That's awesome, Ste...! I remember those first few days vividly... are you learning on an acoustic? Give it a month or so & your fingers will be able to handle much more practice without feeling mega sore. Persistence is king, sounding really good on those G chords! Make sure when you play the D you don't play the low E (some people also don't play the low A) as it's not in the chord and it can muddy the sound.

Thanks Terence! You're right for sure... persistence is definitely the key, I agree! Yes I could do with some tightening up when it comes to ensuring the right strings are played for the chord.. will keep an eye on that! Ah thanks so much that's really kind of you to say! I don't think there can be any harm in taking a little break like you have done from time to time... I am sure following a little time away you'll re-catch the bug and will pick it up again - that time away could even help you kick on & begin seeing new improvements again! I hear once you reach a certain level of proficiency it becomes more & more difficult to see the progress & only appears obvious later on in hindsight... keep in touch & I hope you begin playing again when the time feels right!

Hey thanks a lot! Hope you're keeping well! Yeah I hear ya... it can be difficult learning new songs & getting them to stick! I think for me it's basically just a simple case of playing them over & over & over... eventually they become easier & easier to remember... I also find it's a good idea to just learn a song in parts at a time... so for example, just playing the first chord progression to the song many times every single day for a few days & then adding the next bit... & just letting it build up.. that seems to help me memorise new things!

You’re progressing well, just be patient and persistent. Me personally, I took up the electric guitar as an older beginner back in February 2016 (I was 47 at the time), and by finding some good teachers on KZitem I’ve learned to play around 120 songs (mostly AC/DC songs and some Aussie pub rock). The guitar is a difficult instrument to master, but also very satisfying and fun to play.

Thanks a lot Paul... that's great to hear that you have recently started learning yourself as well! I think the first few months are incredibly difficult but once there's a little grasp on the very basics I've found it only becomes more & more enjoyable... & then the learning/improvement speeds up for a time before settling down again. That little bit you're doing each day definitely goes a long way even though it's not always obvious at first!

Good to see another video, Shawn! Just yesterday I was thinking "hey, I haven't seen a New Life With Guitar" video on my feed lately. You're doing great buddy. These online courses seem to be doing the job. However, as a long-time player myself, I feel I have to be honest with you: you are already good enough that you could just start learning songs if you wanted, you have the fundamentals down. But stick with the lessons! There's no such thing as too many guitar lessons. :)

Thanks Steve I appreciate that! To be fair I have learned quite a few songs from the earlier lessons... I've just practiced less songs during the last couple of months & have instead used my free time to focus more on getting my strumming to feel a tad more less robotic.. it feels a little more natural than it did so think it has paid off... but I agree now it should be time I take a look at (slightly more) difficult songs!

Alright man. I'm on board for your journey. I think you're getting on nicely indeed. Practising the Emin/Gmaj pentatonic scale will bring you wonderful things. Find a free backing track on KZitem in either of those keys and have fun trying to put melodies together by experimenting with the note order and timing and stuff. The main thing is that you're dedicated. So, I think success is guaranteed in your case, assuming you keep going (which you should. You'd be the first guitar legend who ever documented his whole journey)

Hey I’m at my 6 month mark myself with JustinGuitar. You’re doing great and it’s a pleasure to get to follow along with another fellow guitar player. Some advice since I’m a bit further (by design) play songs man. Your strumming isn’t as bad as you think, it’s actually pretty good, but play songs it will get your timing, strumming, chord changes, everything so much better. Using the app has progressed me tremendously. When Justin says learn songs and it is the most important thing he isn’t lying. The F-Chord and power chords are very tough and take months and months to develop consistently and be able to change to them. Doing the enter sandman riff is going to take a lot of stretching, so just know those are going to be extremely tough for a while, but with everything, technique and consistency is the move. Please continue uploading, it’s awesome being able to track your own progress with someone at the same point, learning the same way. Cheers!

Hey Josh that's awesome... good going - nice to hear from someone else who's been at it for around 6 months! I do play songs... a lot of songs! Many of my earlier videos are me just solely playing through songs.. I just chose to spend the last two months spending less time playing songs in my practice & more time focusing on getting my strumming to feel as natural as possible (alongside the other general practice stuff).. I think that focus has paid off as strumming feels way less robotic to me now than it did back in November/December.. I can feel a big difference now to then.. but I agree that it's important to get back to spending more time playing/learning songs with the chords now! I can see after these first few days with this F chord that it's basically going to be a year-long project on this chord alone haha! Taking my time though & loving it all... hope you're having a blast with your learning as well - sounds like you must be picking things up nicely!

I would suggest during chord changes to strum open while your changing your hand even while using anchor fingers as well as a fellow beginner it’s helped me a lot to strum that one extra note while the change is happening instead of trying to skip it but that’s just me anyone can tell me if I’m wrong or not it’s only something I’ve found to be easier for me personally also it kind of looked like you were doing that so don’t mind me if you were 😂

It's funny you say that because it took me ages to feel somewhat comfortable adding open strums between chord changes.. I found it so awkward to do... but now find that I just naturally do it sometimes without even realising... as soon as I'm conscious of it though I tend to end up messing up even more than when I don't pay any attention at all haha! It's a great tip though because once it is comfortable to do it definitely helps things flow & sound more smooth during songs etc...!
