Hi. My friend and I are planning to start recording podcasts together, but we can't agree on whether the quality difference between expensive and affordable microphones is really necessary. I suggest buying at least an MV7 or an SM7B, while my friend prefers microphones in the Podmic price range. Do you think the difference between these two microphones would be noticeable for listeners? Do you think we should go all out and choose established, high-end products, or would more budget-friendly microphones suffice? Thank you for your recommendations.

Great setup, Tom. :) Been curious what you’re using these days. Was looking into acoustic panels as well. What was the thought process behind having them on the closets and above but not on that back wall?
@tombuck
3 жыл бұрын
I put the one on the closet since that's where my voice bounces off of the most while I'm recording. I originally had the blue one there, but then it was casting a blue tint on everything, so I got the white one to act as a light reflector. I put the blue on on the ceiling since it seems like sound was bouncing off of the walls and hitting the ceiling. My biggest issue now is actually the drumset. Since the drums are hollow, my voice gets in there and reverberates, but there's probably not really much I can do about that.
@MelvinVarghesePhD
3 жыл бұрын
@@tombuck Hey Tom! Thanks for taking the time to explain. So helpful. Bummer that you couldn't get the "Tom Blue" in front of you but glad you figured out how to tweak it =). Hmm...the drums are an interesting dilemma. I'm assuming you've done the usual things (e.g., placing the shotgun mic above and over you + close as possible vs. pointing toward drums to take advantage of proximity effect, etc). I remember Caleb from DSLR Shooter mentioning these guys in one of his videos (I think the small office multi-cam one): www.gikacoustics.com/ . I was actually looking at getting some stuff from there for my home office (mainly do podcasts but considering more KZitem videos). I noticed they do a free consult. It looks like they work with quite a few musicians so might be worth a shot as I know you love your drums (and they look sweet on camera!).

There are quite a few mic options in that price range. I don't know your needs, but for XLR mics I love the Shure MV7X and Rode PodMic.

Do you use a MacBook pro when live streaming?
@tombuck
3 жыл бұрын
I use the base model M1 Mac Mini. I ended up selling my 16" MacBook after getting the Mini because I never used it any more and the Mini handles everything so well.

The M1’s are. The 16” was too, but the fans were really loud, so I used to put it under the desk and use an external monitor.

Why do you need ATEM Extreme? BTW have you tried Logitech MX3? I had been using Mighty/Magic Mouse for years but I switched to MX3 in 2020 and never looked back.

For me, I like the Extreme for live streams when I sometimes bring in A LOT of different HDMI sources (cameras, computers, etc). It was also incredibly helpful when I was teaching online during the pandemic and wanted to make my classes as dynamic as possible. Total life saver! Everyone loves the MX3 mouse (including my wife). I might need to give it a fair shot one day...
