How have you changed up your investment (or money in general) strategy over the past few years? Let us know (after liking up above)! 🙌🏿🙌🏻

E-series has cheaper fees and you have more control than WS Invest. Not saying one is better than the other. WS Invest is simpler to automate contributions and you don't have to worry about rebalancing. Both have their pros and cons. Also, allocating more to US stocks is not necessarily higher risk/higher reward. You're just concentrating your portfolio into fewer stocks. You may be taking on uncompensated risk. Performance for US & International stocks have flipped back and forth over the last 5 decades.

I changed from a growth investor/day trader to a dividend growth investor well over 15 years ago. I haven't ever changed my strategy since becoming a DGI. I find it easy to implement and stay in for the long haul with much less work. Of course, I evaluate my portfolio MONTHLY and try to touch it as LITTLE as possible. I keep 20-22 holdings and only change them if the fundamentals or outlook has changed and a new stock is ready to take its place. I like your growth as an investor. It's awesome to watch how many more young adults are getting started than 18 years ago when I started investing.

That's definitely an interesting change! That's also great to hear that once you found a strategy that worked for you, you've stuck to it long term. Thanks so much for sharing 😊

I simplified my portfolio and strategy over the last couple of years. I had too many ETF’s and over complicated the percentages of each. I realized the cost of purchasing shares (even with wealthsimple) was worse than a one-fund portfolio. Rebalancing itself for a few extra basis points. I automated payments to pay myself first and just started buying VEQT (insert XEQT/ZEQT here). I’m now going to build the base of my pyramid before any tilting towards a strategy. The stronger my base the stronger my pyramid.

That's definitely relatable - thinking that it needs to be complicated at first with a mix of many different investments! Love the analogy of building the base of the pyramid first 😊

The best advice that I got out of high school was to save money! It opens so many doors for you in the future and allows you to seize opportunities when they arise. You’re essentially buying freedom. I read Personal Finance for Canadians for Dummies when I graduated and started right off with TD E series index funds. Then when brokers started offering free ETF purchases and sales switched to ETFs. I also max out my employers matching RRSP program where the fees are low and are essentially index funds.

7:45 whether the market value of your investments is greater or less than the money you bought it for really shouldn't affect your decision process to reallocate beyond taxation reasons.

I switched from a robo to VEQT two years ago. I don't think its necessary to wait for the robo to go back up before selling and switching because you will be buying the other ETFs when they are down anyways.

Does it really make a difference whether the market is up or down if you're switching from one platform to another? If you're selling at a low point in the market and losing money in your wealth simple account aren't you also buying at a low in your questrade account? Can't you do a direct transfer of TFSA to TFSA or RRSP to rrsp, rather than cashing out and then redepositing?

I started with xeqt and realized that US market provides sector diversification while cheaper in MER, lower withholding tax and lower yield than other international markets. Given I have long time horizon, I switched as follows to account for tax consequences: TFSA: 100% qqqm, RRSP: 100% IVV, Cash: 100% TPU.

I'm also pretty much learning as I go. Made some mistakes in the past so I'm waiting for the value to go up so I can sell those individual shares and put the money in VEQT / XEQT / ZEQT. As of now half my money is going in the robo-advisor and half in the individual ETFs. Just curious, which ETFs has Steph chosen to put her money in?

Thank you guys for your insight! Definitely learned a TON about investing from you and actually opened up my Wealthsimple portfolio with Roboadvisor because of you both! Question, it might be silly, but how do we look at where we are investing with the Roboadvisor like you showed in this video. I’m still confused and trying to get to know how to use the platform. Any advice and guidance would be appreciated 🙏🏼

Great video! I've been investing for a while but am starting to learn more and am wondering if you have any advice on transferring my funds from my bank to a robo advisor? I'm currently invested through RBC with both my RRSP and TFSA and would really like to make the switch and invest into ETF's as the banks default seems to be mutual funds..!

You want to have less international because you want more risk reward? How do you know that international will not outperform US stocks in the future. The history of the US economy is pretty great in the past compared to the rest of the world think of things like world war II. It's not necessarily going to be 100% true in the future
