The pony looks really cute! I think those curls are absolutely adorable and I don't think that tail is a mess. I hate to hear though the project didn't quite go the right way. What I found that helps if you're not in the right frame of mind to do a project but want to do a project that has high stakes or is very important, is to do a mini project instead before focusing on the big task. So if you're writing on a novel but you're worried your dialogue might be bad or you're drawing and you just need a bit more practice with a concept, do a small writing prompt or a less advanced doodle. At the worst if you can tell the doodle doesn't look great or the writing isn't flowing very freely, you know it isn't a good day to do that high importance project. At the best you get some good practice and some good results for the mini efforts. I'm not sure how well this might apply to pony restoration, but I know it helps me when I'm drawing.

I had some thoughts about the things you asked for feedback on. Please bear in mind that I have no restoration experience and these are just suggestions! - Keeping tail colours separate: can you tie each colour individually, the way you usually do the whole tail? Because they're already bunched separately thanks to the thread, maybe you could put one "sideways" cable tie around each colour and one single "middle" tie at the top around all three? - Difference in texture: I think I would try a very thin layer of clear coat or varnish - not enough to make the whole thing look shiny and lacquered, which would look weird, but a matte coating just thick enough to smooth out the differences. Either way, the pony won't feel like the original vinyl when you handle it, so it'd be down to your own preference for a consistent texture or not. I think it would at least look more consistent under the light this way. - Curling different colours: I think my personal taste would be to separate different colours onto different rollers, but since you blend the colours at the borders, that way lies madness, lol. Some single-colour and some two-colour ringlets would look fine! - Being displeased with the curling effect: embrace it! This Masquerade with her tight curls could be dressed in some star sunglasses and legwarmers and become Disco Masquerade. 8)

I hope things are truly better now!! We have to go through the lows to appreciate the highs! 🥰 I had a thought about keeping the tail colours together…. Complete the tail as you did, but after applying the zip tie, put another thread around the individual colours below the tie to bring them back together. Then a stainless steel washer (stainless steel will not rust!) to keep the additional threads in her body! Or another zip tie?! (I hope I explained that clearly ;) xoxo

I like how it turned up. I have like 45 ponys from my childhood, they are in very good condition but some need a hair replacement. For the tail I found a way to not double the colors. You need to fold the strands one next to the other before inserting the tail. Instead a tying all the strands together and then fold them, you fold them first separated, then you pass the cord for the loop and insert the tail.

i'm so sorry she didnt turn out the way you wanted! i think she looks amazing, and i'm actually partial to those kinds of curls :^) i think they're so cute and add character! i'm not the best restorer, and often make the mistake of thinking i can do more for a pony than i realistically can. i've often received a pony with high expectations for the restoration process only to come away from it disappointed. i imagine that feeling is so much worse when it comes to a rare/sentimental pony! :^( what ultimately makes it worth it to me is knowing that there was love, care and time put into restoring a pony that would have possibly otherwise not received any! anyways, i love your channel, and i can't wait to see what else you have in store! thanks for making such amazing, inspiring videos!

I think a touch of red or even a tiny bit of orange in the mix of paint might help the colour match a bit, on camera at least she seems to lean on a more peachy tone rather than true pink. You could also give it a light sand after painting or cover it in a matte sealant a bit to knock back the shine to help the transition area She looks great though, the curls are super super cute and the colour of the hair is so bright and happy. All things considered I would definitely consider her restored

Looking at the colors of the acrylic paint, her original body color is a little more red than the acryl you mixed. Try adding a bit of red, orange or yellow to the mix to get it more towards a yellow-toned pink instead of a blue-toned pink. Sorry I'm bad at explaining but all it needs is a tiny bit of something more yellowish.

As with other commenters, I think the restoration looks really cute, but I can understand your frustration with not finding the effect you wanted. When it comes to the paint colour, I wonder if adding a *tiny* bit of yellow to the pink might help. The pony's colour is ever so slightly "orange" pink whereas the acrylic paint is more like a "blue" pink.

That shade of pink can be a pain to get right, so I really admire your patience ;3 Regarding the tail colors combining, maybe try tying each individual color to a thin wire and then putting them together when attaching them to the backside of the pony? I used to have a pony with a similar tail and I noticed the colors never combined no matter how much I brushed it, like the colors were separated from the inside! I always have to remind myself that the picture in my head may not be what the end result is, recently I had to give up on a project I've been working on for over a year because it was not turning out the way I wanted and in trying to fix it I kept making it worse so I finally had to step away, maybe ill get back to it or it will be unfinished forever. Also I've heard others say this and try to keep it in mind with my art, you see the flaws because you have been looking at it for a long time, someone new isn't going to see those because they didn't know they were there in the first place.

To make the strands not double in the tail you could try a shorter thicker bundle and make a sort of "plug" with hot glue on one of the ends and after add the zip ties for extra security before pulling the tail through... If the pony will be just for display it could work and since in the UK there´s not usually high temperatures the hot glue shouldn´t melt like here in the Mediterranean area in Summer.

I tried leaving a comment with a link to a blog post I made where I successfully got the colors of tail hair the way you want it inspired by you using string to separate the colors here, but I think it got auto purged because there was a link. What I did was make a separate, complete tail out of each color (each one has 2 tiny zip ties), and then stuck the four smaller tails together the way you do with the second zip tie in your example. I do complete the tails and then pull them through the inside of the body instead of pulling the loop into the body from the outside and then applying the zip ties, so it's a little different. It's easier for me to show a picture than to put it in text, but I hope that made sense.

Honestly, I really love how her mane turned out in the end! It's got a real "party" feeling to me. The restoration looks pretty good on a video, too, though I can see how in real life the transitional areas would be more obvious. But it's always good to see someone show their mishaps. It makes the craft feel more accessible, I think (like, 'Oh, maybe I could do something like this after all."). i really like how she turned out! you asked for tail tips and while I haven't practiced this myself, maybe tying the hair sections like you do the full tail, but with string instead of the cable ties will make them appear as one? sort of like making a tassle! then you can thread the cable tie through all three (or however many!) colors and then tighten the other around those three as well. i hope i explained this!! i'll try simplifying my explanation below just in case! three colors of hair. take each color separately and tie them in the middles. then make a tassle by folding each over and tying each with a string to form a tassle. then pull them through together and then thread a single cable tie in place of those strings. then wrap a cable tie around all three together to form a large "tassle" as the full tail. this should allow you to fold them in half but keep them from doubling into two separate sections! i hope either of those made sense, let me know if i need to explain something further. i also hope it helps!

In today's world where everyone projects perfection, seeing people fail just brings back an air of authenticity and reality to life. So thank you! It's almost healing, in a way. Also thank you for the nice noises and soft music and your enchanting voice!

I think for the retouching instead of trying to 'blend it out', you should try to limit the overpainting to just the area that is actively out of sync with the base color. The smaller the area of sheen mismatch, the less obvious the texture difference will be. If the end result paint is a good color match, but the paint is too glossy compared to the vinyl, try gently knocking down the gloss with ultra-fine sandpaper. If the paint is too matte, you can use a sealer to get the right sheen on top of the paint. In any case, I think it's a good idea to address the sheen and color separately, since it's almost too much to expect you to get a good color and texture match in one step, not without a huge amount of trial and error, anyway.

Yes, I think you're very right 😊😊 I never thought of using the fine sandpaper on the paint, I have to try that! Thank you so much for your tips!!

I think she looks lovely! If you did want to try repainting her in the future, I would suggest adding a bit more orange or yellow to your pink paint in order to more closely match the pony's original colour! 💖

Hey! I’m from the uk too! Also I love your channel you make me feel like collecting ponies again. I’m kinda held back though because of the backlash men get for liking this kind of stuff. When I did collect I was very young and not a man lol.

Hello there! I'm so sorry you had to hold back because of how ponies are perceived (as not for boys/men). I hope you can tons of them now 😊😊 I'm in a few MLP collector groups on Facebook and they are a really good place to share the pony love. Several men there too!

The paint didn't work with the milliput because you used acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is basically colored liquid plastic so it won't absorb into something like clay (which is what milliput is). If you had used a water or oil based paint, it should have worked to color the clay.

I really love your restorations and channel! These vids are satisfying. But the one part that confuses me a lot is about a rehired mane. Is it glued inside the head? (Like the tail has a new plastic ties to keep it inside)

You know, when I was younger and was playing with my ponies all the time, when I combed their hair, I was always scared of brushing too hard and pulling some out. But now, having bingewatched your channel for the past several hours, I'm realizing that if I pick up a few skills, I might not have to worry so hard. Plus I always had like a spare twilight (g4) that I always pretended was princess luna, so maybe I could actually turn her into luna someday. In short, your videos are really good and they're a great inspiration!

For what it's worth, I still think the end result looked really cute even if it wasn't Exactly what you were going for! ;w;;; maybe someday in the future as you learn even more you might get some new ideas and could revisit it later to make something you're happier with? but in the meantime, it still looks a lot better than when you started for sure

I think she looks great! A tip about painting vinyl (or any surface): use an acrylic primer, sometimes called gesso, to create a surface to which paint will stick. Use one very thin layer, and allow it to dry completely (about an hour or two) before painting.

When I need to fill in the gaps with additional material, and do not want textures to wary, I like to spray the surface (usually it's a doll torso or leg, but for pony it might just work too) with a couple of layers of glossy warnish spray thing, and then cover that with a very very matt warnish like Mr.superclear

She's honestly so cute! The tight curls give her a lot of personality. I get not being happy with it because it was such a personal project for you though, but I think she came out pretty cute. Hopefully if you decide to try again with her later on when you're in a better spot, she'll come out just how you like it :D

You couldn't get the correct shade of pink because the pony had a slightly warmer tint. You just had to add a small hint of red in the neon pink and mix it together to get the right colour
