

No, this was just a demonstration on how to do it. Crankshaft must be removed unless debris will scratch the journals.

is it possible to remove the pistons without taking out the engine block. on a Volvo s40 and does the tool come with one standard grit on it or is it different for each make and model car👍🏿
@Motorcarnut

Mostly the same grit and it’s possible to remove the pistons in the vehicle but more time consuming as you have to drop the oil pan and all components.
@Bbbbar123

Drop the pan broskie, youd be better off doing that than tryna drop the whole damn engine out imo. Preferably when your oil change is due!

Check out my short I recently posted, it's now a how to video, just me pulling the pistons of a 4.2L Inline 6 engine. Remove the head, if the oil pan is easy to drop, you'll have access to the 2 connecting rod bolts, unscrew those with an extended socket. Then push the piston up with a plastic or wood hammer handle. It's gonna depend on how easy the oil pan is going to come off. Good luck 🤙

I prefer just removing the engine. It ain't that hard and it gives a lot of piece of mind when you have freedom of movement and can see everything calmly and clearly. I like to put my engines in my living room and see what the wife says. 😂

Okay thank you. I’m putting in new piston rings after having to open the motor due to a broken valve. The he intake valve dropped the valve guide broke and little pieces of it caused some really small indents in the piston is that okay to use like that or should I use a new piston in that cylinder I already bought it along with 4 piston ring sets and con rod bearings and come rod bolts and nuts or am I overdoing it? It’s a Kawazaki h2 motorcycle motor
@Motorcarnut

@Redir89 I would replace the piston. If you didn’t get too far I’d still deglaze the cylinders for the new piston rings. I thought you’d already had it together.

@@MotorcarnutI see yes I did it really and put it on new piston, new con rod bearings, new con rod bolts and nuts for that particular piston but I also ordered 3 more sets of piston rings and con rod bolts and nuts and con rod bearings bc I was thinking to take the the whole motor apart. But I was able to do just the one that was bad through the bottom of the motor.

My cub lo boy 185 eats up oil and blows out white smoke. Can i just get away with just installing new piston rings and gasket seals? Its a 1975 IH and everything is original on it. I have been doing maintenance on it each year and i think its about time for a revamp.

@walkingdeadalphaCO

@marcelboucher592 Well, the smoke is actually coming out from where you pour the oil in at where the dipstick is. I was able to get a rubber gasket for the oil plug to stop the leak as well. Put a brand new air filter in and got to put in my new fuel bowl fuel filter and rebuild the carb on it, and it should run like it's brand new.
