Damn- your content is on point! I have purposefully gone back to a mixer with no efx- a djm 250mk2- with my sc5000m's- I did a 90s hip hop party for my friend- and it kinda felt refreshing to mix like I did in the 90s ( started 91) - with the sc5000m's you still use your ears - but you're correct- the technology analyses that well these days that you match the bpm and it sits in the cut! But I had to go back to manual scratch fader echoes , using line faders , the brake- and manual reverse etc.... I haven't had this much fun in years! And it was my age group who all grew up on 80s 90s hip hop... Awesome video bro! #scaleitback

I played vinyl from 79 to 2002. When I want the challenge, I just play 70s 80s dance music. Laptop doesn't ease anything. You still need good ears and fast fingers on the pitch control. If you don't come from that era, ain't much of a challenge mixing anything from the 90s and up.

Started with Final Scratch, Serato and now Traktor... Using the technology to strengthen your skills rather than support (crutches) is the key. The prediction lines with the waveforms was the biggest issue i had with live music and no screen...

100% The last time I did that was a NYE party a couple years ago. For some mysterious reason, my software messed up my beat grids on half the tracks I was playing that night. It was horrid - cue new song, set loop manually, get it close, and EQ it in. Transitions were quick because time was short and in my preferred genre - don't stay long in any one song. Prolly my worst ever public showing. Passable, but no fun at all. I walked off the stage relieved and exhausted instead of exhilarated and ready to party. I make no bones about the tech and use everything I can. It makes me a better DJ.

Completely agree! Always good to go back to the roots from time to time. A trip down DJ memory lane is always Killa! I started in 2000 using vinyl and CDs (before CDJs) going back to using just vinyl really makes you appreciate technology and how it adds so much to your creative arsenal, but yes at the same time if the current tech is "the norm" for you, then you've been living in Crutch City.

Yeah, absolute word on this vlog! Not coming down on anyone also, but a nice reminder of the fun and feeling of mixing, the relationship between two or more elements/tracks together and nothing else. My set up 2 D2s and djm850mk2 was complemented of a rane twelve mk2 for that reason. I can have my laptop to the side more. However I realise what you were saying here when I decided to come into a set from playing a song from another source - Such as playing a local file song on a separete player thru the channel input on the mixer, and then I come in on the dj set up and load a track start listening beat matching etc's, switch the track doig it again, its fun and spontaneous, gives a different feel to it then when starting a set straight from the dj sotware. Because, as you point it out, we use all mentioned tools available. just cause, however do diminish the ability if not cultivated.

Since my DJ partner doesn't use cue points, I often play his tracks during my sets. It is a hit or miss but it keeps me on my toes. I mostly play House and Disco but I have been venturing towards Techno, Tech-House, Garage and Progressive House. Once I get the nerve I may try to mix DnB. These are the tools I use to get out of my comfort zone and keep my DJ skills sharp.

EXACTLY!!!! I fully embrace the tech and love it! I came from 1985 vinyl days where I played nightly in clubs. IMO probably the biggest crutch is Master Tempo. When I finally mastered beatmatching I took it to the next level and mastered Pitch Fader Riding. NO WAY in hell could you aggressively pitch bend your vinyl like you can with Master Tempo and jog wheels. It takes lots of skill and finesse to do it without Master Tempo.

I started long enough ago that a crossfader was looked at as a crutch! I recently lost all my playlists and folders, immediately I panicked and began to access my backup. I stopped and let it all go, decided that it was a good thing to rebuild it all from scratch. I became reacquainted with my library and rebuilt new playlists. I've decided to do that every year to keep programming fresh... burn down your playlists! I'm currently putting together a vinyl rig again, it's been 20 years since i've played records, it feels great to DJ analog again, highly recommended. (I do find an iPad for selecting music a big up as I used to hand write my library lists)

youve totally hit the nail square on the head. Ive no idea how many times ive heard the " your not a dj if you use the sync button" my answer was similar but not as eloquent as you put it, but the sync argument isnt even relevant, especially now. it would be super hard to even go down the "blind" route as you so well put the crutches are everywhere, even on the controller screens there's bpm, waveforms and all sorts....

Quick mixing is another debate that I see a lot of but can you imagine quick mixing on regular vinyl without using all of our “crutches”? That would be a serious workout. You may have to actually hire an assistant. Back in the day the goal was to bring in the new song before the current song was over.😂

djs should do an experiment if they have any vinyl or they know someone who does and just get on some decks and give it a go analogue style just to see how they do.Not at a gig or a party but just like a practice session.I have Serato .I have cdjs.I did have Technics but they are with friend along with most of my records but i have some cheap vinyl decks with some anemic torque though they are direct drive at least but i would like to go visit my tunes and jam with my friend that has been looking after my stuff for a while.It would be fun.

I get that djing back in the days was more challenging than it is now. But isnt that the purpose of technology, to make our lives easier? What really is there to prove in going back to that style of mixing? We are on this earth for a limited amount of time. Why waste it working harder instead of smarter?

I'm not saying get rid of technology at all I embrace all this stuff but our skills are getting watered down. My point is if you look down on people who use snyc you are just as guilty staring at your laptop screen
@djdoxblox

@@DJKeo I agree with that point. I never get the sync argument either. Dj skills being watered down is not the term I would use, but rather evolving. I think that the ability to stream and incorporating special effs is where the skill lies now. As well as having a social media and strong marketing skills. As for the dj aspect, creativity in wordplay, toneplay and scratching is where the skill has evolved to.

Philosophical question: A Word Processor contains many crutches including spellcheck and grammar check. Does it make an author less of an author if they depended on these features to write their story? Or are the features just tools that made it possible for the story to be manifested? Keep in mind, at no point did Microsoft Word come up with the story.

I think that is a great point. I hate DJs who look down on other djs that use sync, which is why I said in the video multiple times everything we use today helps make our lives so much better and I never want to go back. The point I was trying to make is that its all relative you can't complain about loops or sync but stare at your computer screen its equally the same thing in my eyes and we shouldn't be arrogant about how great we are while using these tools. back to your point for me personally my spelling is abysmal now because of autocorrect it hasn't hurt my writing but I can't remember how to spell words for the life of me unless i'm typing at a keyboard which I guess is a by product of the technology of today. I'll never go back though to writing on paper if I don't have to.

yeah i would like to see some mordern djs on some vinyl decks a two channel mixers with no on board effects and see how they do trying to rock a crowd.There are a lot og djs that never had to play on vinyl decks ,especially not crappy belt drives like the Citronics i once had.I could not scratch on those .Hell it was an adventure trying to mix on them.Getting Technics was like a fantasy.A lot of clubs didnt even have them.You ever got some dodgy belt drives or some rubbish all in one system.I learned on gear that would horrify todays djs.Also so many venues didnt get the concept of having monitors for djs so you got all the second hand sound while trying to mix and let some guy come in and hide his drugs in your booth.They have no idea
@tiagovirago

I agree with you 100 however, try going 100% analog. You mentioned a mix cd not burning right. Imagine making a mix tape? Tape. Tape. If your mix was bad you started over. If you had bought an amazing tape… you got 1 shot, lesser tapes had the ability to re-record but lost fidelity. Your mix was practiced to perfection. 10k hrs was not perfect for a dj. Every song was a bpm evaluation. You listened to a song for 8bars 3-4 times per track. If you liked it great, if not you thew away money on the lp, you read who produced the album, what label was selling it. Who was the engineer, any tidbit that would give you confidence that you were going to buy a banger. You couldn’t make too many mistakes and record pools were not easy to get locked in on. No internet. So, yeah it’s all skill when you have nothing digital.

I started on CDJ 1000s the very first model and had to self teach myself how to mix and beat match…I remember inserting cds and hitting play and it was the worst sound ever lol I didn’t know about cue points or bpms or anything like that so I did some research (the internet back then was nothing like it is now and there wasn’t anything on KZitem i don’t think it even existed yet lol)…I eventually got better but I wanted to basically do 4 channel mixing like you hear on the radio or in the club but only had 2 cdjs…then the rane / serato box came out and that changed everything ! But I couldn’t afford it lol…I eventually sold those cdjs and stopped djing for a few years…about 2 years ago I was playing around with dj apps on my iPhone and I was like I gotta get back into djing…and now they have controllers that basically mimic my cdjs and djm mixer i used to have…I ended up buying a ddj 800 which was familiar because it was based off cdjs but I knew nothing about grids…coming from cdjs I never had a sync button back then but it’s on my new controller so I tried it out, hit the sync button and it messed my mix up I was so confused…so I just went back to mixing without it since that’s what I used to do anyways…then I learned about the grids and markers and then it started to make sense ! Still don’t use the sync button I primarily use it just to match bpms quickly then I turn it off…it’s always good to learn the basics and not rely solely on the technology…oh and it’s crazy how with serato you can instantly load tracks and do 4 channel mixing on a 2 channel controller…technology has come so far since my OG cdjs
