Trail recipe- instant pudding of your choice, a few tbspn of powered milk or half&half, and then dried fruit, nuts, candy, or crushed cookies. Add cold water to powered ingredients to desired consistency (around 2cups), stir, shake, or knead until mixed. Then add the other stuff. That's for a full box of Jello instant pudding. A box contains 4 servings for non-hikers 😛. I generally just cut it in half in 2 bags with everything powered already premixed, with my add-ons kept in a separate bag. It will save you about 3/4 of the price of branded deserts with just about the same calorie count. With a little creativity and planning, you can make all the ones in this video yourself and save a ton of cash and volume. I still liked the video. Thanks, Dixie.

Hi Dixie! We dehydrate alot of our meals. My wife came up with a breakfast, or dessert, that she calls Breakfast Porridge. She prepares couscous and then adds fruit pie filling. I've only had this hot/warm so I don't knowhow it tastes, or rehydrates cold. Favorite commercial dessert is Jello No Bake Cherry Cheesecake. We had this with our mid-point meal of spaghetti w/ meat sauce, peas and garlic bread on a 10 day canoe trip in BC, Canada. 12 people, 10 days less than 10 lbs per day. Love your videos.

Reminds me of one of the favorite number one desserts I make from scratch. Banana pudding, folded with homemade whipped topping, Nilla wafers layered one layer on the bottom, a second layer in the middle and heavily crumbled on the top. Then topped with more homemade whipped topping when serving. It is a delightful dream! Next time I might make it with oreo cookies instead, just for a twist.

" cheese cake-like paste" just sounds so enticing. I came up in a age when about the only thing for dessert with Instant Pudding (Jell-O brand or generics) with chocolate or banana chips. And alcohol. It was messy and you needed really cold water to make it work Otherwise it was starchy cloyingly sweet soup. Being a cold war child of survivalists, we had English style tinned brown bread that my teen friends and I would pack in spread Nutella on. With a fruity tea, like Constant Comment, it was a real thing. Fast forward to the present, I like different chocolates and good decaf Via (Starbucks) for a after dinner desert. Ryan, if you haven't already done so, this is something you have to research for yourself, based on your own circumstances. Travel expense, for example, is determined by where you live, in relationship to the trail, and how you prefer to get to and from the trail heads. Other variables include your preferences in gear, clothing, shelter, food, electronics, etc. There are a number of checklists available on line. Print one to use as a model and customize it to suit your wants/needs/desires. Then, research the applicable costs. Add additional monies for the unexpected which can range from stays in towns, fast food meals, plus an emergency funds stash in case of accident or illness. The more detailed your list for your own circumstances the more accurate the estimate of your expected expenses will be. Hope this helps you and/or someone else reading these threads.

Larry, same thing with the sodium. Not everyone is sweating like a mule. Plus, if/when the need arises there are alternatives to getting half of a day's sodium allowance in a dessert. If I tried some of those, I'd be at risk for a trip to the emergency room. Know folks much younger than I am who are already on sodium restricted diets. Even though very active, they can't try these DESSERTS either! (sigh)

@@ashleyoverride Not Jell-o as in the gelatine dessert, Jell-o brand instant pudding mix. The gelatine/jelly stuff requires refrigeration to set. The pudding does not. It's a powdered mix that you're meant to add milk to in order to produce a custard-like dessert. Sets up in 5-10 minutes depending on how firm/runny you like your pudding.
