My 13 year old dog has been scratching non-stop for about 10 years. He chews his feet until the fur turns red, and chews his groin. He has LOTS of food allergies diagnosed, as well as storage mites. He's off dry food, avoids all allergens, and takes Apoquel as well as Revolution. It made no difference.

Agree that flea treatment is a must for dogs and cats !! But the prescription meds are extremely overpriced so the companies can make huge profits off the consumers ! The cost may not impact some if they just have one pet. But $30 plus a pop for one month treatment will break a bank!!! I have multiple animals and that cost alone would put me and my animals out on the streets!Sadly, the better over the counter drops aren't much cheaper. This medicine costs pennies to make. These companies are holding us hostage!

I totally agree with you, I once took my dog and I was told she had gastric problems, was given 2 pills and charged over £6.00 for them not including the vets appointment charge. When I got home I realised they were exactly the same pills I’m on for acid reflux, prescription for a months worth of pills, at the time was around £5-7ish a month 🤯🤬 when I went back for the check up, I asked the vet about the pills and he agreed that they are the same medication 🤯 that’s definitely ripping people off. Then if you can’t afford their thieving ways you can have your animal taken away for neglect, either they fix the problem or just put it down 😢 because here in the UK the vets don’t do monthly payments either, so not very helpful are they, those animals taken away from its family for no reason of its own, put in a stressful environment so that hopefully someone else can come along and pay to take it home, I’m obviously not talking about abused animals ❤

I’m was under the impression none of the blood tests for food allergens were actually reliable, and even the ones for environmental allergens aren’t that reliable unless paired with intra-dermal testing. Elimination diets are the only proper way to diagnose a food allergy.

I have a very allergic Pug. We have him on a vet created allergy serum, we wipe him off after every walk. He does have to go out 5 to 7 times a day, in Florida it is very hot, he drinks a lot of water from April through December, when it is summer temps. The serum helps a lot, he is also on Apoquel when even the allergy serum is not enough. I highly recommend that if nothing helps OTC and you can’t control the scratching and licking, find an animal dermatologist, they are hard to find and very busy but your pet will thank you if you can get him or her skin tests, just like humans, and get the dog or cat started in better relief. If OTC stuff worked, I would be about 2500 richer. Pugs are notorious for having allergies, breathing issues, lots of deadly green gasses, but you won’t find a better dog.

Dr Scott, are you familiar with allergen immune serum? Our older dog was diagnosed with both food and enviornmenal allergies. Blood work indicated he was allergic to many things (grass, trees, cats, dust mites, snow mold etc). He was on daily allergy meds year round. Before the meds, he would get sores on his belly, itchy feet, yeast infection between his toes, ear infections etc. I asked if there was any way we could get him off or reduce his meds. Our vet recommended we try the allergen serum. The dermatologist prepared the serum using allergens that he was most allergic to. We started off with an extremely small dose (1 drop) daily for 3 weeks. As he was ok, we slowly worked up to 3 drops/day over a period of 6 months. At one point we had moved to 3 drops and he had a bit of reaction so we had to go back to 2 drops/day for a few weeks. He is now at the max 3 drops daily and has been on this for 1 1/2 years. We have been able to successfully reduce his meds. In the winter, he has his meds every other day (even when we have a brief snow melt and there is snow mold) and during spring, summer and fall he takes his meds 2 days on and 1 day off. If he does well for the next few months, we'll try reducing his meds a bit more. I'm just wondering if this is just something our dermatologist is doing or if it is more widely used. We also wipe him and our other dog down when they come in from outside.

My dog is constantly licking her legs, feet and belly. No tummy or poo problems. Unfortunately I am currently paying off surgery for 1 dog and monthly shots and care for a 16 year old shorkie so have not been able to afford diagnosis yet. Hopefully soon.

How do you find out what a cat is reacting to, by liking all the fur off her abdomen? The vet said it was an allergy but had no way to tell me to what.

Not a vet, but I've had experience with allergies in animals. It's mainly trial and error. Look up the most common, then take it out of diet for a few weeks. If the symptoms disappear then thats likely the allergen. A faster option would change over to a hyperallergenic food. If the symptoms clear up, the problem solved

@@sammansfield21Thanks for your reply. The problem with hypoallergenic foods is they all contain chicken==the one thing I know she can't have. I was hoping there might be a blood test or skin patch test for other things like mold, pollen, other foods, etc.

Good tips and advice as always from you 👍Short question, my girl licks her private parts a lot, started after sterilization almost 6 months ago, our vet doesn't think it's anything to worry about...but I'd like to understand this the behavior and if there is anything I can do? She is general a little nervous. Any advice? Thank you.

If anyone can help me I need some advice, my chihuahua has to have dental surgery because of a wobbly tooth but the vet reckons she has a heart murmor which I'm not sure about because she gets very nervous when she goes to the vet anyway, the vet wants to scan her heart first and I was just wondering if anyone has an idea of how much the scan will cost ? Any help appreciated, thank you. X

For us it was going to be $1200 but it could be less depending on what type of tests. You have to call and ask what they want to do and the prices.
