Main thing is that you're OK. Credit to you for having the courage to post this video and I think your post-crash analysis was pretty much correct. I'm not sure how insurance and accident damage is done in Germany but it might be good to see a video of this too if it is possible. By the way, I have toured Germany twice a year since 2010 but I have only covered the northern half of the country and I love Germany, I was hoping to start touring the south this year but I will have to be patient due to Covid and travel restrictions.

Thank you for sharing. Back in 1978 when I got my motorcycle license the instructor told us to keep a margin for error, gravel, water, dogs, deer and others. Now, more than 100.000 km later, I still haven't had an accident - except for a puncture.

Nice Video as usual. I think you are very brave to show your crash and ask for an opinion from the Internet. The KTM crashes well with the various protection you have added although you will probably be finding more things as time goes on. Shame about the Akrapovic. On your ananlysis of the crash, it seems like good reasoning. One thing I note is that you push the bike under like an off road rider, rather than lean into the corner as a track rider would do, which means the bike is leaned over more than would otherwise be the case. it is a long shot but perhaps this would alter the outcome. All videos of myself on track seem slow, so the fact yours look quick and interesting probably mean that you travel rather faster into corners than I do! Glad you were not injured and able to ride out. All's well that ends well!

thank you for nice comment. I hope this lesson learned can help others - if it prevents just a single crash from someone else it would be all worth it. BUT the crash really got me by suprise. ;-)

I think you lost your front wheel, not the rear. The bars twitched to the left as the front tyre let go and you went down. Perhaps a bit late in the corner to be braking. The back end didn't come round until the front wheel left the edge of the road with the bike already on its side.
@MotoVibes
4 жыл бұрын
@wdescoteaux
4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your excellent video! It looks like you were carrying good speed entering the corner. Your entry could have been more to the right and deeper into the curve to set up your exit of the turn. Because your trail braking was a little late and your line was now tighter when you tilted to turn left past the apex and on the steep grade of the surface, your rear tire lost its traction... down you went. If you enter into corners a little wider and deeper, you have more braking options without losing traction. Also, you see the apex and exit more clearly. A tighter entry line does not allow much room for line options or braking adjustments. Hopefully, you can picture what I wrote!

I try to avoid braking into the turn on the road. I feel there's a little more margin for error if braking finishes before leaning the bike over. Once I get to full lean, I usually apply a little gas to maintain speed. I then try to feed in the power progressively as the bike returns upright once past the apex. Of course it doesn't always happen this way...
@MotoVibes
5 жыл бұрын
this is definitly the way how it is taught in driving school and the safer approach I was definitly faster than I should have been. However, "trailing the brake" does give you some advantages while cornering if done at with moderate braking power for street riding. Not for the speed so much (as it does on the track) but for the quicker reaction time to fully apply the brakes if something unexpected happens while cornering.
@andreachinaglia5804
4 жыл бұрын
@@MotoVibes I would say that if something unexpected happens in that moment the last thing you have to do is to fully apply the brakes, as you will loose the front wheel and low side. What you can do is to slightly and very progressively apply more brake and that reduces both your speed and the turning radius at the same time giving you more options to chose a trajectory that avoid the obstacle, stop, or eventually hit the obstacle with less energy involved. I agree with you about trail braking being beneficial if something happens, but not much because your reaction time is faster, mainly because during trail braking the weight is already on the front wheel and you don't upset the bike braking more, while without trail braking you transfer the weight to the front wheel from a more neutral distribution upsetting the bike and so reducing traction. anyway imho (i am quite a beginner rider, and far from being an expert) the main reason for what happened to you is too much speed, slow or fast turns it is safe to push hard in the track, on the road too many things can happen, the split moment of distraction you had, but also some graver or oil on the tarmac, a not expected obstacle or whatever. you lost the rear wheel and you was lucky as that is a condition that sometimes turns in a high side, and you can imagine by yourself the consequences in that particular turn, you rolling down that slope with your heavy bike chasing you. i am very glad to know that you had no injury and the bike only minor damage. i wish you all the best, ride safe.

To me it looks like: 1. You came into this corner to fast... around 60kph from what possible to see from your dash. During crash dash shows 47kph. 2. You were on constant throttle on turn and maybe it would have gone good, but I gues you stopped constant acceleration and started to slow down. Wheight transfered onto front, balance moved from back to front and simply it was to fast for this angle, this corner. 3. Maybe you realy pressed the brake, and as it was to fast, you lost tracktion. Happy for you, that you are ok! Great job!

Hello there, glud you OK, in my opinion it's cold tyres, I did a test on the bike last week and tyres take a long time or never to warmup! If you like, you can watch the test video. I think you are right that you were still braking late as you can see the handlebars jerk left right as it starts to slide. Rear wheel got too light and with that speed and angle, lost grip. As soon as it slid out a tiny bit, you were still releasing the brake and that's why the bars went left suddenly. Minimal damage to both of you! That's great. Thanks for the share!

@MotoVibes

The airbag vest did not do much in this particular scenario. As I was leaning into inside of the turn I did not have far to fall. I did not hit with any of the body parts that the vest protects - also due to sliding with the bike the airbag did not release until I separated from the motorcycle at the side of the road. Had I gone done with the bike the vest would provided good protection. My level 2 armor (which I had upgrade right before the trip) did most of the protection in the elbow, shoulder and knee area - also my heavy duty adventure boots protected my feet really well - there was no road rash but the textil clothing got damaged from sliding over the pavement - I hope this helps ;-)

I looked at your video. First, I’m glad everything went well. I think your analysis is correct, but I think one detail needs to be added nonetheless. If you take a closer look at the bend in the footage just before entering the bend, you will notice that the color of the asphalt starts to change exactly where the wheel slipped. At the same time, that part of the bend there is an exit from the "yard" of the house that is on the bend. Every time you go out, a little dust is brought to the asphalt. In this particular case, the limit coefficient of friction on clean asphalt was not good even on dirty. I am convinced that if it was a completely normal bend without a "house" on which there is no way out of the dirty terrain, the bend would pass without a fall. I think this factor should be taken into account :-)

Good thing you ended up fine. Very educational. Based on my similar experience (crash on similar downhill hairpin on BMW R1150R, and that bike is very stable and forgiving to braking in corners due to telelever ) change of geometry while braking did not bring you down. Speed and angle of lean brought you down. When you lost the traction on rear you were doing 44km/h. That was way too fast for that corner. Actually you made mistake on a corner before entering it at around 80km/h. There was not enough lenght of road to reduce speed to safe 30km/h. If lean was not as drastic tyre would regrip, it would shake you a bit but it is likely that you'd recover. In your case tyre was lifted of the ground as minor slip caused frame to pick the tarmac. I've learned my lesson hard way too however with lot less damage to the bike. My rule of thum is: Downhill hairpins on a narrow road seem to be safe (on a public road) up until 30km/h. 40 is risky, 50 plain dangerous. I often wonder why people rush on Stelvio pass. Not that they are riding it every day. Makes more sense to go slow and enjoy the scenery. In your case you also had empty road and that is luxury on Stelvio so one more reason to slow down and enjoy scenery ! 😃
@MotoVibes

I am definitely more careful on the downhill section now too ;-)
@beartrader_redartraeb

Disagree regarding the speed recommendations. Your speed limit in bends incl. hairpins depends on road conditions and riding skills. Without proper riding skills people fail to get in an "elegant, smooth, and safe way" through hairpins. To my opinion the Spluga pass (Italian side) is more challenging than Stelvio - and more fun. With a proper riding technique, uphill as well as downhill. Give it a try when you're in that area again (border b/t Italy and Switzerland). Happy riding - particularly mastering hairpins!
@BobThePilotN4WFH

Tights corners leave no times for feeling the limit. Considering all the other variables, cold tires, road temperature brake application, lean angle. It will happen to all riders that push the limit of any bike. Many aspects were in your favor, you didn't follow the bike down the embankment, the embankment wasn't that steep or far down to the bottom and you cud ride out. Thanks for sharing.

The answer is in 0:02 of your intro. You take your butt of the seat and that's ok but you keep your head on the bike. The head weights 5 kg and gives better leverage. Lean angle was way more your bike and tires could handle. When riding an on off tourer limits come sooner than a street or a supersport bike. You said that you probably trailed the brakes longer into the turn past the apex. Doing so would sweep the front, not your case. Glad to see you weren't hurt and your bike sustained almost minor damages, equipment did a fine job protecting you and the bike. Its nice to see people taking their safety seriously

The vest deployed but I am not sure if it was fully filled with air yet - it should have been. This part is hard to remember ;-) some of the impact into the bike while sliding was to my lower body (not seen in the video) - I also moved my hands and arms up to push the bike away from me. The chest protection is one of the great benefits of having an airbag vest - most road riding gear has zero chest protection.

Ya man you were rippin around that switchback pretty hard. I have learned very quickly that with this bike since the seating position is so high it does give the rider a false sense of security. The bike handles so well that it is relatively easy to push it over the limits, especially since you really dont feel like you are going that fast even though you are. I know this because I have ridden the exact same roads on my CBR929 and felt like I could go faster on just about every part of the road on the KTM SAS... I am definitely going to invest in some very grippy road tires for the KTM SAS! After ridiin this weekend in the mtns with my wife I inspected both tires and did notice the rear it appeared that on some sections of the tire I did slip but then caught traction again....Love my bike though!

Ride Safe 😉

Straight up, tires can brake or throttle up at 100%. Add lean angle and you have to subtract that from how much braking or throttle you have left. You can take a turn three ways: 1. lean the bike under you, 2. lean inline with the bike, or 3. you lean more than the bike. As you progress 1->3 you can carry more speed through a turn or maintain a higher margin of safety. Back the the first thing, since you’re more upright, you have more left in the tires to brake later or start to accelerate earlier. TL;DR. the bike was too leaned over for your speed (Couldn’t tell if you were on the brakes right before the slide, but didn’t sound like you opened the throttle. Looks like too much was being asked of the front tire. )

Thank you for your analysis - I think rear to front weight distribution of the bike had quite a bit to do with the low sider - braking hard going downhill did not help.

What did that feel like when your air vest deployed? Or did you even notice it? Eric

Oh - you definitly notice. You hear and feel when CO2 fills the airbag. It is actually really tight (which is what you want to stabilize your torso) - but it was hard to breathe especially with all the adrenaline after the crash - that is why I had to take it off right way.

You're still alive, that's the main thing. However, I noticed myself on the Galibier to be distracted just a little bit by a photographer, where all the attention was necessary for the speed, the angle and the corner. Your speed seems tot be a little bit high for the road too. Your bike has got a high point of gravity, as all adventures have. So if its runs nil, any correction will turn out to be futile. Good quality of the video.
