@nrais76

@@prophetzarquon1922 That depends on what you want out of it. I like Palladium's, but I also basically never run it because, like all Palladium games, NPCs are a nightmare or spending hours per NPC on them and they die in the first several se ones of combat. I wasn't aware of any other licensed TMNT games, though I'm sure there are some, but it can be played with a lot of systems. Mekton and TFOS from R. Talsorian, many anime RPGs (I still have editions 1 through 3 of BESM, and SAS Tri-Stat), etc. But those aren't licensed, so technically not a valid answer to your question.

The downside of diversification is that new players have an additional hurdle or having to decide which system to learn. I tried D&D because Community did a D&D episode. Now, when the next Stranger Things comes around and someone wants to try D&D and ask their TTRPG friend, rather than “oh yeah, come try it out at my table”, they’re more likely to get “well, I’m doing a Call of Cthulhu game right now but you probably wouldn’t be into it. Let’s walk through a flowchart of all of the options you might like…and whatever game sounds good to you, there’s no guarantee anyone is playing it., so you may need to learn 3-4 games before you find one that you like AND that you can find a group you like to play with.” IMO, having a huge monolith like D&D is the best possible thing for new players. And even for long-term players, I’m interested in branching out to other systems but no one in either of my parties is since we already have the 5e stuff. I agree with you that having more options is a good thing, but there are other side effects.

Bob, I love this pivot. I’ve had one foot out the door with d&d for years but have still watched your videos-not because you cover d&d but because it’s fun to spend time with you. You are bringing something special and different to ttrpg YT. I love that you’re showcasing a small indie game. It’s become so clear to me, engaging in the recent discourse, how little current dnd players know about the spectrum of games available. They feel intimidated to try a new game because they assume all games have the same learning curve as dnd. I look forward to you broadening your fans’ horizons! I like games of all shapes and sizes but never came across Skate Wizards. I’ll check it out!

I really appreciate that. It's a tough call because I already know (as does every "D&D" KZitemr) that making a video framed for D&D will almost always perform better than framing it as applicable to most RPGs, and even other d20 systems. But I think it's also our responsibility to show just how easy it actually is to get into other games, so I'm going to try to mix it up more often and see how the community responds :)

@@BobWorldBuilder I wonder how possible it will be to use dnd in the title if 1.1 goes through. On the one hand killing content creation for your brand is a good way to kill its outreach, but on the other hand we can't count on them making reasonable decisions. My theoretical best case scenario is that creators will still be able use dnd's name as a byword for ttrpgs, and thus use its brand recognition to keep their channels alive while covering less predatory games.

💫 It's so cathartic for me to see so many people recognize that d&d isn't the only (or even best) game out there. There are so many games out there and getting to know a few of them will broaden your horizons in ways you never could by playing the same thing over & over. I'll be frank here: d&d has a load of structural problems that most of its players spend their whole lives trying to fix and it's agonizing to watch them struggle when these problems are non-issues in other games. You'll be a better gamer if you let yourself think outside the (starter set) box.

For the topic of worldbuilding the TTRPG's that I've been playing are Microscope, Downfall, and The Quiet Year. The three of them are all non-ogl, and focus entirely on the creation of the world and encourage roleplay to different degrees. Microscope is based on a timeline of events that you can jump around in as a group. In The Quiet Year you collectively draw a map and tell a story about a community's story throughout a year of time before "winter". In Downfall you take a utopia of your making, and you roleplay out the game as you watch and create the downfall of this city/country/civilization. All of these RPGs have been incredibly fun to play and I've run several sessions of different RPGs off of the worlds my friend's and I have made with these.

Love it Bob! As well as supporting indie games, I wish more people would have a crack at writing games themselves. I recently met up with a friend I have known for a very long time but haven't seen much of for the last 10 years or so. We were chatting about games and he reminded me of one I wrote when we were about 15. Basically the players were dinosaur farmers on an alien planet, using giant mechs to herd their charges and fend off predators. Players would try to upgrade their mechs, as well as raise and nurture rarer breeds of dinosaur (which brought in the games main resource). It wasn't really a RPG, but we had a lot of fun with it at the time and I had completely forgotten about it, so it was really rewarding to know that he remembered it all these years later. Not sure if it is your thing or not, but I recently picked up a game called Mothership, which is a sort of Alien inspired space horror RPG. I haven't had a chance to play yet,.but it looks pretty fun.

Wow that story really reminds me of the storytelling games I would play with my friends at lunch in middle school. Like you said, not a real RPG as there weren’t really any rules and we were just riffing off of each other’s ideas, but I remember playing a game where we were wizard fox people farming mushrooms with crazy patterns on them that would give you magical powers if you made potions with them…nice memories.

Hey Bob! Love your chanel! The MR. ROGERS of the RPG world. 😉 I would love to get more people into RPGs and since D&D/Fantasy is the game everyone seems to want to play, I wish Castles & Crusades would get some love. It’s a spin off from D&D 3, long before Pathfinder. It’s most attractive feature is it’s simplicity that makes playing with non hardcore gamers or new players soooo much easier. Also... even though it is an OGL system, the Troll Lords who created the game are removing the OGL. I've met the Trolls and shared some drinks with them at GenCon -they are awesome people and you should contact them!!!!

Thanks for your support and for the recommendations! You know, one of the first 3rd party modules I ever picked up was technically for C&C but marketed as 5e-compatible. The funny part is I never ran it because I found it too confusing lol, but I'll have to check out the core rules :)

I'd love to see more content around how actual survival, travel, and combat could be roll played. My favourite videos of yours are your walking videos, and the videos on travel rations. Personally, I'd love to see how you would run different survival skill challenges like hunting, fishing, foraging, and crafting so as to be relevant to any RPG system. I'd love to see a video of how much it would cost to feed a horse and how much the horse feed would weigh. Lots of love, I'll keep coming to your channel regardless of whether you are talking about 5e specifically.

This is amazing. I know I’ve been a stickler for the ttrpg that will not be named cause it took me so long to learn and comprehend. I’ve been scared to find other games cause it felt like that meant it would just be a few more years of “wait, how does this work again?” But if other games are as easy to understand as this one, I’m all for the exploration.

To give a few reccomendations (and help out with the algorithm because I really hope more videos like this can do well), I have a few systems along with what strengths and what vibe they sort of have. Heart: Narrative focus with a lot of elements that make it fairly easy to explain to people used to dnd, and the spooky, eldritch atmosphere of the monsters, classes, and areas make for a really interesting experience. Lancer: While it has a lot more to learn starting out, Lancer isn't all that complicated once you get a feel for the systems, and I feel that the book does a good job leading you through character creation. Also it's a cool sci-fi setting with Mechs! If you run this for people I highly encourage you to allow them to flavor their mechs into being whatever they can think of, as I've seen some really creative ideas come about from people flavoring various weapons and abilities. (I mean a friend of mine made a mech entirely comprised of Legos how cool is that) Anime Campaign: This last one is the most unique and weird to access out of the three. It was a system made by the KZitemr JelloApocalypse and the main idea of the system is to emphasize player freedom and capture the vibe of weird, cheesy Superhero anime. There may be some bits of the system you wanna homebrew for your own groups, but the system of randomly getting a word and having to make up your own abilities and powers based on that word is incredibly fun.

Yeah it was great. Our very first ever session I (playing a hacker/engineer) hacked a bank, planted a custom piece of code that traced some payments, accidentally got indebted to some black market hacker collective (where the payments went) and that was before we ever set foot on our first spaceship. Since then i've engaged in electronic spaceship warfare, battled generically modified death monsters from a previous era, and designed a ship (size 2 hull) so powerful we went 1v2 with a pair of size 3 ships and *won*. The rules are a little unclear sometimes (nothing a decent GM can't deal with) but they leave a huge amount of room for imagination and doing your own thing.

It's fantastic to see this mess be turned into a chance to explore, with a positive twist one can always rely on you to give, Bob. I do think talking about other systems just as much as D&D would not only promote them, potentially finding a rival for it, but it could also simply make the TTRPG hobby grow as a whole. For that I do know some systems to try, like Paranoia, or Fate, but I think that "Babes in the Wood" would be perfect for your kind of content, where you play as children lost in the woods, heavily inspired by Over the Garden Wall

Hi Bob! Fantastic video! Would LOVE to see some content covering Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) or any of the AMAZING 3rd party games by their community of creators. The system is a riot, the dice are crazy cool and so much fun and what’s more, Goodman Games has an such an outstanding 3rd party scene that they actively support and encourage like nobody’s business - TTRPGs like Weird Frontiers, Umerica, Hubris, Ninja City, the list goes on and on. So anything by Goodman Games or anything from their 3rd party creators/DIY RPG community. I wonder how their gaming license works and compares? It must be pretty dang good b/c from what I can see, that community is thriving. That could be a cool video too. The new OGL vs whatever Goodman has for their GL. THANKS BOB!
@BobWorldBuilder

Yeah unfortunately DCC is published under the 3e OGL, so I'm not sure about what's going to happen to the system. Seems like all they would have to change is the names of the saving throws and a few spell names. It's so unique! I've been planning to run a DCC campaign for a while, but I kind of want to see what happens with the licensing before I start introducing more on the channel

My word, the waves this new OGL is making are crashing down onto so. many. things. 😣 well, I’m with you on holding off a bit to see how it all spins out, that makes good sense plus, as so many have shared here in the comments, there are some great alternative TTRPGs out there definitely worth exploring at the gaming table with our friends. I played the first of four expected sessions from Skate Wizards thanks to your video and it was a blast! The session zero took quite a bit of time since no one had used the system before including the dm, but it was a great theatre of the mind experience. Didn’t become a poser yet, but nearly 2/3 of the pcs came very close, something that I didn’t expect with this kind of rules light system. The highlight was me screwing up saying a line halfway through and having to write it out through a fit of giggles to make the table laugh. “Let’s grab ass and haul axe!” Our table very much enjoyed the whole thing through. I do think that the design layout for the Health and Defense could be improved, it can be hard to fit the numbers in and read them during important moments.

Hey Alyssa, so glad I scrolled down the comments and found this. So glad you enjoyed the session and really good feedback about the character sheet layout. We're in the process of making other adjustments to the sheet based on feedback from other players. That will hopefully be on our itch page soon. This game was not meant to be the be-all-end-all for all groups. Just a way for friends to pass a few hours. It warms my heart to learn that it did that for you. Cheers!

Thank you Bob, best response to the OGL situation I’ve seen so far. DnD isn’t the only RPG, and its not the best. It was the most popular thanks to the amount of content from other creators, which made it dominate the market in an unfair way (IMHO). I’m hoping the community will diversify into more and better games, its an RPG community not a DnD community after all, and I think bringing some of the alternatives to the fore can only be a good thing. Hell yeah :) A big part of the fun with the *really* small games is that it's basically a community of creators sharing games amongst themselves. If you want to keep focusing on small, funny games that are easy to run for a few sessions, I can't recommend Troika! enough. It's a psychedelic sci-fantasy meme machine and lots of people over on Itch have tried their hands at making backgrounds for it because it's just fun. On the other hand, I'd *love* if you showcased Shadow of the Demon Lord and it's upcoming sister game Shadow of the Weird Wizard. They're designed by one of the lead designers of D&D 5e, and they really feel like his personal, more focused take on 5e. While Demon Lord is... a little extreme theme-wise, that's why Weird Wizard is releasing, and I think some 5e fans could find a secondary home there.
