Michael Fix, Mark Cryle, and Sarah Calderwood present 'Timelines - Australian Stories in Song'
Ned Kelly is arguably one of the most famous Australians of all time -yet he still inhabits a somewhat ambiguous, liminal space in the national psyche. Depending on your perspective, he is variously an Irish rebel freedom fighter, working class hero, oppressed disadvantaged unfortunate victim or otherwise a self-promoting, murderous thug, thief and bully - or often somewhere in between all of those things.
This is a Ned Kelly song with a difference we hope. The narrator of our story is Bridget Kennedy. Her story derives from a book called Black Snake written by Bridget’s great grandson Leo Kennedy. Bridget was the wife of Sergeant Michael Kennedy, who, along with two other policemen, all Irishmen, was killed by Kelly and his gang at Stringybark Creek, in the heart of Kelly Country not too far from Mansfield in Victoria in October 1878.
This performance filmed at The New Farm Bowls Club by David Bowers, November 2023
