Dude this is a sweet tour, thanks for showing it off man :) It's really cool to see all the different tool and such that you have exclusively in Japan, I really love that they take the hobby more seriously and want to provide more for the modeler. Its weird when you see your videos I think you've got a big work space, but your just as cramped as me :) Well actually until I get a drawer unit I'm looking for you've got more room, and nice to have a computer right there next to you as you work :D Great video, someone must be really jealous to dislike this, :P

Greg About the Table i use to have a table that got like that because of the weight as well, one thing you can do, is get a Piece of Wood(same Height) and put it under, on the middle , that solved my problem And great room tour, i like the Display with the models, you should really get another one and put even more models in there

Thanks for such an extensive video, Greg. I was bowled over by the spread of materials, tools and paints you had on hand! Very educational, especially for somebody like me, who really knows nothing about modeling. Great job! I noticed on your one desktop, near those WONDERFUL Metal Slug gachapons, a quartet of AT-ST walkers, Were they gachapons as well, or just really small model kits? Regardless, they looked terrific.
@stevethefishdotnet
9 жыл бұрын
Bill Coffin Sorry for not responding earlier! This comment fell under my radar. Those AT-ST are made by F-Toys. F-Toys are pre-painted mini models that require minimal assembly. They come in blind boxes, so you never know what you get. Two AT-STs come in a box. I was hoping to get the AT-AT, so I bought three of the boxes. They turned out to be all AT-STs. I sent one to my friend in America and kept the other two. Makes me almost want to have them do a stop-motion can-can dance with them lined up like that. I ended up getting the AT-AT for my wife through an auction. Also in the set I have an X-Wing (Red 3), an Imperial Shuttle, a TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, and TIE Bomber. I don't know if they will continue the Star Wars license or not.

tamiya bottles are lacquer paints. you can dilute them in mr. leveling thinner just fine. it is actually easier to control than using tamiya's X20a acrylic thinner.

Measure the space below the table then run to Cainz home/Kahma or other home improvement shop and have them cut a 4x4 (100mmx100) peg for you. That will fix the bowing issue. My work table is an old metal office desk that weighs a ton. No bowing issues but its also freaking heavy. Thanks for the vid! Always interesting to see how other foreign modelers in Japan get by. I'm always amazed by the old american hobby supplies you seem to have floating around. I haven't seen a tube of Testors cement in years. Brings back stringy nightmares from my childhood haha.

zemmix If you look at the old workbench video I'd taken while I still lived in the USA (kzitem.info/news/bejne/14Wq02yYpICjZI4), you can see the same white plastic drawers and such. When I moved to Japan, I put all my modeling supplies into a cardboard box and filled it all the way up. I paid for volume, not weight, so I packed everything in tightly. Testors cement really gets stringy, especially when it isn't fresh. I do like how it really melts the plastic together though. I'd say it may even be stronger than Tamiya's model cement. It's just the crappy spider web strings it makes that drives me crazy.

zemmix I recently went to Jumbo Encho and bought an adjustable support pole. It can handle up to 50kg or more. It's fixed the problem of the table bowing in the middle. Now my supplies no longer lean.

Thanks. I don't do Gundam models on my channel because I've mostly lost interest in them and mainly because there are already so many channels already devoted to them. Many of them are just people merely slapping the kits together and not doing any serious model building, but there are some good channels. I'd recommend StryderPrime and Gunplameister's channels for more interesting Gundam building. Steezy (deezipp3011) has lots of advanced techniques for Gundams; the sort of stuff I can't do like lighting their eyes and such.

Curious, two questions: Looks like space is at a premium for you; what do you do with finished models when they overfill your space? And how did you wind up in Japan? Military? If so, wondering where. In my day job I support a weapon system that's based at Kadena.
@stevethefishdotnet
8 жыл бұрын
I had to look up where Kadena is because I've never heard of it before. I've never been to Okinawa. I am not the military type at all. I've been married to a Japanese girl for 15 years, and 4 1/2 years ago we moved to Japan and I got a job as a teacher. Now I am an office worker. To answer your first question, I have the glass door cabinet as you saw, and I got another similar one that is in the corner you see at the 0:42 second mark in this video. I've had some requests for an update, so I may take another video and some pictures soon.

Hey thanks for making the video, i just watch it a while ago but i have some question and answer that hopefully you might found usefull, first, its true that micro set/sol is better for western models, ive tried it academy model and use the decal with mark softer and its didnt really work so its true, second this is a question where did you buy the drawer, "spice" holder thingie where that you put the thinners on, and where did you buy the drawers? And i've never tried ordering from hlj, and maybe you did but i ordered spraybooth and airbrush system set and their are backordered or out of stock, so is it true that they will send the payment in 4 to 6 weeks? And what model do you recommend me to buy. Sorry for the long line, but again thanks :)

@stevethefishdotnet

OK, let me understand you clearly. Academy is a Korean model company. Are you saying that the Mr. Mark Setter/Softer worked better with their decals than Mirco Set/Sol did? As for the kitchen rack and the drawers, I bought them at home stores here in Japan. The two on the bottom with all the paints and such are from a home store called Jumbo Encho. The spice rack I'd bought at a home store called Watahan. I'm sure you have such stores where you live. The white drawer with the stickers on it is actually from America. The large drawers under my desk is from another home store called Nitori. As for HLJ, I have only ordered from them once, when I lived in America. I feel badly because I'm friends with one of the bosses, but they aren't the best for ordering domestically within Japan. Most of their business is from overseas customers. If they would carry Testors Model Master paints, I know I would definitely buy these from them. I doubt that they would charge you for an item that is backordered or out of stock. They'll probably charge you once they ship it to you. Greg

Oh sorry i get you the wring idea, its actually revell kits its western model right? I did a airbus plane 2 month ago and use mark softer and that didnt work but i ordered a micro sol and it work just fine, the academy model is what i bought yesterday, sorry. And for the question where did you buy the tool organizer where you put the files, pipets, and flat future? And theres gsi creos dry booth its nice that it can dry the paint and such and it also can protect the model from dust or lint, it goes around 11k yen in hlj.

Ah, OK. I get people griping about my videos constantly, so I'm just a bit defensive. There are different types of paints, requiring different types of thinners. @@stevethefishdotnet I don't see why people would gripe unless it's a posturing kind of "no, THIS paint/thinner/etc. is clearly better." I thought you video was fine and dauntingly informative. If there was one thing that I didn't like it was the organization (because of my OCD) but I wouldn't expect any different since you live in Japan and I should be more surprised you found any room at all for a dedicated hobby space. Thanks. I share the love for the hobby the best I can, but people will criticize my camera quality, etc. Rent in Japan is actually fairly reasonable if you don't live in huge cities. This video was taken in my previous apartment, but just as I did then I now have a 3 bedroom apartment, and I have my own nerd cave/hobby room so I can't complain. In Japan you just have to do the best with the space available.

can't agree with you about dullcote That stuff has been around for 40 years and you are literally the first person I've ever heard complain about it turning anything yellow. It could be a reaction with specific types of paint.
@stevethefishdotnet
7 жыл бұрын
Not from my personal experience, but I have heard from several modelers that Testors Dullcote yellows light-colored surfaces. The first I heard this was from a YT video from a guy who has modified Macross Valkyrie toys by doing panel line washes onto the plastic and sealing them with Testors Dullcote. Those toys are expensive, and he has a couple that yellowed. He switched to Mr. Super Clear and he does not have that problem. Plus several other people on the Starship Modeler forum have complained about how Dullcote has yellowed their white and light grey-painted model kits.
