Hi Ali, long fan of yours. Ever since the Nvidia Ampere presentation of the 3080 and 3090 I knew you would try them in a custom liquid cooled loop in the FormD T1 and in the Ncase M1. My impressions at the time, even before seeing them confirmed by your videos, were that the FormD T1 could have been a good candidate for the FE 3080 to be almost viable in air-cooled configuration, thanks to the possibility to have the extra 1 slot space at the exhaust due to the possibility offered by the case to have a 3 slot GPU compartment. Still I though that the 320W were too much to truly be comfortably viable, but the actual results were a little bit better than I expected. Now onto this video, even before watching this, I thought that both the 3090 and 3080 would have been too power hungry for the FormD T1 with their super high TDP for a single radiator that has to cool a 120W CPU as well. I imagine that the performance in the Ncase M1 will be probably adequate with your dual radiator set-up that you used for your OC 10900K and 2080TI (with a combined wattage at just under 500W if I remember correctly). Making a quick calculation an undervolted 3090 at 335W + the stock 5950X at120W totals to about 455W under a sustained load witch puts in a comparable power envelope to your previous system! By the way, your work and this channel is a huge inspiration for me, as you really create some exceptional videos, with truly mesmerizing cinematography skills and the quality of information is also very high!

Hey, I've been having the same performance issues with my Crosshair VIII Formula and my 5950X, thanks for the sanity check. I've played around the BIOS and found a few settings tweaks greatly improved performance, both single and multi-core. So far, going in and simply setting a -0.0875V offset has increased my effective all core boost up to 3.8GHz, up from the 3.6GHz I had when everything was "Asus stock settings." My processor also kept boosting up to 4.9G8Hz or on a single thread when using CBR20 (615pts, much higher than the stock 589 I was getting). Temps went also down considerably when a single thread was being used (was getting upwards of 70°C when stock on a dual 360 radiator open loop with a similar DDC pump, down to 60°C-ish). Explicitly disabling PBO max enhancer also improved the accuracy of reported clock speeds (it reported 4.4GHz all core when enabled, which was obviously wrong as was visible on HWinfo64). Enabling PBO expectedly increased multi-core thermals (50°C on average without PBO vs 79°C with PBO in CBR20), as the current limits went off the roof (215W reported vs 120W without PBO), but the all core boost clocks went over 4.3GHz and the single core boost kept hovering around 4.9GHz. All in all, the max VCore I observed stock was 1.5V on single core workloads, which went down to 1.413V max with my undervolt. PBO raised the average 1V all core workload to 1.25V with a 500MHz or so boost to all core frequency. I think this is the result of an incredibly inefficient BIOS on the 'older' X570 boards which blasts current and voltage to extremely inefficient levels on lightly threaded workloads while throttling the voltage down hard to remain in the 120W official PPT limit. I'm equally disappointed that performance is so comparatively poor relative to other motherboards as Strix and Crosshair motherboards represent the higher end of Asus motherboards and one would expect they'd be paying closer attention to those to make sure performance stays top notch. Hopefully a BIOS update in the future will fix this. Thanks for the video. It motivated me to look for more intricate solutions than I usually would. I hope this helps in the off-chance you read this, as that build looked very cool. I may or may not do a follow-up to this with after playing around more with PBO settings if anyone's interested.

I also kept the fan speed at full speed on the rad at all times. Another issue you need to resolve is have another fanned exhaust in the case to get eid of the residual heatbfeom other components

I was having the same kind of issue with my 5900x and my x570 tomahawk where it would not boost up even close to the rated speeds. I was getting like 4.1 all core and 4.5 single core. Turns out in the bios that if you enable PBO and manually set an additional 200mhz clock in a setting that pops up AFTER that then you can get the rated speeds. Then there is also the AMD Curve Optimizer which tremendously helps with temps. I am now boosting to 4.9-5ghz single core and 4.55 all core while running much colder than before, so I am hitting about 70C exact. You also have to manually set the PPT, TDC, and EDC as mine would be stuck at stock thereby limiting my performance to 4.1ghz. With my board I can go up to 500 for PPT (maxing out currently at 260), 210 TDC, and 290 EDC. To access this part of the bios for me it was in the advanced bios mode, then select settings, then advanced, then AMD Overclocking. From there you can find the Precision Boost option and set it to advanced. This is technically an overclock but my system is somehow running up to 10C colder than stock, at slightly higher voltages, and hitting much higher boost speeds.

For peak single-GPU gaming, this is my favorite combination of size, acoustics, and performance. My system is a 3700X and 2080Ti now. I’m planning to upgrade to a 5900X and 3080/6900XT, and I will still have no problem dealing with the heat quietly. My build is with the 011 dynamic XL, 3 x 360mm radiators (1 60mm thick), dual pump, gpu & cpu block. First time hard line build. Still waiting for the preordered 5900x and to basket a 6800xt. I subbed to this channel for the reviews of fans. I was a little miffed that you can run a 2k noctua faster than a 3k noctua at the same noise level. I have 4 of the 3k RPM fans now but I have set them to track water temperature peaking under load in summer ambients. Right now they are inaudible @ 0.92k RPM. Need to swap out my UPS fan for a noctua though.

Recently got the Watercool MoRa 3 - 420 radiator in stainless steel version with 4 noctua 200mm chromax fans. The radiator is really goog looking actually. I understand if you prefer small cases but in this case an external radiator with some quick connectors just makes so much more sense. The MoRa is great and you could even hide it somewhere if you don't like to see it and just use longer tubing.

I have a 3080, MSI B550i and I went through that same issue you did with a gen 3 riser. Even after you get through the issue with the BIOS, I still have a ton of graphical issues with 3 different gen 3 risers even when the bios is set to gen3. Slotted straight into the board, I have absolutely no issues. Those same risers function perfectly in my kids b450i builds with 3070's inside. I switched my build over to a non riser SFF. I think I am done with risers for the time being. It is just an another possible point of failure and headaches I really don't need.

I had another idea for this... maybe use something like Novec for cooling instead of water? The phase-change cooling aspect might help if your rad+fan setup is good enough. Also, given that Novec is a non-conductive fluid, you could assemble a system without needing a GPU or CPU block per se, and immerse the entire thing in the fluid (somewhat akin to mineral oil PCs). Put a condenser in the area where the radiator is, and you'll have essentially the thing der8auer demoed at Computex a couple years ago. But that's an absurdly complex mod, would probably end up taking too long to be worth the time. I still think it's worth checking out a different fluid for the radiator instead of water that exploits phase-change cooling. It feels like SFF is a good use case for stuff like that, where we need a lot of cooling performance in a small space.

I have also failed my dream 5950X build. I bought the Chinese SGPC K77v1 few months ago, wanted to get a 3950X on it, but decided to wait. I finally got my 5950X last week, and my Noctua D15 arrived. I know it wouldn't fit, because the fan was too tall, but I thought I could use a CNC router or laser cutter to cut an acrylic with a hole, so that I could have the HSF protrude out of the case about 1 inch. I've installed everything on my Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX, and the biggest issue I faced is the HSF's fins are way too big, it takes up more space than my motherboard, and that case would not fit my case at all. Now I'm really upset. I'm not sure what I should do, as I can't return many parts bought. I've even bought 2 Noctua 8025 fans.

I think the amd gpus are supposed to be a little more power efficient. Compared to the Nvidia counterparts (6800xt vs 3080 = 300W vs 320W, 6900xt vs 3090 = 300W vs 350W) Might be worth aircooling one or the other so you don't have to worry about one heating up the other too much.

Well the struggle is real. PCIE 3.0 riser cables are the devil. Tested everything to make sure it worked before putting it all together. It's good, it all works. Then put it all in the case only to find out that the 4.0-3.0-4.0 doesn't work, now it's all apart again just trying to get into the bios. And i figured i might as well wipe all my drives clean for a fesh install since mobo generation is different. "This Won't Take Long" waited 10 minutes before canceling the wipe. On top of all that, i also learned that because i have the auros b550 ax they have that little piece of heatsink that extends to the bottom of the board and my 5700xt's pcb extends in the same spot, so i can't even use my 5700xt with the mobo. So i had a 5500 that i had sitting around that luckily fits. Now my computer is sprawled out across my floor as i try to fix this problem. Edit: After much struggle the problem was solved after switching PCIE to Gen3. It's odd that on Auto, it tries to send a 4.0 signal through a 3.0 cable. It's not like Asus where it's auto set to 4.0. But problem solved until someone comes up with a reliable 4.0 cable.

For those trying to do something similar let it be known that despite what case limitations say the nr200 works perfectly with the 6900xt liquid devil. It fits with about .25mm of room left over so use that knowledge as you will. Also while running this build with a 10900k I was able to fit in a dedicated ddc pump and 2 radiators.
