Thanks I appreciate that... glad you think so as that's something I've definitely struggled with... I have a bit of a piston swinging arm so trying to relax it & have it strum more freely is very challenging but think it's gradually improving as I become generally more comfortable with the guitar as a whole!

This is great content, keep going, once it clicks it's yours forever, it's well worth the effort, guitar is so rewarding, I hope you get whatever your looking for from playing, you'll have times where you want to quit, if you haven't already that is, in fact there'll be times the frustration will be unbearable and you'll hate it, but don't give up, I'm always hitting hurdles that need to be over come and sadly in the past I've let years go by without touching the instrument which I regret. I've learned the hard way, it's all about consistency, which you seem to have in abundance, so I reckon you'll progress quite rapidly, anyhow that's my take on it. Keep up the great work.
@NewLifeWithGuitar

Thanks so much for the awesome comment! Haha I've been lucky enough to not hit any stage of wanting to quit during these first 6 months... but definitely came across a lotttt of frustrating things that I felt I'd never get the hang of it... yet with daily practice it's amazing what we can do in just a few weeks/months. Many of those seemingly impossible frustrations I had are now either very little problem at all or just minor frustrations that continue to improve... I guess the key to improving is always hitting new hurdles... if we're not hitting new hurdles after finding ways to overcome the previous it's no doubt a sign of settling for the level we're already at! I agree with you entirely... consistency is definitely key. Lot's of ups and downs in the short term but over a longer period of time the entire trend is upwards!

Great job building a really solid foundation! You have a lot more patience than I do 😂. The second I could meet the outline criteria for # fast chord changes, or whatever, to jump to the next level, I was gone every time. I did write down any transitions that were tricky or things I needed more practice with and would find songs and exercises to reinforce them until they felt natural. You’ve come a long way in 4.5 months!! Can’t wait to see where you’re at as you progress through grade 2.

You're doing great! Posture seems a lot better! Although you could try angling neck of the guitar just sliiightly further up and see how it feels. It could make all the difference. Another tip you can try is putting your foot (on the leg that the guitar is resting on) on a little box or something to get it a bit higher up. Or you could cross that leg over the other one (although don't do that for 5-8 hours every day like me. I ended up with drop foot for a few weeks. But sitting like that is usually okay). Just a few tips that I felt helped me. You're doing amazing though! Nice and fluid wrist. Keep it up!
@NewLifeWithGuitar
9 ай бұрын
Thanks mate! Yeah angling it up more definitely helps.. I often forget to consider that... I find the most comfortable way for me to play at the moment is when I'm sitting on the floor sort of cross legged or similar & I think that's partly to do with the fact it naturally angles the neck upwards a little more than when on a chair. I often lean my heel up against the leg of the chair when sitting on one to play as that raises my knee which in turn angles the neck upwards a little more... but you're right, a box or something would do a much better job for me. Feels like an old man move but will help for sure... maybe I can use some cool looking treasure chest or something 😂

It might be in review in youtube Studio because I linked some videos that could help with the posture. To make a long story short: do what you feel is comfortable, and try looking up how classical guitarists hold the guitar. Pentatonic can be a bit of a jump (not a bad thing, but following along on the journey, doesn’t seem inline with learning style)… or scales in general… my personal opinion.. start with basic music, in particular, chord theory and intervals and keys etc - music theory for guitarists. Without that knowledge, pentatonic scales are a bit of an abstract concept. I did go straight to pentatonics (I learned level 1 theory for guitarists first-out of three levels with 3rd being advanced, so I knew about intervals, chord composition, etc)… anyways, I started taking applied music theory lessons in person every other week, where we just focus on applied theory, and my instructor had me go back and do something I’m incredibly grateful for today - focus on intervals then triads on the fretboard. Specifically, learning all the notes on the strings 4-6, then learning where the major or minor third was in relation to any root note on one of those strings, then he had me learn where the fifth was in relation to any root note, etc. It allowed me to see the fretboard in both intervals and notes, which unlocked every scale - I just have to see the scale formula to instantly play a new scale now. Learning the intervals/triads built a really strong foundation, and I think it would work really well with the way Shawn works to build thorough foundation. Triads/intervals are the key that unlocked the whole fretboard IMO, without it being overwhelming. It’s the 3 most definitive notes in every chord, and provides an outline for every scale. Even if you only learn intervals with the root on the 6th string to start, it will unlock a lot. Not to mention, just playing through a key in triads, you can see the pentatonic shape. There’s so much you can do if you understand triads and can see them on the fretboard. I just searched and Justin actually has some great easy to follow videos on triads. Anyways perhaps a matter of preference. Nothing wrong with skipping ahead and learning the first minor pentatonic shape, just to have some fun… I think Justin actually does that in grade 2 perhaps? I recall Em pentatonic somewhere in there. I think he might actually start referring to triads even in grade 1 of his course. Can’t remember for certain though.

You're getting so much better! I never realized that "Beat It"(your slower version) has pretty much the same chords and sounds like "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues. Jazz... is right. Pentatonic scales are relatively easy once you learn the shapes, and they will open up the guitar to stuff you didn't know existed. Keep up the good work. It's fun.

I will keep at it for sure! I've dipped into the beginnings of music theory but very little so far... I know it's something that would 100% be worthwhile for me. I don't currently have a strong desire to learn music theory (but suspect this will change at some point) and at the moment I'm really just enjoying getting the basic fundamentals down - I don't have a great deal of free time & have so far dedicated the time I do have to getting the guitar in hand & practicing - but hopefully my desire to get further stuck into music theory will soon prevail & I'll be able to find a quality balance.
