I love that you included Mrs. Cratchett. That is such a warm heartfelt scene. Betsey Trotwood will forever be my favorite. ❤ I haven't read Wives and Daughters, but can't wait! I'm holding it until I read all of Gaskell's other novels and I still have Sylvia's Lovers to go.

I never forgot this instance J.K. Rowling mentioned where a fan commented on Mrs. Weasley "Well, she's just a mother!" What a reductive view point. There is never such a thing as JUST a mother. Mrs. Cratchett makes poverty feel less bleak. I really hope you enjoy Wives and Daughters!

Yay! for Aunt Betsy, Mary Garth and Miss Mattie! Two leading ladies I adore from Trollope's Palliser books are Lady Glencora Palliser and Madame Max. Lady Glencora is another character who at first seems flawed and silly, but over the course of the series shows tremendous growth. Madame Max is a woman of quiet strength and wisdom.

I appreciate the love for Mrs. Cratchett! She's overlooked on the regular, I fear. I also really like the character of Cynthia in W&D. I don't think we would be BFFs or anything, but I do really like her character.

Great video! I’m currently listening to Wives & Daughters and didn’t know that Molly and Cynthia were based on Gaskell’s daughter! That’s really fascinating! I also finished Lady Audley and I agree that Alicia is an interesting character; I felt she should have enjoyed a wider circle of friends, poor thing, to avoid her fixating on someone who was never going to reciprocate her feelings! 😊📚

I would like to add Magdalen Vanstone from Wilkie Collins' No Name for consideration. She is the protagonist of the novel and she is supposed to be the heroine but you'd be forgiven for sometimes thinking that she's the villain

@@katehowereads I find her a self-reflective character, in that she knows she's made a mistake almost right away, and she's also very aware afterwards of how her actions may come back to bite her again and thus acts more carefully. I think she shows a lot of courage in fleeing from the Heights - and she's one of the only characters in the novel to actually leave the neighbourhood, which I find interesting. I like too that she refuses to forgive Heathcliff for the way he treated her - and I find it interesting how she alters at the heights :)

I would add for consideration Bathsheda Everdene from Thomas Hardy's "Far From the Madding Crowd". She is a very ambitious character with many foibles. Maybe more in the Femme Fatale category is Eustacia Vye from Hardy's "Return of the Native". She might have one of the most romantic introductions in Victorian literature.

Those are some amazing ladies for sure! The one on this list that stands out for me is Mary Garth because she's a relatively minor character in Middlemarch but simply a paragon of all that is good in a person. I wanted her to end up with someone else...but oh well. That would be my choice of fan fiction, what if she ended up with the other man? 😁

Yay, Betsy Trotwood! Gruff but good-hearted -- and toward the end of the book, a tiny bit of poignant backstory emerges. "Six-and thirty years ago, this day, my dear " she says to David, "I was married. God forgive us all."

Thru listening to your analysis of some of these female characters, I want to read the books. Margaret Hale has had to make lemonade out of sour lemons. Her father made, what he thought was a moral decision that it seems was HIS crisis of faith. But his decision to leave the ministry put his wife and daughter in harm's way. He dragged his poor wife, who was not well to begin with, into a country that was stressful on her poor body and her mental wellbeing. He killed her really. Even though he was kindhearted, and she loved him, he did not choose a wise path. It put them in the "poor house" as we call it. I'll never forgive him for that. But Margaret made the best of it and tried to adjust to that smokey dull place and met Mr. Thorton.
