The thumbnail of this video is the issue. I watched the whole video and appreciated the perspective but I think having a "before and after" type thumbnail when discussing fasting contradicts everything you said in the video about this being an internal journey. The message of the thumbnail implies you are doing this for aesthetic body changes and plays into toxic diet culture. I hope you change it to one of the beautiful and zen looking images of the retreat itself not just your body

The tricky thing about places like this is that its all based on real science, but just slightly pushed beyond the purview of those studies. Fasting, Sauna, Cold bath, nutrient dense drinks, etc. are all proven to be beneficial within certain circumstances and margins, but as with all things blowing them up or pushing them closer to extremes doesnt make them better. Moderation of exposure and extent are what gives access to their benefits while avoiding their harms. Phrases like 'lay on your side to go into your liver', 'parasite-sapper', 'drawing out toxins' are all red flags of taking these concepts beyond moderation and into a potentially harmful place. I agree with people that express concern of particularly vulnerable people getting the wrong impression of a retreat such as this. Side note, REGULAR enemas are proven to be very bad, and demolish the normal flora of the colon far more then they detoxify anything, normal flora is a critical component in homeostasis and is an intense area of study for Crohn's research.

Hey guys! Firstly, I’ve been a huge fan of the channel for many years! I started watching you before Lenny was born and I think I’ve watched almost every video since. Parasocial relationships are a bit weird when you think critically about it, but I do see you like my friends, and as someone who cares about you guys I feel compelled to comment (but again, what does one comment mean in the grand scheme of things?). I just don’t think it’s good for a sailing channel which focuses a lot on science and you even have super cool animations to explain things and then have a video about something that at best isn’t proven to give you any benefits in the long term and at worst can seriously harm people. Also, if you are promoting AG1 constantly then you shouldn’t need to do a “detox”, it just doesn’t make sense. Additionally, please don’t say that “drinking clay” detoxifies the body when it’s literally your liver’s job to do that. If you needed “detoxing”, you’d be in liver failure and you’d be hospitalized. Same with kidneys, if they fail you’re getting admitted to hospital. If this was done for spiritual reasons, so be it, but don’t mask it as anything else. As many have commented, running an electrical current to “zap bugs”? It’s honestly mind boggling. Finally, because I think I’ve gotten my point across, daily enemas? For what? To speed up a process your body naturally does which is to get ride of undigested food after it absorbed all the nutrients it needs? I think I’ve said enough. Again, like I said in the beginning, you’re like friends to me, you inspired me to sign up for sailing lessons last summer, your videos always make me excited to see where you’re sailing and seeing the beautiful scenery and beaches you get to enjoy, but this isn’t it. It now seems as though your channel has increasingly become a platform for health hacks (Better Help, AG 1, high-end detox centers, your personal exercise routines, etc., etc) and much less about sailing. We're all well aware that things and perspectives change in life, but the channel has veered way off course of late and would do well to get back to sailing and away from all the glam content. While my comments may appear negative, that is not my intention. Rather, I wanted to share the opinion of someone who has watched you for years as your sailing skills grew along with your handsome family, but those same qualities that ran through your videos consistently, week after week have not been there for quite some time. I had read an article which explained that many clinical trials are still only tested on men, notably because of the different hormone phases due to menstrual cycles (yes, still in 2024... 🙄) and that there are very few tests on fasting for women and that there are very few tests on fasting in women and that the tests done on women concluded that it wasn't at all adequate with our different phases of menstrual cycles and our hormone levels... it might be necessary to dig deeper to really know if this doctor's research was really done on women. Hi from France 👋
@juless9277

I have been searching for a comment talking about gender bias in the research! What you shared aligns with my understanding as well. The research behind fasting has mostly been done on men because the male hormone cycle is 24 hours whereas female hormone cycles are, on average, 28 days, thus creating too many variables. I am waiting for more conclusive evidence to support fasting for women, and my guess is that it might be indicated for certain phases of the cycle and contraindicated in other phases.

I know nothing about fasting and even less about detoxing. It’s just not something I’m personally in to. But I don’t feel hurt that it’s something Elayna is genuinely interested in. Live and let live. Elayna and Riley are smart people and they knew this video would cause some controversy. In anticipation of the criticism they did a disclaimer in the intro and used Riley to get ahead of the criticism and point out that this all might be junk science - in a clever whimsical way (my favorite part of the video!). Although I doubt Riley is much into all this, I would bet that he would be the first to say: criticism be damned and let’s make the video. Of course a little controversy can be a good thing that drives views and comments. There will be plenty of strictly sailing videos to come. And if on occasion they do something outside that box - you can simply skip that video. I doubt it was intended as a personal affront. A little leeway to allow them to be something other than one dimensional may contribute to the longevity of the channel.

Riley is wild. Thanks for committing to the bit. I've been intermittent fasting for a while now. I haven't really lost much weight or anything in the process - which is to be expected since I haven't lowed my overall calorie intake - but eating in such a relatively small window of the day has actively resolved some chronic issues I used to have like heartburn. It also really helped balance my blood sugar levels so I far less often get tired during the day. I think I'd like to, at some point, try some more extensive fasting now that I'm aware of how I can handle it. Maybe not a week though...

@@davidfrisken1617 Psychological and spiritual perspectives are two different ways of understanding and approaching human experiences and behaviors. Psychological perspective: Focuses on understanding the mind and behavior using scientific methods and theories. Emphasizes the role of factors such as genetics, brain chemistry, and past experiences in shaping behavior and emotions. Seeks to diagnose and treat mental health disorders using therapeutic interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or medication. Aims to improve mental well-being and functioning through techniques and strategies grounded in evidence-based research. Spiritual perspective: Focuses on understanding the soul or spirit and its connection to a higher power or universal consciousness. Emphasizes the importance of faith, belief, and spiritual practices in guiding behavior and providing meaning and purpose in life. Seeks to cultivate a sense of inner peace, harmony, and connection with something greater than oneself. Aims to promote spiritual growth and enlightenment through practices such as meditation, prayer, and mindfulness. Ultimately, while psychology focuses on the mind and behavior from a scientific perspective, spirituality delves into the realm of the soul and seeks to connect individuals with something beyond the physical world. Losing weight is all diet. Exercise while dieting is ideal but will also make you much more hungry. Exercise will help you retain muscle during a diet and can actually make you think you aren’t losing weight because you’re building muscle at the same time. People get discouraged when they workout and diet and don’t “see results” on a scale. Personally I did a 10 month taco diet where I was only eating about 1000-1200 calories a day. I lost 50 pounds in that time and reversed my slow weight gain over a 10 year period. To lose 10 years of weight gain in the shortest amount of time possible was my goal and I did it in less than a year. I felt so much better during and after since. It also made me excited about food again and things taste so much better now. I eat cleaner, don’t need to eat as much, can skip a meal and not feel terrible. Life is just better now. I sleep better, my body doesn’t have inflammation everywhere like it did when I was overweight. I think most people would find that a better diet would help them. I’ve naturally fasted my entire life because I don’t eat breakfast. I’m never hungry in the morning. So that helps me but everyone is different.
